Tesla recall 25V-002 covers 239,382 potentially affected vehicles, but that figure is not the number of cars confirmed to have failed. Certain 2024–2025 Model 3 and Model S vehicles and 2023–2025 Model X and Model Y vehicles may lose the rearview-camera image. Whether a particular car is included depends on its VIN. Tesla’s remedy is a free software update, with a free computer replacement only if inspection indicates the computer experienced the failure or potentially damaging stress.
What is the Tesla rearview-camera recall?
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) lists the campaign as recall 25V-002; Tesla’s recall number is SB-25-00-001. NHTSA’s January 8, 2025 acknowledgment lists 239,382 vehicles as potentially affected. That is the size of the possible recall population, not a count of vehicles known to have lost their camera image. NHTSA recall 25V-002
On affected vehicles, reverse current during power-up may short a circuit board in the car computer. The rearview-camera image can then be blank when the driver shifts into Reverse. Which Tesla models are potentially affected?

These are broad model-year ranges, not a determination that every vehicle in them has the defect or qualifies for the remedy. Tesla’s report and service bulletin describe particular computer and software configurations, including a subset of HW4-equipped vehicles, and identify regional scope that includes North America, Asia Pacific excluding China, Europe, and the Middle East. How to check whether your Tesla is included
- Find your VIN. Use the 17-character vehicle identification number associated with your Tesla.
- Search NHTSA’s recall lookup. Enter the VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup. NHTSA says a VIN search can show whether a specific vehicle needs recall repair; a model-year match alone cannot confirm it.
- Confirm with Tesla if needed. Contact Tesla through its official service channels and ask whether recall 25V-002 applies to your VIN and whether any remedy remains outstanding.
What is the fix, and does Tesla have to replace the computer?
Free software update
Tesla’s primary remedy is a no-cost over-the-air update that changes the car computer’s power-up sequence to address the condition that can cause the short. Tesla’s owner notice tells owners to check for software version 2024.44.25.3, 2024.45.25.6, or a later release. Tesla owner recall notification
Computer replacement only when indicated
The recall does not mean every included Tesla automatically gets a new computer. Tesla says it will replace the car computer free if the vehicle experienced the shorting failure, or stress that may lead to failure, before the remedy software. Its service bulletin directs inspection when symptoms are present and replacement if required. If your camera display is blank in Reverse, contact Tesla for service rather than attempting a repair yourself.

When was the recall announced?
Tesla’s manufacturer report was dated January 6, 2025, and NHTSA acknowledged the campaign on January 8, 2025. Tesla’s owner notice is dated March 7, 2025, the date the notice was expected to be mailed. Recall status and remedy availability for an individual car should still be confirmed by VIN.

- Do not rely on a rearview-camera image that is not displaying; use care when reversing and check the area behind the vehicle directly when safe.
- Check the VIN for recall status and contact Tesla to arrange any applicable recall remedy.
- Do not treat an aftermarket camera or other self-installed component as a substitute for Tesla’s recall repair.
