The YANGWANG U9 Xtreme is currently the fastest production car by documented top speed. It reached 308.4 mph (496.22 km/h) at Germany’s ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg circuit on September 14, 2025. That result puts it ahead of the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ prototype-derived car, the SSC Tuatara and the Koenigsegg Agera RS.

There is an important qualification: these numbers were not all produced under identical conditions. Some are one-way maximum-speed passes, some are two-way averages, and others are manufacturer claims or theoretical estimates. The ranking below separates documented results from cars that are expected to be fast but have not completed a comparable official run.

Fastest cars in the world: the verified ranking

This list ranks production or production-intended road cars by their highest publicly documented speed. A single-direction run can produce a higher number than a two-way average because wind, road gradient and other conditions affect the result. The test format is included so the figures are not presented as directly equivalent when they are not.

1. YANGWANG U9 Xtreme — 308.4 mph

The YANGWANG U9 Xtreme is the fastest car on this list by documented maximum speed. BYD says the electric hypercar reached 308.4 mph at the ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg track in Germany on September 14, 2025.

  • AUTHENTIC DESIGN: Highly detailed 1:36 scale die-cast metal replica of the Lamborghini Veneno supercar with striking finish and Italian flag striping
  • FUNCTIONAL FEATURES: Working doors that open and close, plus pull-back action motor for interactive play value
  • PREMIUM CONSTRUCTION: Die-cast metal body with plastic components and rubber tires for durability and realistic appearance
  • PERFECT SIZE: Compact 5-inch length makes it ideal for display or play while maintaining impressive detail and proportion
  • QUALITY MATERIALS: Constructed using high-grade die-cast metal and quality materials for long-lasting performance and safety

It is an especially notable result because the U9 Xtreme is electric rather than powered by a large-displacement petrol engine. BYD describes the car as a production model, although availability is extremely limited: production is capped at no more than 30 units. The 308.4-mph figure was a maximum-speed attempt rather than a two-way public-road average, so it should be compared with the other one-way results on that basis.

2. Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ — 304.773 mph

The Chiron Super Sport 300+ was the first road-car project to break the 300-mph barrier in a widely documented test. Andy Wallace drove a near-production prototype derivative to 304.773 mph at Volkswagen’s Ehra-Lessien test track in 2019.

The detail that often gets lost is the difference between the record car and the customer version. Bugatti built 30 customer cars, but those cars were specified with a 440-km/h (273.4-mph) top-speed limit. In other words, 304.773 mph is the speed of the prototype-derived test car, not the normal unrestricted top speed of every customer Chiron Super Sport 300+.

3. SSC Tuatara — 295.0 mph

The SSC Tuatara reached 295.0 mph at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center on May 14, 2022. The run was made by customer Larry Caplin, with SSC citing dual Racelogic VBOX GNSS systems and an additional Life Racing GPS unit.

The Tuatara also has a more meaningful two-way result: SSC lists a 282.9-mph average from its 2021 test. The 295.0-mph figure ranks higher because this table uses the highest documented speed, but the two-way average is the better number for comparisons where wind and track conditions matter.

4. Koenigsegg Agera RS — 284.55 mph

The Agera RS produced a 284.55-mph pass on a closed section of Nevada State Route 160 in November 2017. Its accepted production-car record figure, however, is the 277.87-mph average of two runs in opposite directions.

That distinction made the Agera RS record unusually credible. Running both ways helps cancel out the effect of wind and a slight gradient. The car’s record-setting run was conducted on a public road, and the Agera RS remained one of the fastest production cars ever tested even after newer cars posted higher single-direction numbers.

5. Hennessey Venom GT — 270.49 mph

The Hennessey Venom GT reached 270.49 mph at Kennedy Space Center on February 14, 2014, in a Racelogic-verified run. It was based on the Lotus Exige platform but heavily modified, with a twin-turbocharged V8 and a very low production volume.

The run was real, but it did not qualify for the usual official production-car record criteria. Hennessey produced only 29 Venom GTs, and the test was a one-way pass rather than a two-way average. That is why the Venom GT can appear high in a top-speed list without being described as the official production-car record holder.

6. Rimac Nevera R — 268.2 mph

The Rimac Nevera R reached 268.2 mph (431.45 km/h) in high-speed mode during Rimac’s independently verified 2025 performance test. It is the fastest car here that uses a fully electric powertrain apart from the faster YANGWANG U9 Xtreme.

Rimac limits the Nevera R to 40 cars worldwide. Its speed is only part of the story: the Nevera R was developed as a more focused version of the already rapid Nevera, combining extreme acceleration with a higher top-speed capability. As with several cars above it, the published figure is a maximum-speed result rather than a two-way average.

7. Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport — 267.856 mph

The Veyron Super Sport recorded a 267.856-mph two-way average in 2010, with TÜV and Guinness representatives present. It used an 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W16 engine and became the benchmark that later hypercars had to beat.

There was a dispute over the car’s electronic limiter configuration. Guinness temporarily removed the record before later confirming Bugatti’s production-car record after reviewing the circumstances. The figure remains one of the strongest in this ranking because it was a two-way average rather than a single peak pass.

8. McLaren Speedtail — 250 mph

The McLaren Speedtail is electronically limited to 250 mph, making it slower at maximum speed than the other cars listed here but still one of the quickest road cars ever built. McLaren stated and repeatedly tested that top speed during development.

The Speedtail was not designed primarily as a record-attempt car. Its focus was high-speed grand touring, combining a three-seat layout with a hybrid powertrain and a long, low-drag body. Unlike the limited-run hypercars above, its 250-mph ceiling is an electronic limit rather than the maximum that its aerodynamics and powertrain could necessarily achieve without restriction.

Cars that are often called the fastest—but should be listed separately

Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut

The Jesko Absolut is engineered specifically for high speed. Koenigsegg quotes a drag coefficient of 0.278 and lists up to 1,600 horsepower on E85, while its long-tail body and reduced-downforce aerodynamic package are intended to minimize drag.

Its frequently repeated 330-mph figure is a theoretical or projected estimate, not a completed official top-speed run published on Koenigsegg’s current model page. It may eventually challenge the cars above, but it should not be ranked at 330 mph yet.

Hennessey Venom F5

Hennessey has stated a target of more than 500 km/h (311 mph) for the Venom F5, with an independently validated two-way run planned. That is a target, not a completed 311-mph production-car record. Development testing above 250 mph should not be presented as proof that the car has already reached 311 mph.

Bugatti W16 Mistral

Bugatti says the W16 Mistral is capable of more than 420 km/h (261 mph), which would make it a strong candidate for the fastest production roadster. However, that is a manufacturer capability claim rather than a documented result that can be placed in the verified ranking.

Why fastest-car lists disagree

There is no single universal test format for production-car top-speed claims. The following differences can change the ranking:

  • One-way versus two-way: A tailwind can raise a one-way speed substantially. Two-way averages reduce that effect.
  • Prototype versus customer car: A development car may use different gearing, software, tires, bodywork or a removed speed limiter.
  • Production volume: A car built in very small numbers may not meet an organization’s definition of a production car.
  • Verification: GPS equipment, independent observers and published test data make a result easier to assess than an unsupported manufacturer claim.
  • Electronic limits: A listed top speed may be a software ceiling, as with the McLaren Speedtail, rather than the physical limit of the car.

For that reason, “fastest car in the world” needs a qualifier. The YANGWANG U9 Xtreme currently holds the highest documented speed in this ranking, while the Agera RS and Veyron Super Sport have particularly strong two-way-average credentials.

Commonly repeated claims that need correction

  1. The Jesko Absolut already runs 330 mph. No completed official maximum-speed run has established that figure.
  2. The Chiron Super Sport 300+ customer cars all reached 304.773 mph. The record run used a near-production prototype derivative; customer cars were stated to be limited to 440 km/h.
  3. The SSC Tuatara officially averaged 316.11 mph. SSC’s current documented figures are a 282.9-mph two-way average and a later 295.0-mph one-way result.
  4. The Venom GT was the official production-car record holder. Its 270.49-mph run was verified, but its one-way format and 29-car production run prevented it from meeting common record criteria.

FAQ

What is the fastest car in the world?

The YANGWANG U9 Xtreme is currently the fastest by documented top speed, reaching 308.4 mph (496.22 km/h) at ATP Papenburg in Germany on September 14, 2025. BYD says production is limited to no more than 30 cars.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Has a production car really exceeded 300 mph?

Yes. The YANGWANG U9 Xtreme reached 308.4 mph, while the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ prototype-derived car reached 304.773 mph. The Bugatti customer version was limited to 440 km/h (273.4 mph), so its test result should not be treated as the normal customer-car top speed.

Is the Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut the fastest car?

Not by a verified top-speed result. Its approximately 330-mph figure is a theoretical or projected estimate. Koenigsegg has not published a completed maximum-speed run for the Jesko Absolut on its current official model page.

Why do some cars have one-way and two-way speed figures?

A two-way test runs in opposite directions and averages the results to reduce the effects of wind and road gradient. A one-way pass can produce a higher number, but it is less directly comparable with a two-way average.

The Bottom Line

The YANGWANG U9 Xtreme is the current leader by documented maximum speed at 308.4 mph. The Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ follows with a 304.773-mph prototype-derived run, while the SSC Tuatara and Koenigsegg Agera RS round out the next tier. Cars such as the Jesko Absolut and Venom F5 may eventually change the order, but their headline speeds remain projections until they complete independently documented runs.
