Those were CJs, not Wranglers. The Wrangler YJ followed the CJ series in 1987, and the Wrangler Rubicon 392 arrived as a 2021 model. The distinction matters: the earlier Jeep was a V8 predecessor, not an “original V8 Wrangler.”
Was there a V8 Jeep before the Rubicon 392?
Yes. Jeep’s official history says CJ models came equipped with AMC-built 304- or 360-cubic-inch V8 engines beginning in 1973. The history page says Renegade models typically featured the 304, but that broad overview is not enough to identify the engine in every individual CJ. For a particular vehicle, check its build documentation and model-year records. Jeep’s 1970s history
The CJ-5 had been introduced in 1955 and continued until 1983, when it was discontinued as demand shifted toward the CJ-7, according to Stellantis’ historical timeline. The V8-era CJ therefore belongs to the earlier CJ family—not to the later Wrangler nameplate. Stellantis’ Jeep history
When did the Jeep Wrangler get a V8?
The Wrangler name came after the CJ series. Jeep Canada dates the Wrangler’s unveiling to the 1986 Chicago Auto Show; Stellantis describes the YJ as a 1987 introduction that followed the CJ series. These are different milestones, not conflicting dates: one is the unveiling, the other the introduction. Jeep Canada’s history Stellantis’ Jeep history

The Wrangler Rubicon 392 was announced on November 17, 2020, as a 2021 model for North American customers. Jeep projected sales to begin in the first quarter of 2021. In its launch announcement, the company described the 392 as the return of a factory V8 to the Wrangler engine bay after “nearly 40 years.” That phrasing refers to the Wrangler, not to all Jeep vehicles: CJ models had used V8s before the Wrangler existed. How the CJ V8 and Rubicon 392 compare
This is a comparison across different generations and nameplates, not a controlled performance test. Jeep’s historical overview establishes the CJ engine displacements and some trim context; the 2020 Rubicon 392 announcement supplies detailed specifications for that launch-era model.

What the comparison does—and does not—show
The historical record supports a clear lineage point: Jeep’s CJ V8s came before the Wrangler, while the Rubicon 392 was a factory V8 Wrangler. The cited history and launch material do not provide a like-for-like performance comparison between a 1970s CJ and the 392, so a numerical contest between them would go beyond the available figures.
Jeep/Stellantis’ current historical overview labels the JL Rubicon 392 “2021-present” and repeats its 470-hp and 470-lb-ft ratings. That label is a historical overview, not confirmation that the 392 is offered in every present-day market or model year. The 2020 launch announcement specified North America and said the model would not be introduced in Europe; check a market’s current model-year information for present availability.
