Ford’s F-Series has not been overtaken: Ford says it sold 561,508 F-Series trucks through September 2026 and remains on track for a 50th consecutive year as America’s best-selling truck. But Ram has reason to press its advantage: Stellantis reported year-over-year growth in both Ram 1500 retail sales and total Ram pickup sales in the second quarter. Those figures show momentum, not a like-for-like sales-count comparison.
Why Ram has Ford’s attention
Stellantis reported that Ram 1500 retail sales rose 9% year over year in Q2 2026, while total Ram pickup sales rose 14% compared with Q2 2025. The first figure covers Ram 1500 retail sales; the second covers the broader Ram pickup lineup. Neither is an absolute unit total that can be directly compared with Ford’s F-Series tally. Stellantis’ Q2 sales release provides the growth figures.

That distinction matters. Growth rates can signal that a rival is gaining traction, but they do not tell readers how many trucks each brand sold over matching periods or how much the gap changed. The reported results make “scared” a fair description of competitive pressure—not evidence that Ram has taken the sales crown.

In its October 2, 2026 Q3 sales release, Ford reported 67,448 F-Series sales in September, up 2.4% year over year, and 561,508 units sold through September. Ford said the F-Series was on track for its 50th consecutive year as America’s best-selling truck. Ford’s Q3 2026 sales release is the source for those figures and the company’s annual-sales outlook.

Ford also characterized F-Series as having the highest retail share and retail revenue among full-line truck brands in Q3, alongside the segment’s lowest incentive spending. Those are Ford’s claims about the quarter, not an independent head-to-head evaluation. They add context to Ford’s sales position, but do not erase Ram’s reported growth.
What the numbers do—and do not—prove
- They show a competitive trend: Stellantis’ reported growth rates indicate stronger Ram sales than in the same quarter a year earlier.
- They do not establish the remaining sales gap: the available Ford number is an F-Series unit count through September; the Ram figures are Q2 year-over-year growth rates.
- They do not prove a product-quality contest: sales releases alone cannot show which truck is better for an individual buyer.
The sources reviewed do not establish a matching Q3 2026 Ram pickup unit total. A September-versus-September comparison of F-Series and Ram sales—and the current size or movement of that gap—therefore remains unresolved.

What the dependability claim means for buyers
Stellantis said the Ram 1500 ranked first in the large light-duty pickup segment of the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. The study concerns owner-reported problems in three-year-old vehicles over the preceding 12 months, so it is evidence about that surveyed group and period—not a prediction that every new Ram will be trouble-free. Stellantis’ award announcement describes the recognition.
How to compare an F-150 and Ram 1500 as purchases
Sales momentum can tell you which brand is gaining ground, but it cannot settle which truck suits your work, budget or daily driving. Compare vehicles with the same model year and closely matched equipment:

- Price and incentives: compare actual offers for the same cab, bed and trim, including dealer discounts and any conditions attached to incentives.
- Powertrain and capability: match engine and drivetrain, then check the manufacturer’s towing and payload ratings for the exact configuration. A model’s maximum rating may not apply to the truck you are considering.
- Fuel economy and ownership terms: compare ratings for the specific powertrain and review warranty coverage rather than assuming all configurations are alike.
- Cabin and availability: check the features you will use and whether the desired configuration is available locally.
- Reliability evidence: distinguish studies of older vehicles and owner-reported problems from predictions about a new model year.
The current sales reports do not provide a controlled F-150-versus-Ram 1500 test, a transaction-price comparison, or configuration-matched towing and payload figures. They are useful for understanding brand momentum, not for declaring a winner in those purchase factors.

Ram’s 2026 Ram guide shows that cargo-box configurations vary; that does not establish that a particular cover fits every truck. Check the accessory maker’s fitment information for your exact vehicle.
