Ford is backing a new 100-megawatt solar park near Coldwater, Michigan, as part of a larger renewable-energy commitment with DTE Energy. The park is the first of several projects tied to Ford’s agreement for up to 650 megawatts of renewable energy through DTE’s CleanVision MIGreenPower program.
How does it help power Ford’s Michigan factories? The arrangement works through renewable-energy attribution and support for new Michigan projects—not evidence that Cold Creek’s electricity is physically routed directly to particular Ford plants.
What is Cold Creek Solar Park?
DTE Energy said construction of Cold Creek Solar Park near Coldwater was complete on October 1, 2026. The facility has a capacity of 100 megawatts. DTE calls it the first of several solar parks supporting Ford Motor Company’s Michigan renewable-electricity commitment. DTE’s completion announcement
Electrek reported the project cost at $194 million and estimated its output as equivalent to the electricity use of roughly 23,000–25,000 Michigan households. Those are Electrek’s reported figures; DTE’s completion announcement does not state the cost or household equivalence. Electrek’s report

How does the solar park support Ford’s factories?
Ford participates in DTE’s CleanVision MIGreenPower program. DTE says the program lets customers attribute their electricity use to renewable power generated in Michigan, while helping support the development of new solar and wind projects. This is an accounting and project-development arrangement; the available announcements do not establish that Cold Creek’s output is physically delivered straight to specific Ford factories.
That distinction also matters when Ford describes its goal of using the equivalent of 100% carbon-free electricity for vehicles made in Michigan. It is a renewable-electricity equivalence target through the utility program, not a claim that Cold Creek alone supplies every factory’s full load at every hour.

Cold Creek is one part of a larger commitment
Ford agreed in 2022 to procure up to 650 megawatts of renewable energy through MIGreenPower. DTE’s 2022 announcement said it would add 650 megawatts of new solar capacity in Michigan for Ford. Cold Creek’s 100-megawatt capacity is one facility within that broader commitment; its completion does not establish that all three solar farms described by Ford, or the entire 650-megawatt commitment, are complete.

DTE described the 2022 agreement as the “largest renewable energy purchase ever made in the U.S. from a utility,” citing BloombergNEF’s Corporate PPA Database. That was DTE’s characterization at the time, not a current 2026 ranking.

Ford’s Michigan target moved from 2025 to 2027
DTE’s 2022 announcement set a 2025 target for every Ford vehicle manufactured in Michigan to be assembled with the equivalent of 100% carbon-free electricity. Ford’s 2026 report now gives the target as the end of 2027 and describes three dedicated solar farms for its Michigan operations. The sources do not explain the change in deadline.

DTE’s latest release describes community benefits generally for projects supported through MIGreenPower, but it does not quantify Cold Creek-specific jobs or tax revenue. The job figures above come from DTE’s 2022 estimates for construction of solar arrays under the broader Ford agreement; they should not be read as actual Cold Creek employment totals.
