Honda identifies driving conditions, vehicle load, idling time, driving habits and vehicle condition as the main influences, so a highway result, a city commute and an owner’s tank-to-tank calculation can all differ substantially.
The most useful approach is to calculate your own km/L over repeated fill-to-fill intervals, then check tire pressure, unnecessary cargo, idling, maintenance and driving conditions before deciding that consumption indicates a problem.

Published Honda BR-V figures—and what they actually measure
Honda has published several BR-V fuel-economy figures, but they come from different markets, years, variants and test conditions. Treat them as context rather than a promise of what your vehicle will achieve in daily traffic.

The Philippines numbers came from 128 km of highway driving at 60–80 km/h and 1,500–2,000 rpm, with the air conditioner set to 24°C and the fan at speed 1. That is a specific organized run, not a typical city result, a universal real-world average or a controlled comparison covering every BR-V generation and country.

The India figures describe an older 2016 market and different powertrains. Combining them with the 2022 Philippines results would imply a common test method that was not established. Model year, engine, transmission, trim, route and test procedure all matter.
Why your BR-V can use more or less fuel
Honda’s owner-manual guidance states that fuel economy and CO₂ emissions depend on “driving conditions, load weight, idling time, driving habits, and vehicle condition.” It also warns that, depending on those and other factors, you may not achieve the vehicle’s rated fuel economy. Each factor can change the result independently, and several often occur together.
Driving conditions
Highway cruising at a steady speed generally creates a different result from stop-and-go urban traffic, steep roads, short trips or heavy congestion. A 128 km run with a narrow speed range cannot predict a commute involving repeated starts, traffic lights and long queues. When comparing two tank readings, note the route, average traffic, terrain, weather and whether the trips were mostly highway or city driving.
Load weight
Passengers, luggage, roof-mounted equipment and other cargo increase the mass the engine must move. Honda specifically lists load weight and advises avoiding excess luggage. Remove items that do not need to remain in the vehicle before judging whether consumption has changed.

Idling time
Fuel is consumed while the engine runs even when the vehicle is stationary. Honda Cars Philippines advises, “Minimize idling,” and the owner manual identifies idling time as a fuel-economy factor. Long warm-ups, waiting in pickup lanes and extended stops with the engine on can therefore lower a tank’s km/L without adding distance.
Driving habits
Acceleration, braking, cruising speed and how smoothly traffic is anticipated affect the amount of energy required. Two drivers on the same road can record different results because their speed changes and stop patterns differ. Keep your driving style reasonably consistent when collecting comparison data.
Vehicle condition
Maintenance state, tire inflation and the correct engine-oil viscosity are part of Honda’s guidance. A vehicle that is not maintained according to its schedule may not deliver the same economy as one in proper condition. Fuel economy alone cannot identify a particular mechanical fault, so persistent unexplained changes should be assessed with the vehicle’s service information and a qualified technician.

How to calculate your own BR-V fuel economy
Honda’s manual recommends a direct calculation: divide the kilometres driven by the litres of fuel added. A fill-to-fill log is more useful than relying on a dashboard estimate because every entry records actual distance and fuel purchased.

- Fill the tank and record the starting point. At a normal refuelling, note the odometer or reset the trip meter. Use the same practical fill method each time; stopping at different points can make the litres figure less comparable.
- Record the driving context. For that interval, note whether the kilometres were mostly city, highway or mixed, along with unusual congestion, hills, passenger count, cargo and air-conditioning use.
- Refuel at the next repeat interval. Write down the kilometres driven and the litres added. The litres figure is the denominator for the calculation.
- Apply the formula.
km/L = kilometres driven ÷ litres of fuel added. For example, if a trip meter shows 420 km and the refill is 35 litres, the result is 12 km/L. - Repeat before drawing a conclusion. Compare several similar fill-to-fill intervals rather than treating one unusual trip as your normal result. Keep unlike routes and loads labelled instead of averaging them together without context.
This log also helps separate a genuine trend from a one-off trip. A low result after a week of traffic, heavy cargo and extensive idling is not directly comparable with a light-load highway run using steady speeds.
Checks that can improve consistency
Set tire pressure to the specified value
Use the pressure specified for your particular BR-V, normally shown on the vehicle’s tire-information label and in the owner information. Do not guess, and do not inflate beyond the specification in pursuit of a fuel-saving claim. Honda recommends maintaining specified pressure, while Honda Cars Philippines notes that a tire-pressure gauge can be useful and recommends regular checks.
A digital gauge is a practical tool for making those checks repeatable. It is not a guarantee of a particular percentage improvement; its value is that it helps you identify pressure that is below the vehicle’s requirement and verify adjustments accurately.

Remove unnecessary luggage
Clear tools, sports equipment, containers and other items that are not needed for the next trip. Because Honda identifies load weight as a factor, comparing an empty vehicle with one carrying several passengers and a full cargo area will not show the same consumption.

Limit avoidable idling
Turn off unnecessary engine running during extended stationary waits when it is safe and appropriate to do so. Record unusually long idle periods in your log so that you do not mistake them for a change caused by route distance or mechanical condition.
Follow the maintenance schedule
Use the maintenance intervals specified for your model and market. Honda also recommends the engine-oil viscosity listed for the vehicle. Keep service records, because knowing when maintenance was completed makes a later fuel-economy change easier to investigate.
Keep the comparison clean
When checking whether an action made a difference, change one practical variable at a time where possible. Compare similar routes, similar traffic, similar cargo and similar air-conditioning use. Otherwise, a favorable or unfavorable result may simply reflect the conditions of that particular tank.

How to tell a normal variation from a possible issue
A single low km/L reading does not prove a fault. First review the log for heavy traffic, a different route, extra passengers or cargo, long idling, unusual weather and air-conditioning use. Then verify tire pressure and confirm that the vehicle is on its scheduled maintenance plan with the recommended oil viscosity.

If consumption remains consistently different across comparable trips, document the dates, distances, litres, route type, load and symptoms such as warning lights, rough running or changes in performance. Share that record with a qualified service professional. It gives them more useful information than an isolated statement that the BR-V “feels less efficient,” while avoiding an unsupported diagnosis from fuel economy alone.
How to compare BR-V fuel figures fairly
Before comparing a published number with an owner report or another BR-V, check every axis below. A higher km/L figure is not automatically a more efficient vehicle if the underlying conditions were easier.

What can—and cannot—be claimed about “real-world” BR-V economy
There is no established representative everyday average covering all BR-V years, markets, transmissions, routes, loads and drivers. Owner discussions can reveal useful experiences, but an anecdotal question such as “BRV owners, how is your fuel consumption?” is not a measured representative dataset.
