The partners plan to debut an all-new WRC27-era car in 2029, so Ford’s factory-programme start and the new car’s first competition are separate milestones.
When is Ford returning to the WRC?
Ford Racing announced on October 1, 2026, that its full factory-backed WRC programme will begin in 2028. The all-new car is planned to make its competitive debut in 2029. Ford’s announcement sets out those dates as distinct steps in the programme, not a single 2029 return.

Who will run Ford’s WRC programme?
Ford is renewing its partnership with M-Sport, which it describes as its rally partner of 30 years. M-Sport says the arrangement reunites it with the manufacturer whose factory backing it last carried in 2012. Ford Racing’s announcement frames the 2028 campaign as a full factory-backed programme working with M-Sport.

What happens between now and the new car’s debut?
M-Sport has announced a 2027 bridge entry using the Ford Fiesta Rally2, updated with a WRC kit to meet the FIA’s WRC27 regulations. That is distinct from the all-new car planned for 2029; no model name for the new car has been announced.

Why is Ford linking the programme to its European cars?
Ford says WRC competition will help shape a coming European portfolio of five “multi-energy” electric and hybrid vehicles. The company has not named a production-car inspiration for the planned 2029 rally car, so the announcement does not establish which road model, if any, it will resemble.

Ford presents the return as part of its rallying history, describing it as building on 50 years of rally racing success. That is Ford’s characterization, rather than an independently calculated statistic. Jim Baumbick, President of Ford Europe, said: “Rallying is where Ford’s character faces its toughest test, and where generations of fans come to share the thrill of seeing a car take on the impossible.”
