Can a four-cylinder sports car feel supercar-special? The Lotus Emira Turbo makes the strongest case: it is mid-engined, dramatic in design and, in Lotus’s words, a “junior supercar.” But “supercar” is a subjective label, not a cylinder-count threshold—and the available evidence does not establish a definitive seven-car roster. These examples show how far the idea stretches, from an exotic-leaning Lotus to more attainable driver’s cars.
What makes a four-cylinder sports car feel “super”?
Four cylinders alone neither qualify nor disqualify a car. The more useful question is whether the complete package delivers the traits people associate with supercars: striking proportions, a focused layout, serious acceleration, handling intent and a sense of occasion. By that standard, some four-cylinder sports cars invite the comparison more convincingly than others.
That distinction matters because the cars below are not a ranked list, nor do the cited specifications come from one common test. They span different model years and markets, and their acceleration figures use different measurement conventions.
Which four-cylinder sports cars make the case?
Lotus Emira Turbo: the clearest supercar argument
The Emira is the most persuasive example here because it combines a mid-engine layout with an explicitly exotic brief. Lotus offers the Emira with different powertrains, so this article means the four-cylinder Turbo—not the V6. Lotus says the Turbo uses an AMG-sourced four-cylinder engine and gives it a manufacturer-claimed 0–62 mph time of 4.4 seconds in its June 2025 announcement about the 2026 range. Lotus’s Emira media page quotes then-Lotus Group VP and Managing Director Matt Windle calling it a “junior supercar”; that is the manufacturer’s promotional characterization, not an objective classification.

The mid-engine layout and Lotus’s framing make the Emira Turbo a strong fit for the playful label. Its claimed acceleration is useful context, but it should not be treated as a direct comparison with figures from other manufacturers or publication tables.
Porsche 718 Cayman: check the exact engine
“718 Cayman” does not identify a single engine. Porsche Great Britain’s model page lists four-cylinder boxer engines for some Cayman versions, while GTS 4.0 variants use a 4.0-litre six-cylinder. The four-cylinder versions belong in this discussion; the six-cylinder GTS 4.0 does not. Porsche Great Britain’s 718 overview is UK-market information, so buyers elsewhere should check their local range.

The Cayman’s appeal in this comparison is its focused sports-car format, not a claim that every 718 has four cylinders or that every version qualifies as a supercar. Naming the trim is essential whenever the model is discussed.
Alpine A110: a dated four-cylinder comparison
A 2022 evo comparison table lists the Alpine A110 with a 1,798 cc engine producing 249 bhp. Those are magazine figures from that year, not a current manufacturer specification or proof that the car is presently available new in any particular market. Treat the A110 as a historical example unless local, current availability is confirmed.

Alfa Romeo 4C: compact, dramatic and historical here
The same 2022 evo table lists the Alfa Romeo 4C at 1,742 cc and 237 bhp. Its name and four-cylinder specification make it a natural fit for the conversation, but the cited table is historical evidence only; it does not establish current new-car sales or availability. The figures also cannot be used as a like-for-like performance ranking against the Lotus or Toyota claims.
Toyota GR86: proof that the category is broader than supercars
Toyota specifies its US-market 2026 GR86 with a naturally aspirated 2.4-litre four-cylinder boxer engine mounted low in the car. Toyota lists 228 horsepower and a 0–60 mph time of 6.1 seconds for that model. These are the manufacturer’s stated figures, not independent test results. The GR86 belongs among four-cylinder sports cars, but the available specifications do not establish it as a supercar. Its inclusion is useful precisely because it shows the breadth of the phrase: a low-mounted boxer and sports-car intent can be compelling without making a car exotic or placing it in the same performance bracket as the Emira.

These numbers provide context, not a leaderboard. They mix manufacturer claims with magazine data, use different units and acceleration targets, and cover different years and markets. None is an independent, like-for-like test of all the cars.

Why this is not a definitive list of seven
The evidence supports several named examples, but it does not establish seven verified cars or an authoritative “seven best” selection. Adding more models would require checking each exact engine, trim and model year; otherwise, a list can quietly mix four-cylinder versions with six-cylinder siblings or present old cars as current choices.
For the same reason, availability should be checked locally before treating the Alpine A110 or Alfa Romeo 4C as new-car options. The 2022 comparison is useful for identifying them as four-cylinder examples, not for establishing what is on sale now.
