The “new Android Auto music” experience is primarily the Android Auto 13.4 media-player redesign first reported in December 2024. It is a shared interface update for compatible audio apps—not a separate application, new streaming service, or guaranteed 2026 rollout. Album art now sits on the left, track information and progress appear beside it, and playback controls run across the lower part of the player. Availability still depends on your phone, app, car, display and Google’s staged rollout.
What changed in the Android Auto music player?
The redesign changes the arrangement of the now-playing screen more than its underlying playback functions. Coverage from 9to5Google and Gizchina identifies Android Auto 13.4 as the release associated with the change.

- Album artwork: Positioned on the left side of the player.
- Metadata and progress: Song title, artist, elapsed-time information and the seek bar sit beside the artwork in a tighter block.
- Playback controls: Buttons extend across the lower width of the player. Their arrangement changes, although familiar functions such as play, pause and track navigation remain.
- Typography and accents: The refreshed Android Auto font and broader Material You-style color accents appeared around the same release period; the accent-color reporting is documented by 9to5Google.
The exact proportions vary with the car display’s aspect ratio, resolution and DPI. A wide, high-resolution screen may show generous spacing, while a smaller or unusually shaped panel can make the same layout look compressed. The full media screen is the best place to judge the redesign; a compact dashboard widget may still use a reduced arrangement.

This is a common Android Auto media framework, not a Spotify-only skin. It does not automatically improve audio quality, add a new codec, or replace each service’s native app interface.

Which music and podcast apps use it?
The player is intended for audio applications that support Android Auto. Examples include Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Pandora and compatible podcast services. Google’s app guidance and media-playback guidance establish the important conditions:
- The app must support Android Auto and be installed on the phone.
- You should be signed in on the phone before connecting to the car.
- Some services require a paid or premium account for particular playback features.
- Developers decide which functions they expose. One app may offer queue or repeat controls that another does not, so the shared layout does not mean identical buttons.
Voice commands can start supported content without searching through menus. Google’s examples include “Play my playlist on Spotify,” “Play [song name] on Amazon Music,” “Play house music on Pandora,” and “Play [artist] on YouTube Music.”

How to get the redesigned player
- Open Google Play and install any available update for Android Auto.
- Update the music or podcast app you intend to use.
- Open that app on the phone and sign in; confirm that any required subscription is active.
- Connect the phone using the car’s supported wired or wireless Android Auto method.
- Open the Android Auto launcher on the vehicle screen and select the media app.
- Start playback, then open the full now-playing screen to inspect the layout.
- If the old arrangement remains, disconnect and reconnect Android Auto. If necessary, restart the phone and the vehicle’s infotainment system.
Android Auto is distributed through Google Play and staged server-side availability. A version number alone does not guarantee that every account, app or vehicle will display a particular interface immediately. Do not treat APK sideloading as the normal solution: unofficial packages can create compatibility, security and rollback problems.

If the new layout does not appear
Work through these checks in order. They separate a missing interface rollout from a basic connection or compatibility fault.

- Confirm compatibility. Verify that both the phone and vehicle or aftermarket receiver support Android Auto.
- Update both sides. Check Android Auto and the media app in Google Play; updating only Android Auto may leave the app component unchanged.
- Check the account. Sign in to the media service on the phone and confirm that its required plan or permissions are available.
- Test another compatible app. If Spotify works but one podcast app does not, the issue is probably app-specific rather than the shared player.
- Reconnect and restart. Unplug and reconnect the phone, then restart the phone and infotainment system.
- Check the correct screen. Look at the full now-playing view, not just the small dashboard card.
- For wired connections, change the cable. A known-good, data-capable USB cable can rule out a connection fault.
- Check vehicle firmware. The manufacturer may have an infotainment update that affects Android Auto rendering.
- Allow for staged delivery. Google may enable the interface by account or server-side flag after the app update.
- Escalate appropriately. Contact the media-app developer for an app-specific failure, as Google directs users in its app-support documentation.
Clearing Android Auto data is not an established fix for this redesign. It can remove settings and require setup again, so use it only when directed by official support for a separate problem.
Is the redesign better?

The redesign cannot repair weak mobile coverage, Bluetooth interference, bad cables, app crashes, volume or equalizer settings, vehicle firmware bugs or an unsupported phone. It also does not make every music service compatible.

What the 13.4 redesign does not include
- Local car-radio access: The anticipated “Car Media” capability was not live as part of this music-player update. Reports describing it as possible groundwork were discussing a separate future feature; see 9to5Google’s earlier report.
- Universal app support: Only Android Auto-compatible media apps can use the framework.
- Automatic sound improvements: The redesign changes presentation, not network quality, speakers or audio processing.
- Android Automotive: Android Auto projects a phone-based experience to a compatible display. Android Automotive is an operating system installed in the vehicle; features for one platform should not automatically be attributed to the other.
Using the player safely
- Prepare playlists, downloads and subscriptions before moving off.
- Prefer steering-wheel controls and voice commands while driving.
- Keep interactions brief and glanceable; have a passenger search or manage a queue when possible.
- Never use the phone in your hand while driving.
Google notes on its media help page that Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on most mobile devices, with the transition rolling out over time in 2026. Voice behavior can therefore vary as the change reaches your account and market.

What has changed since Android Auto 13.4?
Google’s later Android-in-cars announcements discuss Gemini, additional media-app improvements and Dolby Atmos support in selected apps and vehicles. These are separate, later developments—not features delivered by the original 13.4 redesign. Availability depends on the vehicle, app, market and rollout status. The current Android Auto overview is the appropriate place to check Google’s present compatibility information.

Bottom line for drivers
Update Android Auto and your media app, sign in, reconnect the phone and open the full now-playing screen. You are looking for left-side album art, metadata and a progress bar beside it, and a broad control row underneath. If that arrangement is absent, the most likely explanations are staged availability, display differences, an outdated media app or a compatibility issue—not necessarily an incompatible car or phone.
