Open Android Auto settings, choose Customize launcher, arrange the listed apps, then disconnect and reconnect Android Auto so the new order loads.
How to reorder Android Auto apps
Google documents this menu path: Settings → Connected devices → Connection preferences → Android Auto → Customize launcher. Phone makers and Android versions may use different labels, so searching Settings for Android Auto is usually the fastest route. Google’s launcher documentation is available at Android Auto app launcher.

- Open Settings on your Android phone.
- Search for Android Auto, or follow the documented connected-device path.
- Open the Android Auto settings page.
- Tap Customize launcher.
- Drag the listed apps into your preferred order.
- Leave Settings, disconnect the phone from the vehicle, and reconnect it. Google says the launcher changes appear after Android Auto is exited and restarted.
The procedure is the same for wired and wireless Android Auto because the launcher preference is stored in the phone’s Android Auto settings.
How to hide apps you do not use
Customize launcher also controls visibility. Use the control beside an app to hide it from the Android Auto launcher. Hiding an icon does not uninstall the app from your phone; it only removes that app from the launcher list until you enable it again.

What the launcher contains
The launcher is a vertically scrolling grid of apps that provide Android Auto-compatible experiences, including navigation, media and communication categories. Only items made available to Android Auto appear in this list. The number of icons visible at once depends on the vehicle display’s size and aspect ratio, so another car may show a different layout even with the same phone.

- Your most-used music or podcast app.
- Phone and messaging apps.
- A secondary navigation or media app.
- Occasional apps.
Navigation-first layout
Place Google Maps, Waze or another regularly used navigation app near the top. Keeping a second navigation app nearby can help when you routinely switch services, but launcher order does not change which app Android Auto chooses as a default or which app appears in a recent-app area.

Hide duplicate or rarely used apps to reduce scrolling. This makes the remaining choices easier to find, but restoring a hidden app requires returning to Customize launcher.

Voice-oriented layout
Keep phone and messaging apps available even if you normally use voice commands. Voice control can be affected by recognition, language, account, network and Assistant availability, so a visible fallback is useful. Reordering reduces searching and taps; it does not override local distracted-driving laws.
Why an app is missing
An app installed on the phone is not automatically an Android Auto app. Check these possibilities in order:

- Compatibility: The developer may not provide an Android Auto-compatible experience, so the app will not appear in the standard launcher.
- It is hidden: Open Customize launcher and enable it.
- Android Auto has not refreshed: Recently installed or updated apps may require you to reopen the app, exit Android Auto and reconnect.
- Category, region or account limits: Some apps expose Android Auto features only for particular regions, accounts or supported categories.
- Phone battery management: Samsung can temporarily disable unused apps, which can make them disappear from Android Auto while they remain on the phone.
Fix a missing app on Samsung phones

- Open the missing app on the phone; opening it can re-enable the app.
- Reconnect Android Auto and check the launcher.
- If it disappears again, open the phone’s battery settings.
- Turn off Auto disable unused apps or Put unused apps to sleep, depending on the Samsung software wording.
If you cannot find that setting, Samsung’s menu names may differ by model and software version; consult the device maker’s support information.

Launcher versus the recent-app or taskbar area

Google describes recent apps separately in its Android Auto interface guide. Do not assume that moving an icon in the launcher permanently pins it in the lower or side bar on every head unit.
What you cannot add or change normally
You cannot use Customize launcher to add an arbitrary phone app. The normal list contains only apps that support Android Auto or provide an approved compatible experience. Installation on the phone alone is not enough. Avoid relying on unofficial video, mirroring or sideloaded tools as a routine fix; they can introduce safety, privacy, policy and compatibility problems.
If “Customize launcher” is missing
- Search the phone’s Settings app for Android Auto.
- Open the phone’s Android Auto settings, not the vehicle’s infotainment settings.
- Disconnect and reconnect the vehicle.
- Restart the phone if the menu still does not appear.
- Check the manufacturer’s connected-device or Android Auto section when labels differ.
Google’s documented path is a general guide rather than a promise that every manufacturer uses the same hierarchy. The launcher page was last updated May 28, 2025, so exact labels and interface behavior can change with Android and vehicle software.
When a new order does not appear
Complete the edit, leave Settings, disconnect the phone, and turn the vehicle display off or restart the head unit if necessary. Reconnect the phone and open the launcher again. Google’s documented behavior requires exiting and restarting Android Auto before launcher changes are reflected.
