The Devon GTX was announced in 2009 as a low-volume American supercar built around a Viper-derived V10. Devon Motor Works planned to build it in California, but canceled the project before series production. Reporting describes two prototypes—not the proposed run of customer cars.
What was the Devon GTX?
Devon Motor Works introduced the GTX in 2009 as its first vehicle. Founder Scott Devon and Swedish designer Daniel Paulin were credited with its design. The company pitched it as a distinctly American, design-led supercar, with aircraft-quality carbon-fiber bodywork and power from Dodge Viper hardware. Its proposed California production facility was supposed to begin work in the first quarter of 2010; that plan did not become a regular production run. PistonHeads reported the cancellation in January 2010.
That ambition helps explain the appeal behind the title’s “America deserved” hook: the GTX promised an American V10, a manual gearbox, bespoke carbon-fiber styling and very limited production. That is an interpretation of the concept, not a claim that the car reached customers or proved itself as a production supercar.
What specifications and price did Devon announce?
Devon’s 2009 launch material presented the following as planned specifications and commercial terms—not independently verified figures from a series-production car. Launch coverage reproduced the announced figures.

Because the GTX did not enter series production, these are best read as launch-era claims and plans, not as a complete production specification, transaction price or independently tested performance record.
Did the Devon GTX set lap records?
Devon’s June 2009 announcement said the GTX had set an unofficial lap record at Willow Springs during validation. Later launch coverage claimed production-car lap records at Willow Springs and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Those are company claims reported in launch material, not evidence here of an independently sanctioned record: the available accounts do not establish a complete timing method, comparison class or sanctioning-body verification. Devon’s launch announcement also framed the car as a performance-focused design. Founder Scott Devon said, “We set out to design a vehicle that was quintessentially American, both in its shape and in its performance.”

What happened to the Devon GTX?
The production plan was canceled before it could begin. On January 6, 2010, PistonHeads reported that only two prototypes had been built on the current Dodge Viper basis. It reproduced Devon’s explanation: “The Viper platform being discontinued and the inability to amortize tooling costs are the key reasons.” That is a statement quoted by PistonHeads, rather than an independently recorded interview. The same report said the company might still race the Laguna Seca car with Justin Bell in GT2; it described a possibility, not confirmation that the race took place.
A March 2026 Top Gear retrospective adds a different emphasis. It says Devon tried to acquire Viper production rights, that Dodge would not sell them for less than $10 million against a reported $5 million budget, and that the financial crisis contributed to the project’s demise. Those details are retrospective reporting. Taken together, the accounts point to a project dependent on Viper-derived hardware and production access, with economics that did not support the announced low-volume plan; they do not establish one uncontested cause or the precise weight of each factor.

Was the Devon GTX ever built?
Yes, in the limited sense that reporting describes two prototypes. No, in the sense many readers mean when asking whether it became a production car: Devon did not deliver the announced annual run of customer vehicles. Top Gear describes a red track car and a black example. It reports that the black car was auctioned in 2012 for $200,000, despite estimates above $500,000. That retrospective account is useful context, but it does not establish the complete provenance, present owner or current location of either prototype. Precise valuation or provenance questions require independently verified auction documentation.

Contemporary reporting says the two prototypes were built on the then-current Viper basis, and Devon’s launch material described a Viper-derived 8.4-liter V10. That supports calling the GTX Viper-powered and Viper-based, but it does not prove that every component was shared or interchangeable.

Those are Viper resources; no available source establishes that a particular Viper part, accessory or manual fits either GTX prototype.
