The Mustang GTD is a much more specialized, street-legal track car with a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 rated at 815 horsepower, a rear-mounted dual-clutch transaxle and race-derived chassis and aerodynamic hardware.

What do the power figures mean?
Mustang GT: naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8
Ford’s 2025 GT specification gives the naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 480 hp and 415 lb-ft. With active exhaust, the listed output is 486 hp and 418 lb-ft. Those are figures for the cited model-year specification, not a promise that every GT configuration has the same equipment or output. Ford’s 2025 Mustang GT specifications
Mustang GTD: supercharged 5.2-liter V8
Ford rates the GTD’s supercharged 5.2-liter V8 at 815 hp and 664 lb-ft. That is a substantially different powertrain from the GT’s naturally aspirated 5.0-liter engine, not simply a higher-output version of the same setup. Ford describes the GTD as street-legal in its performance material. Ford’s GTD performance announcement
Ford’s Mustang GTD chief program engineer Greg Goodall said the engine has “more horsepower per liter than the Porsche 911 GT3 RS.” That is Ford’s engineering claim, not an independent comparative measurement. Ford’s September 16, 2024 announcement

How are their transmissions and chassis different?
GT: a conventional front-engine Mustang setup
The cited GT specification pairs its V8 with a six-speed manual, rev matching and a 3.55 limited-slip rear axle. Ford lists hydraulic, gas-pressurized outboard-mounted dampers for that configuration. These details describe the cited specification; they should not be taken as a complete description of every GT variant or option combination. Ford’s 2025 Mustang GT specifications
GTD: rear transaxle and track-focused systems
The GTD moves its eight-speed dual-clutch transmission to the rear in a transaxle, linking it to the engine with a carbon-fiber driveshaft. Ford says this layout supports near 50/50 weight distribution. Its other specified systems include active aerodynamics, carbon-ceramic brakes and inboard rear suspension with semi-active dampers. Ford’s UK material also describes the dynamic rear wing, dual ride height and carbon-fiber body panels. Ford UK’s Mustang GTD overview

- SCALE: Precision-crafted 1:38 scale die-cast metal model of the 2006 Ford Mustang GT, measuring approximately 5 inches in length
- AUTHENTIC DESIGN: Detailed exterior features including realistic headlights, grille, and wheels that mirror the iconic 2006 Mustang GT styling
- FUNCTIONAL FEATURES: Working doors that open and close, plus pull-back action motor for interactive play
- CONSTRUCTION: Durable die-cast metal body with plastic components and premium paint finish
- REALISTIC DETAILS: Features accurate wheel design, distinctive Mustang grille, and authentic body styling of the GT model
Those differences support describing the GT as a road-going V8 performance Mustang and the GTD as a highly specialized, track-capable road car. That is an interpretation of Ford’s stated hardware and purpose, not the result of a controlled comparison test.
Are the GTD’s Nürburgring and top-speed numbers directly comparable with a GT?
No. Ford’s current GTD FAQ reports an official Nürburgring lap time of 6 minutes 40.835 seconds. Ford’s 2024 performance announcement gives the GTD a 202 mph top track speed. These are GTD results; no same-condition GT lap-time comparison is established here, so they should not be presented as a measured GT-versus-GTD test. Ford’s 2026 Mustang GTD FAQ

What about price and availability?
A current, like-for-like U.S. price comparison is not established here, and old starting prices should not be treated as current. Availability and ordering depend on market and date. Ford’s 2026 update said European GTD applications opened September 14 and were expected to close October 16, with 500 units expected for Europe. That is a time-limited European application window and allocation—not a statement about U.S. ordering, current inventory or availability elsewhere. Ford’s 2026 Mustang GTD FAQ
For a purchase decision, check Ford’s current information for the specific market and model year, then confirm ordering status and pricing with a local Ford dealer. A GT and a GTD are not interchangeable choices at different trim levels: the former is the conventional V8 performance Mustang, while the latter is built around a much higher-output engine and specialized track hardware.
