There is no defensible single annual maintenance bill for every used convertible. Your cost depends on the exact make, model, year, trim and powertrain; mileage; service history; present condition; where you live; local labor and parts prices; and how far you drive each year.
For a useful budget, separate scheduled maintenance, unscheduled wear items and repairs, then have an independent mechanic inspect the specific car and provide a written estimate. A model-specific ownership estimate can show the scale of costs, but it is not a market-wide average.

What “maintenance” means on a used convertible
Owners and cost-to-own sites do not always put the same work in the same bucket. Before comparing figures, identify what each number includes.

Edmunds defines maintenance as scheduled and unscheduled work. It treats repairs separately as work outside manufacturer-warranty assumptions. That distinction matters because a car with complete scheduled records can still need tires, brakes, a battery or other wear items immediately.

A sourced example: what one MINI estimate shows—and what it does not
Edmunds’ 2024 estimate for a MINI Convertible Cooper S with a 2.0-liter turbo engine and six-speed manual transmission lists $6,739 in maintenance and $2,418 in repairs over five years, assuming 15,000 miles per year. The estimate appears on a page labeled “Used 2024 MINI Convertible Cost to Own.”
Those figures are useful as a scale illustration for that configuration and assumption set. They are not a typical bill for every older used convertible, and they are not a published market-wide average. Edmunds estimates fuel, insurance, financing, taxes and fees, and depreciation separately; those ownership categories are not included in the maintenance and repair figures above.
The five-year totals also should not be treated as five equal annual invoices. A tire set, brake job or major repair can make one year much more expensive than another. Use the estimate to understand the range of ownership exposure, then replace it with evidence from the particular vehicle you are considering.

Make, model, year, trim and powertrain
Parts prices, labor time, service intervals and known failure points vary by configuration. A turbocharged engine, a complex automatic transmission or a higher-performance trim may require different parts and procedures than a lower-powered version of the same body style. When an exact configuration is available, use a cost-to-own estimator for that configuration rather than an estimate for a similar-looking car.
Mileage and service history
Mileage tells you how much wear the car has accumulated, while records show whether the previous owner addressed it. Ask for invoices, not just a verbal assurance that the car was “serviced.” Look for evidence of fluid services, belts or chains where applicable, brake and tire replacement, battery replacement and any manufacturer-recommended interval work.

Edmunds’ example assumes 15,000 miles per year. If your use is substantially lower or higher, the timing of wear and scheduled services will change. A low-mileage car can still have age-related deterioration or years of deferred maintenance.
Condition and deferred work
A purchase price does not reveal the first-year repair bill. A car that has been parked for long periods, exposed to harsh weather or driven with warning lights may need several unrelated items at once. Consumer.gov advises used-car buyers to have a mechanic identify needed repairs and their cost. Treat that written assessment as the starting point for your ownership budget.
Location and use
Shop labor rates, parts availability, taxes and local operating conditions differ by location. Frequent short trips, heavy traffic, winter road salt, dusty roads and regular open-top exposure can change wear patterns. Any estimate should state its mileage and geographic assumptions; otherwise, it is easy to compare unlike numbers.
How to build a budget for the exact car
Use this process before you negotiate a purchase or decide whether an apparently cheap convertible is affordable.
- Identify the exact specification. Record the model year, body style, engine, transmission, trim, mileage and any factory options that affect service. Do not substitute a coupe, a different engine or a newer model’s estimate without labeling it as an approximation.
- Collect the maintenance schedule. Use the owner’s manual or manufacturer service information to list time- and mileage-based services. Mark each item as documented, due soon, overdue or unsupported by records.
- List visible wear items separately. Check tire tread and age, brake thickness, battery date, windshield condition, wiper performance, lights and alignment symptoms. These are maintenance or wear costs, not the same thing as an engine or transmission repair.
- Book an independent pre-purchase inspection. Choose a shop that is not representing the seller. Give the technician permission to inspect the mechanical systems, underside, electrical equipment, body seals and convertible mechanism.
- Request a written estimate. The report should identify safety-critical work, work needed soon and items that can be monitored. Ask for parts, labor, taxes and an expected time frame, not a single unexplained total.
- Obtain a second quote for large work. A second estimate can reveal whether a recommendation is urgent, optional or priced unusually for your area. It also helps distinguish a repair from a maintenance service that another shop has categorized differently.
- Set a first-year reserve from the evidence. Add the cost of overdue scheduled work and items the inspection rates as needed soon. Keep a separate reserve for failures that cannot be predicted from a visual inspection; do not assume a clean inspection eliminates all risk.
What to inspect before buying a used convertible
Operate the roof through a complete cycle
Open and close the top several times with the car parked on level ground. Listen for grinding, hesitation, uneven movement or pump noise. Confirm that latches engage, the warning indicator clears and the top stores correctly. A mechanism that works only when warm, only with assistance or only after repeated attempts is not operating normally.

Inspect the fabric or hardtop
Look for tears, abrasions, stretched seams, discoloration, cracked windows, delamination and repairs that are beginning to separate. Examine the top from inside and outside; daylight or dampness at a seam can be easier to see from the cabin. Consumer Reports recommends checking a convertible’s roof for tears and obtaining a written report with repair costs.
Check seals, drains and the interior
Inspect rubber seals around the windows, windshield header, doors and trunk. Look for water staining, mildew odor, damp carpeting and corrosion near electrical components. Clear, intact drains help route water away from the cabin, but a shop should verify that they are not blocked or disconnected.
Look underneath and scan for related damage
Ask the mechanic to inspect the underside for corrosion, impact damage, fluid leaks and evidence of prior repairs. Scan the car for stored diagnostic codes and verify that warning lights illuminate at startup and then go out as expected. A seller who will not allow an independent inspection is a significant budgeting risk.
Are convertibles more expensive to maintain than coupes?
There is not enough evidence to claim that every convertible costs more to maintain than an equivalent coupe. The answer depends on the pair you are comparing, their age, condition, powertrains, roof design and local repair rates.
A convertible adds components a coupe does not have: the top material, seals, latches, drains, motors, pumps or hydraulic parts, and the control electronics that operate them. Those parts create additional inspection points and potential repairs. They do not guarantee a higher bill in every year, because a particular coupe may have more expensive engine, suspension or electronic work.

For a fair comparison, use the same ownership horizon and annual mileage for both cars. Compare documented scheduled services, current tires and brakes, inspection findings, top condition and operation, and written local quotes. Comparing one car’s five-year estimate with another car’s first-year repair list will produce a misleading result.

There is no reliable universal dollar reserve for an older convertible. The appropriate amount is the cost of known overdue work plus the shop’s estimate for items needed soon, with additional cash available for an unexpected failure. The older and less documented the car, the less useful a generic annual figure becomes.
Prioritize the reserve in this order:
- Safety and control: brakes, tires, steering, suspension, lighting and structural or restraint-system faults.
- Water management: roof leaks, blocked drains, damaged seals and damp electrical areas that can create escalating damage.
- Reliability: cooling-system, charging, starting, fuel and transmission problems that can strand you.
- Comfort and appearance: cosmetic roof wear, trim and nonessential accessories after safety and reliability work are covered.
When a seller offers a discount instead of completing repairs, compare the discount with the written estimate and the possibility of related work being discovered once the job starts. A lower purchase price does not make an unaffordable repair affordable.
Does a convertible top need special cleaning or waterproofing?
Care depends on the top’s material and the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions. Do not assume that a cleaner or protectant suitable for one fabric, vinyl roof or hardtop is safe for another. Read the owner’s manual, verify material compatibility and test any approved product in an inconspicuous area.
MINI’s 2007 owner’s manual states: “If the convertible top is very dirty, it is recommended that it be cleaned with a special convertible top cleaning agent.” The same manual gives model-specific cleaning steps. That guidance applies to the MINI covered by that manual, not to every convertible.

MINI USA’s current FAQ says, “It is not necessary to waterproof the convertible top.” That statement is specifically about MINI’s fabric soft top. It does not establish a rule for other manufacturers or materials. If your own manual permits a suitable agent for a beading effect, follow its preparation, application and drying instructions; otherwise, routine cleaning with the approved method is the safer choice.
Basic top-care checks
- Remove loose dirt before it is ground into the fabric or seals.
- Keep drains and folding areas free of leaves and grit, using the method specified by the manufacturer.
- Do not force a top that is frozen, obstructed or misaligned.
- After washing, inspect the cabin and trunk for dampness so a small leak is addressed before mold or electrical corrosion develops.
- Record any tear, window separation or hydraulic symptom and include it in the next repair estimate.
Ways to control maintenance costs after purchase
Use a written service log
Record the date, mileage, work performed, parts used and invoice amount. A log prevents duplicate services, makes future diagnosis easier and helps establish value when you sell the car.
Fix small water-management problems early
A loose seal or blocked drain can be less expensive to correct before the interior, wiring or control modules are repeatedly exposed to water. Include leak checks in routine inspections, especially after heavy rain or a car wash.

Match the service to the vehicle’s use
Tell the shop how many miles you drive, whether the car sits outdoors, and whether you use it in winter or for frequent short trips. The technician can then interpret time-based maintenance and wear observations in context instead of applying a generic schedule.
Use specialists when the roof system requires them
For complex hydraulic, electrical or structural-top repairs, seek a shop that routinely works on that roof design. Ask what diagnostic steps are included before approving parts replacement. A specialist’s higher hourly rate can be worthwhile if it prevents repeated trial-and-error repairs.
A practical decision test before signing the paperwork
Buy only after you can answer these questions with documents or inspection evidence:
- What scheduled services are due at the current mileage and age?
- Which wear items will likely need replacement first?
- Does the top open, close, latch and seal correctly under repeated operation?
- Is there any evidence of water intrusion, blocked drains or corrosion?
- What does the independent mechanic’s written estimate say is needed now, soon and later?
- Can you pay for the identified work without relying on an unverified “average” maintenance number?
If the answers are incomplete, treat the missing information as financial risk rather than assuming the car will be inexpensive. A documented, well-inspected convertible can be predictable to own; an undocumented one can turn routine ownership into a sequence of unrelated repair bills.
