A range-extender electric car uses an electric motor to drive the wheels; in a series range-extender layout, its petrol engine turns a generator to supply electricity rather than mechanically powering the wheels. The engine runs when that particular car’s control system or selected mode calls for generator power. There is no single battery-charge threshold or start rule that applies to every model.
That distinction matters: “range extender” describes a general idea, not a promise that every vehicle has the same hardware, charging capability or engine-start behavior. The Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV provides a documented plug-in example, while the older BMW i3 REx illustrates the concept in a different model and era.

What is a range-extender electric car?
A range-extender electric car is built around electric traction: an electric motor supplies the force that turns the wheels. In a series arrangement, the petrol engine’s job is to turn a generator. Electricity from the generator supports the electric drive system and can replenish the battery, which stores power for the motor.
The energy path is therefore different from the familiar image of a petrol engine connected to the wheels. The battery can power the traction motor; when the vehicle’s controls call for more electrical energy, the engine burns fuel to operate the generator. The generator’s output is used by the electric drive system and/or stored in the battery. Regenerative braking can return some of the vehicle’s kinetic energy to the battery, as BMW describes for the i3.

Mazda’s general explanation of a series hybrid contrasts it with other hybrid arrangements in which an engine and motor may operate independently or together depending on driving conditions. In the series layout described by Mazda, the electric motor drives the wheels and the gasoline engine is used to charge the battery. So a petrol engine in a car does not, by itself, make that car a range-extender EV: the important question is how power reaches the wheels.
When does the petrol engine run?
There is no universal state-of-charge percentage at which every range-extender engine starts. The activation rules are set by each vehicle’s control system, and they can differ by model, market and operating conditions. A percentage or accelerator trigger documented for one car should not be transferred to another.
Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV
Mazda describes the European MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV as a series plug-in hybrid: the vehicle’s driving range is motor-powered, and its rotary engine serves as a generator. Mazda names three operating modes—Normal, EV and Charge. Its January 13, 2023 announcement also says generation can activate while EV mode is selected if the driver needs sudden acceleration and presses the accelerator substantially beyond a certain point, producing energy for the required output.
This is a documented example of demand-triggered generation, not a general start rule. The announcement does not establish a universal battery threshold, nor does it mean that every range extender will start at the same pedal position or under the same conditions. For the exact behavior of a particular vehicle, consult its owner’s manual for the model year and market; a manufacturer’s description of another version is not a substitute.
BMW i3 REx
The BMW i3 REx is a useful historical example of an optional gasoline generator. BMW’s 2013 U.S. launch announcement specified a 650 cc, 34 hp, two-cylinder gasoline unit. BMW also described the optional engine as being used exclusively to generate electric power. Those figures belong to the announced model and are not a current-market specification or a statement about every range-extender vehicle.

- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
The available BMW descriptions establish the generator’s role, but not one operating rule that can safely be applied across i3 model years and markets. Owners should check the manual for their specific vehicle to learn when its engine can start and which conditions or settings affect it.
Does a range-extender car need charging?
Some range-extender cars are plug-in vehicles. The MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV is one: Mazda says it supports normal and fast charging, so its battery can be charged from an external power source as well as receive electricity from its onboard generator. “Range extender” alone does not tell you whether a specific car has a plug or which charging options it supports; check the vehicle’s specification for the relevant market.

- Connector: confirm that the equipment’s connector is compatible with the car.
- Charging rate: check that the equipment’s rate is supported by the vehicle and suitable for the intended installation.
- Market specification: use details for the car’s country or region and model version, rather than assuming that a specification published elsewhere applies.
Mazda’s statement that the R-EV supports normal and fast charging does not establish one universal charger, connector or charging rate for all range-extender cars. Treat charging equipment as vehicle- and region-specific.
What the Mazda MX-30 R-EV figures mean
Mazda Motor Corporation’s 2023 materials describe a European MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV with a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery and a 50 L fuel tank. These are manufacturer figures for the European model described, not universal specifications for the range-extender category.

Mazda gives an electric-only range of 85 km for the European R-EV under the WLTP test cycle when EV mode is selected. The company cautions that actual electric-only range varies with driving conditions. The figure should therefore be read with all of its qualifications intact: it is a European WLTP value for EV mode, not a guaranteed distance in everyday use or a value to apply to another market or model.
The electric-only figure answers a narrower question than total driving range. It describes the stated test-cycle distance in EV mode; it does not tell you how often the generator will run in your own use, how much fuel you will consume, or what range another range-extender car will achieve. The available manufacturer figures are specifications, not independent estimates of real-world performance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare range-extender cars
Compare specific vehicles rather than relying on the label alone. The useful questions are about the power path, external charging, published electric range and generator controls. Keep the model year and sales market attached to every answer, because a specification or control description for one version does not automatically apply to another.
Trace the power path
Ask whether the electric motor drives the wheels and whether the engine’s stated role is to generate electricity or whether it can also mechanically propel the car. That distinction separates the series arrangement described here from other hybrid systems, which may use engine power at the wheels as well as electric drive. A vehicle name or “hybrid” label alone does not resolve the question.
Check whether it plugs in
Confirm that the exact version can be charged externally, then check which charging modes and equipment it supports. A plug-in capability can let an owner replenish the battery from an external source; the generator remains a separate onboard source of electricity. Do not assume that another model’s charging compatibility applies to the car you are considering.

Read the range figure with its test conditions
For any published electric-only range, identify the market, test cycle and operating mode, then read the manufacturer’s real-world qualification. Mazda’s 85 km figure, for example, is tied to the European WLTP cycle and EV mode, and Mazda says actual range varies with driving conditions. Comparing figures without those details can make unlike claims look equivalent.
Find the documented generator controls
Look for the named modes and the conditions under which the engine may start. The MX-30 R-EV materials identify Normal, EV and Charge modes and describe a substantial accelerator press in EV mode as one circumstance in which generation can activate. That description is specific to Mazda’s example; it is not a template for another make’s controls. For the car you own, the owner’s manual is the appropriate place to verify the model-year- and market-specific behavior.
What a range extender changes—and what it does not
The generator gives a series-layout vehicle an onboard way to produce electricity from petrol when the control system calls for it. It does not change the basic fact that the electric motor is responsible for driving the wheels in that layout. Nor does the label tell a buyer whether the battery can be plugged in, what range a particular version has, or exactly when its engine will run.
Mazda framed the purpose of the technology in its 2018 Technology Briefing speech script, saying: “We see a range extender that uses an engine to generate electricity as a people-friendly technology that removes much of the anxiety of driving an EV.” The statement is Mazda’s corporate view; the script does not identify a named speaker for that sentence. The practical implication for a driver is more specific: understand the car’s actual charging options and generator controls rather than assuming the technology behaves identically across models.
Quick Recap
Practical checks for owners and prospective buyers
- Before interpreting an engine start: identify the model, year, market and selected mode. A running petrol engine may be generating electricity rather than mechanically driving the wheels, but confirm the power path for that vehicle.
- Before relying on EV mode: read the model-specific manual and manufacturer description for any documented condition that can activate the generator. Mazda’s accelerator example applies to the MX-30 R-EV, not to range-extender cars generally.
- Before planning charging: establish whether the exact version is a plug-in and verify compatible equipment, connector and charging rate for its regional specification.
- Before comparing range claims: retain the test cycle, market, mode and real-world caveat alongside the published number.
- Before applying older specifications: treat BMW’s 2013 U.S. i3 REx figures as historical launch specifications for the announced model, not as current vehicle-market information.
