Most Tesla batteries do not suddenly die when the eight-year warranty ends. In normal use, the high-voltage battery gradually loses usable capacity, which means less range between charges. Tesla says its Model 3 and Model Y fleet data shows less than 15% capacity loss after 200,000 miles, although that is Tesla’s own fleet data rather than an independent durability study.
A reasonable real-world expectation is that many Tesla batteries remain usable for 12–15 years or longer. Some last less, particularly after severe damage, repeated exposure to extreme heat, charging-system faults or an individual cell or pack defect. The warranty period is a protection limit—not a prediction that the battery will stop working.
The short answer: how long does a Tesla battery last?
A Tesla’s high-voltage battery commonly remains serviceable for the life of the vehicle, with range declining gradually over time. Tesla’s current U.S. battery-and-drive-unit warranties last eight years, with mileage limits between 100,000 and 150,000 miles depending on the model and trim. They include a minimum battery-capacity retention requirement of 70%.
The U.S. Department of Energy gives a general estimate of 12–15 years in moderate climates and 8–12 years in extreme climates for EV batteries. That is not a Tesla-specific guarantee, but it is a useful benchmark. A Tesla used in a mild climate, charged sensibly and kept away from prolonged high or low states of charge may continue operating well beyond those figures.

“Battery lifespan” can mean three different things:
- Warranty life: the period during which Tesla provides specified coverage.
- Useful life: the period during which the car still provides acceptable range and performance.
- Failure life: the point at which a fault prevents normal charging or driving.
Those dates are not the same. A battery with 80% of its original capacity is not dead; it simply provides approximately 20% less energy than it did when new.
Tesla battery warranty by model
Tesla’s current U.S. warranty terms vary by vehicle and trim. The applicable warranty supplied with the individual car takes priority over a general website summary.
| Vehicle or trim | Battery warranty | Minimum retention |
|---|---|---|
| Model S | 8 years or 150,000 miles | 70% |
| Model X | 8 years or 150,000 miles | 70% |
| Cybertruck | 8 years or 150,000 miles | 70% |
| Model 3 RWD | 8 years or 100,000 miles | 70% |
| Model Y RWD or AWD | 8 years or 100,000 miles | 70% |
| Model 3 Premium, including Performance trims | 8 years or 120,000 miles | 70% |
| Model Y Premium, Performance and L Premium Launch Series | 8 years or 120,000 miles | 70% |
The time and mileage limits are whichever comes first. The 70% figure is a warranty threshold, not a point at which the vehicle becomes unusable. If a covered battery falls below the applicable retention standard, Tesla’s warranty remedy may involve repairing or replacing a battery component or pack, including a remanufactured part, according to the warranty terms and diagnosis.
What Tesla’s mileage data actually shows
Tesla has reported that Model 3 and Model Y batteries lose less than 15% of their original capacity after 200,000 miles. That is encouraging, but it needs to be interpreted carefully:
- It is Tesla-reported fleet data.
- It does not represent every Tesla model, battery chemistry or climate.
- It is an average-style fleet observation, not a promise for an individual car.
- Some batteries will degrade more slowly, while others will experience a fault much earlier.
A separate January 2026 Geotab analysis covering more than 22,700 EVs across 21 makes and models found average degradation of 2.3% per year, projecting about 81.6% capacity after eight years across the analyzed EV fleet. That result should not be presented as a Tesla-specific average, but it supports the broader conclusion that EV batteries generally lose capacity progressively rather than reaching a universal eight-year expiration date.
What battery degradation feels like from the driver’s seat
The usual symptom is reduced maximum range. If a new Tesla could travel 300 miles under a particular test, an older battery with 85% retained capacity might offer roughly 255 miles under comparable conditions. Real-world range will also change with speed, temperature, tire pressure, elevation, payload, heating and air conditioning.

Degradation is not always linear. A battery may lose some capacity relatively early, then settle into a slower rate of decline. The result depends on the battery chemistry, pack size, age, mileage, climate and charging history. The displayed range estimate can also change because of the car’s calculations and driving conditions, so it is not a definitive battery-health test by itself.

1. Heat
High temperatures accelerate battery aging. Geotab’s fleet analysis found vehicles operating in hot climates degraded about 0.4 percentage points faster per year than vehicles in mild climates. Tesla’s manuals also advise avoiding exposure to ambient temperatures above 140°F (60°C) or below −22°F (−30°C) for more than 24 hours.
The car’s thermal-management system helps protect the pack, so parking outside on a hot day does not automatically damage it. The greater concern is repeated or prolonged exposure to severe heat, especially when combined with high charge levels.
2. Frequent high-power DC fast charging
Supercharging does not automatically ruin a Tesla battery. However, frequent use of high-power DC charging is associated with faster average degradation. In Geotab’s data, vehicles relying heavily on DC fast charging above 100 kW degraded by up to 3.0% per year, compared with approximately 1.5% per year for vehicles primarily using AC or lower-power charging.
That does not mean an occasional road trip is harmful. It means that drivers who use high-power DC charging for nearly every charge may place more aging stress on the pack than drivers who normally charge at home on AC power.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTesla also says the battery’s peak charging rate may decline slightly after a large number of DC-fast-charging sessions. Charging can be slower when the battery is cold, nearly full or aged; that behavior is not automatically evidence of a failing battery.
3. Leaving the battery at 0% or 100%
Tesla advises avoiding leaving the battery at or near 0% or 100% for long periods. For long-term storage, Tesla recommends approximately 50% charge and leaving the vehicle plugged in where possible.

There is no advantage to waiting until the battery is nearly empty before charging. Regular charging is acceptable and generally preferable to repeatedly allowing the vehicle to sit at a very low state of charge.
4. Extreme use and individual defects
Battery chemistry, pack design, mileage and driving habits all matter. A vehicle that spends its life towing, driving at sustained high speeds or operating in extreme temperatures may age differently from a lightly used commuter car. A manufacturing defect, damaged pack, cooling-system problem or electrical fault can also cause an early failure that ordinary degradation statistics cannot predict.
Should you always charge a Tesla to 80%?
Not necessarily. “Always charge every Tesla to 80%” is too broad because Tesla’s recommended daily limit varies by vehicle and battery configuration. The car or Tesla app displays the appropriate daily and trip limits for that specific vehicle.
To view the setting on the touchscreen, open:
Controls > Charging
The slider is labeled Set Limit. If you move it beyond the recommended daily limit, the car may offer a one-time option to charge higher. Tesla says that temporary setting resets to the previous limit afterward.
Use the trip limit when you need the additional range for a journey, rather than leaving the battery at a high state of charge for days without a reason. The exact limit shown by the car matters more than a generic rule copied from another Tesla owner.
How to check Tesla battery health
On supported vehicles, the touchscreen path is:
Controls > Service > Battery Health
For the more comprehensive evaluation, select:
Controls > Service > Battery Health Test
The feature is not available on every vehicle. Tesla says the test requires all of the following:
Recommended Free Tools
- An AC charger capable of at least 5 kW.
- Battery level below 20%.
- The vehicle in Park.
- No pending software update.
- No active battery or thermal-system alerts.
- A Wi-Fi or cellular connection.
The test can take up to 24 hours. It may discharge the battery below 10%, possibly as low as 0%, and can temporarily disable features such as climate control and Sentry Mode. Do not unplug the car or repeatedly interact with the vehicle or app while it is running.

The result is a percentage representing energy retention compared with the battery when new. Tesla recommends using the test when you have a genuine concern rather than treating it as a daily measurement. A lower range estimate alone does not prove that the pack has lost the same percentage of capacity.

Normal degradation is gradual. A sudden warning, major charging restriction or abrupt range change deserves diagnosis. Tesla high-voltage alerts can include:
| Alert | Possible effect |
|---|---|
| BMS_a067 | Battery performance limited; range and charging may decline. |
| BMS_a068 | Battery service required; acceleration and charging are reduced. |
| BMS_a074 | Maximum charge level and range are limited. |
| BMS_a027 or BMS_a035 | Reduced electrical isolation; the car may fail to restart or charge. |
| BMS_a059 | Pack voltage does not match individual-cell measurements. |
| BMS_a069 | Battery charge is too low to continue driving. |
These alerts can involve cell-voltage mismatches, electrical-isolation problems, thermal-system faults or other conditions. They should not be dismissed as normal aging. Schedule service through the Tesla app and follow the vehicle’s instructions.

A Tesla has a separate low-voltage battery. If that smaller battery is discharged, the car can appear completely unresponsive even when the large traction battery still contains energy.
Leaving the high-voltage battery at 0% and unplugged can also damage components or result in a low-voltage battery that needs a jump-start or replacement. Follow Tesla’s approved low-voltage jump-start procedure or arrange service. Do not open, remove or disassemble high-voltage components yourself; battery work must be performed by trained technicians.
Common myths about Tesla battery lifespan
“The battery lasts only eight years.”
Eight years is the warranty duration, not the battery’s expiration date. Many packs remain useful after the warranty ends.
“The battery is dead at 70%.”
No. Seventy percent is the minimum retention figure in the applicable warranty. A battery below its original capacity can still power the car, although warranty remedies may apply if the relevant terms are met.

“Supercharging destroys the battery.”
That is overstated. Heavy reliance on high-power DC charging is associated with higher average degradation, but ordinary Supercharging does not mean sudden battery failure.
“The displayed miles are a battery-health test.”
They are not. The estimate responds to the car’s calculations and operating conditions. Use the built-in Battery Health evaluation when available, particularly before making a warranty or used-car decision.
“The whole pack must always be replaced.”
Not necessarily. Depending on the diagnosed problem and warranty terms, Tesla may repair or replace a battery component or install a remanufactured battery or pack. The correct remedy cannot be determined from range loss alone.
What this means for a used Tesla buyer
Age and mileage are useful starting points, but they do not tell you the battery’s exact condition. Before buying, check the vehicle’s warranty eligibility, charging history if available, service records and current range under comparable conditions. Look for battery or thermal-system alerts and ask whether the Battery Health feature is supported.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not reject a Tesla simply because its estimated range is lower than the original window sticker. Conversely, do not assume a low-mileage car has a perfect battery: long periods at a high state of charge, extreme heat, accident damage or an unresolved fault can matter more than the odometer.
FAQ
How many miles can a Tesla battery last?
Many Tesla batteries can remain usable for well over 200,000 miles. Tesla reports less than 15% capacity loss in Model 3 and Model Y packs after 200,000 miles, but that is company-reported fleet data and not a guarantee for every car.
What happens when a Tesla battery warranty expires?
The battery does not automatically stop working. After the warranty expires, you are responsible for covered repairs that are no longer under warranty, while normal capacity loss may continue gradually.
Is 80% battery health bad for a Tesla?
No. An 80% battery-health result means the pack retains about 80% of its original energy capacity. The car should have less range than when new, but the battery is not necessarily defective or unusable.
How can I improve Tesla battery lifespan?
Follow the daily charging limit shown for your vehicle, avoid leaving the car near 0% or 100% for long periods, use AC charging when practical, limit repeated high-power DC charging, and avoid prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures.
The Bottom Line
Many Tesla batteries can last 12–15 years or longer, and some can remain useful beyond 200,000 miles. Expect gradual range loss rather than a predictable sudden failure. Tesla’s eight-year, 100,000–150,000-mile warranty with 70% minimum capacity retention is a safety net, not an expiration date. Climate, battery chemistry, charging habits, mileage, damage and individual faults determine how long a particular pack lasts.
