The Honda HR-V has no single worldwide model-year timeline: launch dates, sales gaps, equipment and powertrains vary by market. Honda’s Japan archive traces the original model from 1998, while Honda Indonesia describes a later-generation transition after a production gap. Recent U.S. and UK HR-Vs also differ substantially: the 2026 U.S. model uses a gasoline engine, while Honda UK’s September 2024 guide describes a full hybrid. Here is the clearest way to follow the HR-V’s major changes without treating one country’s history as universal.
How many Honda HR-V generations are there?
There is no fully reliable worldwide count based on one shared sequence of model years. Honda’s sources document market-specific histories, and a generation label or year in one country should not automatically be applied to another. For example, Honda Japan’s archive dates the original HR-V announcement to 1998, while Honda Indonesia’s retrospective describes the next generation as introduced at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show and mass-produced in 2014.
The timeline below therefore separates Japan’s archived original-model dates from Honda Indonesia’s broader transition account, then identifies later specifications by country and publication date. It is a guide to documented milestones, not a complete year-by-year change log for every market.
Honda HR-V generations and major changes
Original HR-V: Japan archive, 1998–2006
Honda Japan dates the HR-V’s new-model announcement to September 21, 1998. Its archive divides the original model into three catalog periods: September 1998–June 2001, July 2001–September 2003, and October 2003–2006. Those are archive periods, not a global model-year table. Honda Indonesia’s history says the first HR-V launched in Europe in 1999 and remained on sale through 2006, followed by a production halt from 2006 to 2012. It places the next generation’s introduction at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show and says mass production began in 2014 for Japan, North America, Australia, Brazil and several Asian markets. Second-generation HR-V: Indonesia’s 2018 refresh
Honda Indonesia describes local 1.5-litre and 1.8-litre engine and trim options for this generation. At the 2018 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), it presented an Indonesia-market refresh with a revised grille, full-LED headlights and daytime running lights, LED fog lamps, a new 17-inch alloy-wheel design and a shark-fin antenna. Those details are specific to the Indonesian update; they should not be read as a worldwide 2018 facelift specification. Honda Indonesia also reported 175,800 retail sales in Indonesia and 21 awards in its anniversary article’s timeframe; those are Honda-reported figures, not independently audited totals. 2026 U.S. HR-V: gasoline engine, CVT and optional AWD

American Honda lists U.S. EPA fuel-economy ratings of 26/32/28 mpg for 2WD and 25/30/27 mpg for AWD, in city/highway/combined order. The figures are EPA ratings for the 2026 U.S. model, not a direct comparison with figures from another country’s test cycle. American Honda’s 2026 specifications provide the ratings.
UK HR-V e:HEV: a different powertrain and grade range
Honda UK’s guide, marked correct to the best of Honda’s knowledge at publication in September 2024, describes a full hybrid e:HEV HR-V. It lists a 1.5-litre petrol engine with 107 PS engine power and three drive modes: Electric, Hybrid and Engine. The guide names Elegance, Advance, Advance Style and Advance Style Plus grades. This is the UK offering described in that dated guide, not the specification or trim range of the 2026 U.S. gasoline model. Honda UK’s HR-V product guide also lists 122 g/km CO2 for the listed grades and cautions that fuel and emissions values use a standardized test cycle and may not reflect real-world driving.

How to identify which HR-V generation or version you have
A registration year alone may not identify a car’s generation consistently across countries, especially around a launch or transition. Check the vehicle’s market and model-year documentation before ordering parts or comparing specifications.
- Confirm the original sales market. Japan, Indonesia, the U.S. and the UK have distinct documented timelines and equipment descriptions.
- Use the VIN, registration documents and local Honda records. Confirm model year, trim and drivetrain; do not infer these from a generic worldwide generation label.
- Match parts and accessories to the exact car. Verify market, model year, trim, drivetrain and part number with Honda or a qualified parts supplier before purchase.
Are HR-V specifications and fuel-economy figures comparable worldwide?
No. The U.S. figures above are EPA ratings for the 2026 U.S. model, while Honda UK’s guide uses a standardized test cycle for its hybrid and emissions information. Different test cycles, powertrains and regional equipment make a direct numerical comparison misleading. Use the figures for the market and model year in question, and treat the UK guide’s fuel and emissions values as test-cycle results rather than a promise of real-world consumption.
