Ford GT/109 was a 1965 open-top competition prototype that raced at Le Mans for Ford of France, retired with gearbox trouble, and later returned to Shelby American for development work. It was offered at Mecum Indy on May 17, 2025, but did not sell: Hagerty records a $7.75 million high bid, not a completed sale.
What was Ford GT/109?
GT/109 belonged to Ford’s original GT prototype program, rather than being a later GT40 road car. Robin Nooy’s 2025 account in The Petrolhead Corner describes 12 prototypes built between January 1964 and April 1965, including five roadsters, with two roadsters surviving. Those are figures reported by that article, not a separately verified factory census. Read the GT/109 history at Monochrome Watches.
RM Sotheby’s chassis reference gives context for the roadster’s construction: GT/108 and GT/109 were delivered as bare chassis by Abbey Panels in October 1964, completed in March 1965, tested at Silverstone by John Whitmore and Dickie Attwood, and shipped to Shelby-American on March 8 with a temporary-import note for testing. How did GT/109 race at Le Mans?
Ford of France entered GT/109 in the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans with Maurice Trintignant and Guy Ligier. Nooy’s account says its race number changed from 9 to 15 and that it retired after 11 laps when its gearbox failed. The article identifies it as the only open-top GT40 to race at Le Mans.

What happened to the car after Le Mans?
After the race, GT/109 returned to Shelby American and was used for development work connected with the J-car program, which led toward the GT40 Mk IV, according to Nooy’s account. The car’s story therefore continued beyond its brief Le Mans appearance: it became a development vehicle rather than simply leaving the competition program after its retirement.
The same account traces its later ownership to Hollywood stuntman and car customizer Dean Jeffries, followed by acquisition by Dana Mecum in 2013. A subsequent restoration returned it to its 1965 Ford of France presentation. At Pebble Beach in 2016, it placed second in class, the article reports.

What are GT/109’s reported specifications?
Nooy describes the restored car with a 289-cubic-inch (4.7-liter) V8 and a ZF five-speed gearbox, magnesium Halibrand wheels, and cream-white-and-blue Ford of France livery. The account says the engine and gearbox are period-correct and rebuilt. These are details attributed to the article about the car’s presentation; they should not be mistaken for independently established original build records.

No. Hagerty’s auction-history record lists GT/109 as Mecum Auctions’ Indianapolis lot S139 on May 17, 2025, with a $7,750,000 high bid and the result “Not sold.” That figure is the reported high bid, not a sale price or a confirmed market value, and the auction appearance does not establish that the car is currently available.
