It began with four engine choices, later added a convertible and the turbocharged SVO, and ended with the SVT Cobra and limited-production Cobra R. Ford’s milestone timeline is the source for the historical details and figures below.
What is a Fox Body Mustang?
“Fox Body” refers to the third-generation Ford Mustang built from 1979 through 1993 on Ford’s Fox platform. Ford identifies 1979 as the generation’s debut and says the new Mustang was 200 pounds lighter than the Mustang II. Those dates describe model years, not a claim that every car was built during the same calendar years.
How did the Fox Body change over time?
1979: Four engine choices at launch
The first Fox Body Mustang offered a broader engine range than the later 5.0-liter association might suggest. Ford lists a 2.3-liter four-cylinder, a 2.8-liter V6, a 3.3-liter inline-six, and a 5.0-liter V8. Ford’s timeline also identifies a 140-horsepower turbo version of the 2.3-liter and a 140-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 among the 1979 choices. These are figures and descriptions for the debut model year, not specifications for the full generation.
1980: A smaller V8 replaced the 302
For 1980, Ford says the 302-cubic-inch V8 was dropped and replaced by an economy-minded 255-cubic-inch V8 rated at 119 horsepower. The change illustrates why a model year matters when comparing Fox Body engine choices: the lineup did not stay fixed across the generation.

1983: The convertible returned
After a ten-year absence, Mustang again offered a convertible for 1983, with a power top. This added a body-style choice alongside the coupe and hatchback forms in the range; the timeline does not provide a complete year-by-year body-style catalog.
1984: The SVO created a turbo performance branch
Ford’s Special Vehicle Operations developed the Mustang SVO for 1984. It paired a turbocharged and intercooled 2.3-liter four-cylinder with larger tires and brakes and a dual-wing rear spoiler. The SVO was a distinct specialty model, not simply another name for a 5.0-liter Mustang.

1985: The 5.0 HO reached a new milestone
Ford says the revised 5.0-liter HO V8 produced 210 horsepower when paired with a manual transmission in 1985. That output is specific to the stated engine and transmission combination; it should not be generalized to every 5.0-liter Fox Body.
1993: The generation ended with Cobra models
Ford identifies 1993 as the final Fox Body model year. The new Special Vehicle Team introduced the limited-production Mustang Cobra, with distinctive styling cues and performance upgrades. Ford’s timeline reports that 107 Cobra R cars were built and that the racing-oriented model sold out before production.

What should you compare between Fox Body Mustangs?
Because the generation spans 15 model years and includes several engine and specialty-model changes, “Fox Body” alone does not identify a car’s exact specification. Compare examples using these details:
- Model year: engine availability and outputs changed during the generation.
- Engine and transmission: distinguish, for example, the 5.0 HO manual-transmission figure Ford gives for 1985 from other combinations.
- Body style: note whether the car is a coupe, hatchback, or convertible; Ford’s timeline specifically marks the convertible’s return in 1983.
- Model or variant: separate standard models from specialty versions such as the SVO, Cobra, and Cobra R.
Ford’s milestone timeline is a concise history, not a complete technical specification catalog. For a particular car, confirm year-specific equipment and configuration from documentation that matches its model year and variant.
