Honda’s Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) automatically shuts down cylinders on certain V6 engines when the engine needs less power, then brings all six back when more torque is needed. Honda describes VCM as an automatic system, not a feature with a normal factory off switch. Aftermarket controllers are sold for some Honda 3.5L V6 applications, but fitment is vehicle-specific and the devices are not Honda-endorsed repairs.
What Honda VCM does
VCM is cylinder deactivation: the engine temporarily stops operating some cylinders instead of using all six all the time. Honda says the system can deactivate one bank when maximum power is unnecessary, cutting fuel to the relevant injectors and stopping valve operation through VTEC. When the driver needs full torque, all six cylinders operate again. Honda’s overview of VCM describes the system as responding to the torque needed to maintain cruising speed.
The purpose is to improve fuel efficiency when the engine does not need full output. Honda’s reviewed descriptions do not establish a single fuel-saving percentage or mpg gain that applies across VCM-equipped vehicles.
How VCM deactivates and reactivates cylinders
Fuel and valve control
VCM does more than stop fuel delivery. Honda’s technical explanation describes hydraulic control and split rocker arms: the camshaft can continue moving while the rocker-arm arrangement prevents the valves in deactivated cylinders from operating. That stops combustion in those cylinders and reduces the pumping work associated with running them. This mechanism is explained in Honda’s June 2003 VCM technical explainer; it is useful for understanding the design, not for identifying which current models use a particular VCM version.
#1 Best Overall
- Powerful Performance:When you are driving, you can feel the shudder of the car, hear strange noises, or see that the ECO is always on. Simply replace this VCM cable to eliminate noise and restore smooth and safe driving.
- New Design:The newly upgraded VCM kit allows for easy conversion by simply selecting the appropriate ohm switch, making the operation simpler and more convenient.
- Suggestion:There are 4 different types of resistors, which vary in operating temperature due to differences between vehicle cooling system components. Therefore, it is necessary to choose a suitable resistor based on the operating temperature. It is recommended to start with an 82 ohm resistor and monitor it for one week. (How to distinguish resistors, please refer to the reference image)
- Compatible With:Fits for Honda 3.5L V6 Engine with VCM. Compatible with 2013+ Honda Acura, 2009+ Honda Pilot, 2008+ Honda Accord, 2007+ Honda Ridgeline, 2007+ Honda Odyssey(This kit will also works on the 2005-2006 Honda Odyssey, but requires modification of the male connector). Compatible with Honda Accord Honda Civic Honda Odysse with VCM 2005-2007 temperature sensor repair harness.
- Premium Quality:Long life-span matters, that is why our VCM wiring harness kit is composed of high quality materials, which is resist high-temperature, greatly increase the service life.
Operating modes differ by engine
VCM behavior is not identical across every Honda V6. Honda’s description for select Earth Dreams V6 engines says that high power demand calls for all six cylinders, while moderate-speed cruising and low engine load can use one three-cylinder bank. Honda also notes that other VCM versions can deactivate two or three cylinders. The exact modes depend on the engine and vehicle version.
For the select Earth Dreams engines covered by Honda’s technology description, the transition is managed with changes to ignition timing and drive-by-wire throttle position, along with cycling of torque-converter lockup. Those measures are intended to smooth the change between operating modes; they should not be assumed to describe every VCM-equipped engine.

- Wide Compatibility for Honda & Acura Designed for Honda Odyssey 2007+, Pilot 2009+, Accord 2008+, Ridgeline 2007+, and Acura 2013+ with 3.5L V6 VCM engines. (2005–2006 Odyssey requires male connector modification.)
- Updated Resistance Control – No Resistor Swap Needed This vcm tuner 2 style muzzler comes with pre-installed dial control, letting you select 68–120Ω without opening the case or replacing resistors.
- Smooth Engine, Less Oil Consumption Turn off VCM system to prevent cylinder misfire, lower oil consumption, and eliminate engine shake during cruising.
- DIY-Friendly Installation Simple plug-and-play design, no tools required. Great for vcm muzzler honda odyssey users who want an easy mod they can remove at any time.
- Complete 30cm Harness Kit Comes ready to use with 30cm harness, protective housing, and secure connectors. Built to last with heat-resistant components.
Can you turn Honda VCM off?
No factory VCM off control appears in the Honda descriptions reviewed. The system is presented as automatically selecting an operating mode according to power demand.
An aftermarket seller, VCMTUNER, markets a physical controller intended to disable VCM/ECO on certain Honda 3.5L V6 vehicles. Its product listing includes application and connector notes, so a broad label such as “Honda 3.5L V6” is not enough to establish fit. Confirm the exact model year, engine, connector and current product documentation before considering one. The seller’s claims about fuel use, reliability or emissions are not independently established here; the device is not a Honda accessory, and its warranty or legal implications depend on the vehicle, warranty terms and jurisdiction.

| Choice | What it means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Leave factory VCM operating | The system automatically deactivates cylinders under conditions defined for that engine. | Consult the vehicle’s owner information for the specific operating behavior. |
| Consider an aftermarket controller | A third-party device is marketed to suppress VCM/ECO on selected applications. | Verify exact engine, model year and connector fit; assess product claims, local emissions rules and warranty terms. It is not a diagnosis or repair. |
When a VCM-related concern needs diagnosis
A VCM-equipped badge or a controller listing does not identify the cause of oil use, vibration, a warning light or a misfire. Diagnose the actual symptoms and trouble codes rather than assuming cylinder deactivation is responsible. A disabling controller does not establish or fix the cause of an engine problem.
There is a narrowly scoped Honda warranty notice relevant to some misfire complaints. An American Honda notice dated June 17, 2025, hosted by NHTSA, announced a warranty extension for specified 2013–2015 Pilot and 2013–2017 Odyssey vehicles with certain engine misfire conditions that trigger DTCs P0301–P0304. The notice discusses piston-ring effectiveness, oil on spark plugs and carbon fouling, and directs service personnel to applicable bulletins for diagnosis and repair. It does not establish that VCM alone causes every misfire or oil-consumption complaint. Check the vehicle’s VIN and current Honda guidance; the notice described a special coverage period through January 31, 2026, a date that has passed. Read the NHTSA-hosted American Honda notice.
