MotorTrend reported in 2023 that K24s have repeatedly reached at least 200,000 miles with regular maintenance; the sources available do not document a specific K24 car at one million miles with independently verifiable mileage and service records. The key qualification is that K24 names a family of engines, so specifications and ownership checks depend on the exact engine code and vehicle.
What does “K24” mean?
K24 is a family designation for Honda 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines, not a single engine with one specification. Honda says the larger 2.4-liter versions debuted as the K24A1 in the 2002 CR-V and the K24A4 in the 2003 Accord and Element. Variants continued through much of the 2000s and 2010s, including direct-injection engines branded Earth Dreams, as well as the high-performance K24Z7 in the ninth-generation Civic Si. The engine code and model year matter when comparing output, fuel delivery, emissions equipment, maintenance needs, or parts. Honda’s overview of its 2.4-liter engine applications provides context for the range.
How long will a Honda K24 last?
There is no reliable, variant-by-variant lifespan figure established here. MotorTrend’s September 14, 2023 article says K24 engines have repeatedly reached at least 200,000 miles with regular maintenance. That is a secondary editorial report, not a controlled reliability study, and it does not quantify how common that mileage is. Nor does it establish a million-mile example.
So the fair conclusion is that the K24 has evidence of substantial longevity, but the “million-mile” wording should be treated as a question, not a proven achievement. A particular car’s condition and documented maintenance are more useful than the K24 label alone.

Are all K24 engines the same?
No. Honda’s engineering paper comparing two K24A versions illustrates how much specifications can differ within the family. Its developed K24A for the 2008 Accord is a 2,354 cc inline-four with DOHC i-VTEC and a 10.5:1 compression ratio. Honda lists output of 142 kW (193 PS) at 7,000 rpm and torque of 220 Nm at 4,400 rpm. The prior engine in the same comparison is listed with 9.7:1 compression, 125 kW (170 PS) at 5,800 rpm, and 220 Nm at 4,000 rpm. Those figures describe the compared K24A models, not every K24. Honda R&D Technical Review, April 2008.
For four-cylinder i-VTEC, Honda describes a combination of VTEC variable cam lift and duration with Variable Timing Control. Honda distinguishes that system from the V6 i-VTEC/VCM implementation, so “i-VTEC” by itself does not identify a K24’s exact configuration. Honda’s i-VTEC overview.

What concerns have K24 owners reported?
MotorTrend’s 2023 coverage mentions front crankshaft-seal oil leaks, top-end clicking, and vibration as recurring owner-reported concerns. These reports are not evidence that every K24 has a defect or that each symptom has a single cause.
- Oil near the front crankshaft seal: The reported concern is leakage in this area; an inspection should establish where the oil is coming from rather than assuming the seal is the cause.
- Top-end clicking: The article notes that excess friction at a cam lobe may be one explanation. A noise alone does not confirm that diagnosis.
- Vibration: Possible causes mentioned include a fouled spark plug or a broken engine mount. These possibilities require diagnosis rather than treating vibration as a K24-specific failure.

Which cars came with a K24 engine?
Honda identifies the K24A1 in the 2002 CR-V and K24A4 in the 2003 Accord and Element as early applications. Later 2.4-liter variants appeared across passenger cars and compact SUVs, including direct-injection Earth Dreams applications; the K24Z7 was used in the ninth-generation Civic Si. Because applications and specifications vary by year and market, verify the code for the individual car rather than relying on a model name or displacement alone. Honda’s engine overview lists applications and variant context: Honda 2.4-liter engine information.
What should you check before buying a K24-equipped car?
- Identify the exact application. Confirm the vehicle’s model year and engine code, then match any specifications, parts, or service information to that combination. A “2.4L Honda” manual or component may not cover every K24.
- Review service history. Look for records tied to the actual vehicle and engine. The sources cited here do not establish one universal maintenance schedule or interval for every K24 variant.
- Investigate symptoms directly. If there is oil leakage, clicking, or vibration, have the source diagnosed rather than treating a reported concern as proof of a particular failed part.
- Check recalls by VIN. Honda warns that year-and-model results can include vehicles that are not affected, so use the VIN lookup. Honda states safety recall repairs at authorized dealers are free. Honda recall lookup and guidance.
What is the 2015–2016 CR-V replacement-engine recall?
A June 2017 notice hosted by NHTSA describes a safety recall covering certain 2015–2016 CR-Vs whose original factory-installed engines had been replaced. The replacement engines could have been assembled with incorrect pistons, potentially causing adverse performance and, in some scenarios, an engine stall. The notice called for inspection and possible repair at no charge. This is a limited recall involving specified replacement engines, not evidence of a defect common to all K24s. Check the individual vehicle’s VIN for eligibility. June 2017 recall notice hosted by NHTSA.
