Start the car, buckle up and adjust your mirrors, then drive gently as the engine warms. If ice or snow blocks your view, wait for the defroster and clear the vehicle before setting off; visibility is a safety requirement, not an engine warm-up.
How long should you let a modern car idle?
For most modern gasoline passenger cars, idle only for the brief time it takes to buckle up and adjust your mirrors, then drive gently. AAA gives this as general cold-weather advice, while the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says modern vehicles do not require winter warm-up and advises against starting the engine before you are ready to drive.

There is no single warm-up time that applies to every car. Rather than waiting for the engine or cabin to reach a particular temperature, take it easy after startup. AAA says an engine and interior warm faster while driving than while idling.

Why did drivers used to warm cars up?
The advice made more sense for older carbureted cars. As David Bennett, senior automotive manager at AAA, explained to AAA Via, a driver could experience rough running or stalling if the car was driven while its choke was engaged. Modern electronic engine controls adjust for operating conditions, changing the ordinary cold-start advice. That historical explanation is not a rule for every older vehicle; follow the instructions for yours.

- Smart Temperature Control Protection-Equipped with a built-in automatic constant temperature controller, our engine heater pad automatically powers off when the temperature reaches 194°F (90°C) and resumes heating when it drops below 122°F (50°C).This effectively prevents overheating risks and ensures safe use
- Self-Adhesive & Easy Installation-The back of engine block heater pad is equipped with strong Super Strong Backing Glue adhesive.Simply clean the metal surface, peel off the protective film, and paste it firmly. It is suitable for metal surfaces such as engine oil pans, transmissions, and fuel tanks
- Safety Usage Reminder -This engine heater pad is ONLY for use on metal surfaces.Do not stick it on plastic parts or near air inlets.Ensure the surface is clean and free of oil stains before use.It is recommended to apply high-temperature sealant around the edges to enhance adhesion (sealant not included)
- Convenient Use & Comprehensive After-Sales Service-Our block heater for diesel engine comes with a 68-inch (approximately 1.7 meters) UL-certified power cord. The plug is standard, allowing easy connection to household sockets. It is convenient to use without the need for modifications.Covered with high-grade silicone,it features oil resistance, acid resistance, water resistance, and low-temperature resistance. It adapts to various harsh environments, offering a long service life and high reliability
When should you wait before driving?
Wait if your windshield or other windows are still obstructed. Use the defroster as needed and scrape away ice; clear snow from the rest of the vehicle before driving, too. Snow left on a vehicle can come loose and hit traffic behind you, Bennett told AAA Via.
Do not treat a running engine as a substitute for clearing your view. Set off only when you can see clearly and the vehicle is cleared for safe travel.

What if your owner’s manual says to idle?
Vehicle-specific directions take priority over general advice. For example, the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 4500 diesel owner’s manual says, “When the engine is cold, let it run for a few minutes before driving.” For that manual, an engine coolant heater is recommended at or below −18 °C (0 °F).
This is a specific instruction for that heavy-duty diesel model, not a general rule for all diesel vehicles or gasoline cars. Check your own owner’s manual for its cold-start procedure and any temperature thresholds.
