Fernando Alonso says he expects to race in Formula 1 beyond 2027 after extending his Aston Martin contract. The team announced on 29 September 2026 that Alonso and Lance Stroll had signed long-term extensions, confirming Alonso for the team’s 2027 lineup and beyond. The announcement does not state an exact contract end date; Alonso’s belief that he could keep racing for several years is his own expectation, not a guarantee of how long the deal lasts.
What Alonso said about his F1 future
In an interview published by AS on 29 September 2026, Alonso was asked whether this would be his last contract as an F1 driver. He replied, “No, creo que no será el último año en Fórmula 1” — translated as, “No, I don’t think it will be my last year in Formula 1.” He added, “Creo que puedo seguir varios años” (“I think I can continue for several years”).

Alonso also said he expected to remain with Aston Martin for a long time. He left open whether that would mean staying in the cockpit or taking another role later; the team has not announced a post-driving position for him.
What Aston Martin’s announcement confirms
Aston Martin’s announcement says Alonso and Stroll have extended their long-term contracts and confirms both drivers for the team beyond the 2026 season. It does not publish the new deal’s precise duration, expiry date, or other contract terms. So while Alonso is confirmed for 2027, the public announcement does not establish how many seasons the contract covers.

The team’s statement quotes Alonso saying he is “committed for the long term” and that racing remains his passion. Aston Martin also reported that he had recorded 85 Grands Prix and eight podiums, including two second-place finishes, with the team since joining in 2023. Those are figures published by the team in its announcement.

When Alonso signed his previous multi-year Aston Martin deal in April 2024, he described it as “probably my last contract” at that time. He explained that he wanted to be sure he still had the strength and motivation to race for a few more years. He also pointed to the team’s ambitions around the 2026 regulations and its Honda partnership. That was his outlook on the earlier deal, not a statement about the extension he signed in 2026.

His position became less certain as the previous deal approached its end: on 30 April 2026, Alonso said he was open to different outcomes and would weigh the car’s progress before speaking with the team. The September renewal and his latest comments supersede that earlier uncertainty.
