Across that span, BMW’s recurring aim has been to balance sporting character with comfort for longer journeys, while the emphasis of each redesign shifted—from the original shape and engine development to safety and electronics, lighter chassis construction, and, with the G60, a broader mix of electrified powertrains.
The timeline below uses BMW’s generation codes and production periods. Those codes identify a generation, not a complete model-year, engine, trim or equipment specification: details and availability differ by market. BMW’s historical summaries do not establish every annual change in every region, so this is a generation-by-generation account rather than a year-by-year equipment ledger.

What changed through the generations?
E12: the original 5 Series, 1972–1981
BMW describes the E12 as the successor to the New Class BMW 2000 and the first car in the 5 Series line. Its three-box profile, twin circular headlights, “Sharknose” front and vertical kidney grille established a recognizable starting point. BMW also points to fuel-injection engines and calculations intended to improve occupant safety as part of the original car’s development.
BMW Group reported that almost 700,000 E12s had been sold by the end of production. That is the manufacturer’s historical figure, not an independent measure of reliability or safety.

E28: a more modern treatment, 1981–1987
The E28 refined rather than discarded the original concept. BMW describes changes to the grille and headlight detailing and a cockpit oriented toward the driver. In its UK overview, BMW lists ABS, airbags, electronic engine control, catalytic converters and an on-board computer among features available as options. Availability varied; these should not be read as standard equipment on every car or as features offered in every market. BMW says a driver’s airbag became optional from 1986.
E34: sedan first, Touring later, 1987–1995
BMW dates the E34’s premiere to 1987 and says the Touring joined in 1991. That distinction matters when comparing generations: an estate’s introduction date and body-specific code do not necessarily match the sedan’s. The generation overview does not support a detailed year-by-year account of E34 engine or equipment changes across markets.

E39: more aluminum in the chassis, 1995–2003
BMW UK says the E39 grew while its weight remained almost unchanged, and credits the generation’s greater use of lightweight aluminum in the chassis with helping agility, stability and precision. The same account highlights extensive hot-dip galvanizing. BMW UK dates the facelift to 2000 and notes the ring-shaped details in the headlights.
BMW UK reports more than 1.48 million E39 vehicles delivered, including 266,000 Touring models. The total is not sedan-only, and the page does not state a publication date for that figure.

E60: the fifth generation, 2003–2010
BMW’s history pairs the E60 sedan with the E61 Touring. Its overview establishes the generation and its related body style but does not give a granular annual revision history. For a specific E60, the chassis code alone is not enough to establish its engine, equipment or model-year specification.
F10: the sixth generation, 2010–2016
BMW groups the F10 sedan with F11, F18 and F07 variants in its generation material. Those related codes cover different bodies or market variants; they are not alternate labels for one sedan specification. Equipment and powertrain details need to be checked against the relevant market and model year.

G30: the seventh generation, 2017–2023
The G30 was the generation before the G60. BMW’s official timeline identifies that succession, but the available overview does not provide a full G30 change log by model year. A particular year’s engines or equipment should therefore be verified against market-specific documentation rather than inferred from the generation code.
G60: the eighth generation, launched in 2023
BMW called the G60 the eighth generation of the 5 Series when it introduced the car in 2023. The defining shift in the current generation is the wider powertrain choice: BMW UK describes fully electric i5 models, plug-in hybrids, and four- or six-cylinder petrol and diesel models. The lineup depends on market; a UK overview is not a universal equipment or availability list.

BMW Group PressClub indexes sedan technical specifications valid from March 2025. BMW USA publishes separate US-market technical data and flags some electric range estimates as preliminary. These sources describe different markets and should not be combined into a single global specification. The G60’s 2023 launch date identifies the generation’s arrival, not a claim that its specifications have remained unchanged in every market since then.

- Use the code to identify the generation. E12, E28, E34, E39, E60, F10, G30 and G60 are useful labels for the sedan’s generational sequence, but a code does not by itself specify an engine, trim or equipment package.
- Check the body style separately. Touring models have their own related codes in several generations, including E61 for the E60-era Touring and F11 among the variants associated with the F10 generation. Body-style introductions can occur after the sedan’s.
- Match specifications to market and model year. Engines, equipment and powertrain availability vary across regions and years. BMW UK’s current choices, BMW USA’s data and global PressClub specifications are not interchangeable.
- Treat generation dates as broad production periods. The dates in the table identify the generation periods supplied by BMW’s historical material; they are not a substitute for checking a particular vehicle’s market-specific model-year records.
What do the production figures say about the 5 Series?
BMW Group stated in its May 2023 media information, “By spring 2023, more than ten million BMW 5 Series have already been produced.” This is a figure for the overall 5 Series, not for sedans alone. The E12 sales figure and E39 delivery total above likewise have distinct populations, so they should not be compared as if they counted the same body styles or used the same measure.
