A reported 1971 Abarth OTAS Grand Prix 1000, now in Mudgee, New South Wales, is described in a Silodrome sale feature as a US-delivered, restored example with Lombardi coachwork and a substantially modified 1,050 cc engine. The car is presented as for sale, but the feature gives no asking price, and its current availability, provenance and condition have not been independently confirmed.
What is an Abarth OTAS Grand Prix 1000?
It belongs to a family of compact Fiat 850-based coupes shaped by Carrozzeria Francis Lombardi and subsequently sold or tuned under several names. Silodrome reports that the Grand Prix made its international debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1968, with styling credited to Giuseppe Rinaldi. Its related badges do not denote one uniform specification: engine, tuning and intended market varied.

- Lombardi Grand Prix: the core Fiat 850-based coupe.
- Giannini 1000 Grand Prix: a tuned branch, including the Tigre version listed in the Auta5P catalogue.
- OTAS: an export-oriented branch; Silodrome expands the name as Officina Trasformazioni Automobili Sportive.
- Abarth Scorpione: a related but distinct development, not another name for the OTAS Grand Prix. RM Sotheby’s describes it as derived from the Lombardi Grand Prix and discusses its separate Abarth engine development.
Silodrome says the US-bound OTAS 820 used an 817 cc engine to stay below a period 50-cubic-inch emissions threshold. That is a historical account attributed to the feature, not independent confirmation of the car described for sale.
What is reported about this 1971 example?
The Silodrome feature identifies it as a US-delivered 1971 car, now in Australia, with Lombardi coachwork. Its reported powertrain is a rebuilt 1,050 cc inline-four based on an Abarth A112 unit. Listed engine equipment includes a Weber 40 DCOE carburetor, larger stainless-steel valves, sport cam, A112 70HP ignition, lighter flywheel, reinforced clutch components, five-litre Abarth OT sump, stainless extractors and MSD Digital 6A ignition. The feature says power goes to the rear wheels through a four-speed open-gate manual transmission.

- Abarth OT rear axles
- Koni dampers and Eibach springs
- Campagnolo Ragno magnesium wheels
For context only, Silodrome gives a baseline Grand Prix specification of an 843 cc Fiat OHV engine, 47 bhp at 6,400 rpm, 43 lb-ft at 3,600 rpm and a 630 kg curb weight. These general figures are not specifications for the modified car. The feature also places the second series in 1970, noting cooling and wheel changes.

What does the feature say about restoration and records?
Silodrome describes bare-metal body preparation and repainting, a retrimmed cabin, and a package of records. The reported documents and material include wiring diagrams, paint information, import documents, a contemporary newspaper article and restoration photographs. The feature does not authenticate the work or paperwork, so a buyer would need to review the originals and match them to the car.

Available figures should be treated as estimates, not a verified production census. Silodrome puts total production across Grand Prix versions at around 500 or more. For US OTAS 820 deliveries, it attributes a figure of 65 to John Rich and notes that other accounts reach 100. These numbers concern the wider family or a different OTAS version, not a confirmed count of cars matching this 1,050 cc example.

Is this OTAS Grand Prix still for sale?
The Silodrome feature, dated October 1, 2026, describes the car as for sale, but supplies no asking price and does not confirm present availability or a completed sale. Shannons Auctions also has historical material about a distinct 1971 OTAS 1000 Grand Prix Coupe from February 12, 2023; that earlier auction does not establish the status of this car.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should a prospective buyer verify?
The feature is an editorial account by Ben Branch, not an inspection report or title verification. Before relying on its description, a buyer should establish the live sale terms and check the car itself and its paperwork.

- Confirm the sale: obtain current seller details, asking price, location and written confirmation that the car is available.
- Match identity and documents: inspect chassis and engine numbers and compare them with ownership records, the reported import paperwork and any registration documents. The feature does not establish current registration or independently confirm the import history.
- Review the restoration record: examine invoices, photographs, paint information and wiring diagrams; check that documents relate to this specific vehicle and work.
- Commission a specialist inspection: have a qualified classic-car professional assess the modified engine, transmission, suspension and brakes, along with body condition and structural repairs.
- Clarify what is original: ask which components remain from the car’s earlier configuration, which are replacements or upgrades, and whether engine or chassis numbers are documented as matching. The feature does not establish matching numbers.
These checks are prudent because the car is reported to have substantial modifications and a restoration; they do not imply that a defect has been found.
