Short answer: Tesla made 2024 a target year for showing a purpose-built robotaxi and beginning limited factory use of its Optimus humanoid robot. The robotaxi unveiling moved from August 8 to October 10 and produced the Cybercab concept, which Tesla projected would cost under $30,000 and become available in 2026—not in 2024. Optimus commitments also shifted: Musk’s end-of-2024 limited-production promise became a 2025 target for more than 1,000, potentially several thousand, robots working in Tesla factories. Those announcements are forward-looking targets, not an audited record of completed 2024 deliveries.
The 2024 promises at a glance
| Program | Initial 2024 commitment | Revision during 2024 | Announced timing or price | What the announcement did not establish |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Purpose-built robotaxi | Tesla’s May 2024 investor presentation said a demonstration was expected during 2024. | The planned August 8 reveal moved to October 10 after design changes and additions to the event, according to TechCrunch’s July 23 report. | The October event introduced Cybercab, with a projected price below $30,000 and availability in 2026, according to the Associated Press. | A 2024 demonstration was not a customer launch, regulatory approval, or proof of unsupervised commercial service. |
| Optimus humanoid robot | On Tesla’s April 2024 first-quarter call, Elon Musk said limited-production units would be doing useful work inside a factory before the end of 2024. | At the June shareholder meeting and July second-quarter call, the target moved to more than 1,000 and possibly several thousand robots in Tesla factories during 2025. | At the October event, Musk estimated a future price of $28,000–$30,000 and described household tasks such as babysitting, mowing lawns and fetching groceries. | The displays and estimates did not demonstrate broad household deployment, customer sales or completed mass production. |
| Optimus production economics | No realized 2024 retail price was established. | Musk’s later outlook tied lower costs to much greater scale. | On the fourth-quarter outlook, he estimated production cost below $20,000 once annual output exceeded one million units. | That figure is a future scale projection, not a 2024 selling price or measured production cost. |
Robotaxi: from an August reveal to a 2026 Cybercab target
May presentation: a demonstration, not a launch
Tesla’s May 2024 investor presentation identified a purpose-built robotaxi demonstration as an event expected in 2024. The wording mattered: it set a date for showing the vehicle, not for delivering cars to customers or operating an approved autonomous taxi network.

April call: Musk points to August
On Tesla’s first-quarter earnings call in April, Musk said the robotaxi would be addressed around August. That statement created the widely reported August 8 schedule, but it still described an unveiling rather than a production or service deadline.

TechCrunch reported on July 23 that Tesla moved the reveal from August 8 to October 10. The report attributed the change to design changes and additions to the unveil. This was a schedule revision for the presentation itself; it did not announce a new customer-delivery date.

October event: Cybercab’s announced future
At the October 10 event, Tesla unveiled the Cybercab. The Associated Press reported Tesla’s projection of a price below $30,000 and availability in 2026. Those figures describe a planned vehicle and future availability, so Cybercab was not a 2024 consumer launch.
Optimus: the promise moved from 2024 factory use to 2025 scale
Q1 2024: limited useful work before year-end
On the April first-quarter call, Musk said: “We do think we will have Optimus in limited production in the factory, in the actual factory itself doing useful tasks before the end of this year.” This was the clearest end-of-2024 operating target: limited units, inside Tesla facilities, performing useful work. It was not a promise of general public availability.

June shareholder meeting: a larger 2025 internal fleet
At Tesla’s June 13 shareholder meeting, Musk said the company would move to limited Optimus production in 2025 and predicted “over 1,000, maybe a few thousand, Optimus robots working at Tesla.” The target therefore shifted the larger deployment milestone into the following year.

July Q2 call: “several thousand” by the end of 2025
On the July 23 second-quarter call, Musk said: “We expect to have several thousand Optimus robots produced and doing useful things by the end of next year in the Tesla factories,” adding that production would ramp in 2026. This was a stronger numerical target than the June wording but still concerned Tesla’s own factories, not outside customers.

October event: price estimates and household-task claims
At the Cybercab event, Musk estimated Optimus at $28,000–$30,000 and described possible tasks including babysitting, mowing lawns and fetching groceries. The Associated Press account presents these as claims about what the robot could eventually do, not evidence that such household services were commercially available in 2024.
What the $20,000 Optimus figure means
In Tesla’s fourth-quarter outlook, Musk estimated that Optimus production cost could fall below $20,000 once the program reached stable output above one million units per year. The condition is essential: the number depends on a future manufacturing scale and is a cost projection, not the October event’s estimated price and not a price paid by 2024 customers.

How to judge whether a Tesla promise was met
Several milestones are often collapsed into the single word “launch,” but they are different tests:
- Reveal or demonstration: Tesla shows a vehicle or robot and describes its intended capabilities.
- Prototype or limited production: Units are built in small numbers, potentially for internal testing or factory tasks.
- Useful operation: The machine performs repeatable work in a defined environment, with the level of human supervision specified.
- Regulatory approval: Authorities permit the relevant autonomous-driving or commercial operation in a particular jurisdiction.
- Customer availability: Buyers or paying operators can obtain the product under stated terms.
- Unsupervised service: A robotaxi carries passengers without the human oversight that may be required during testing.
The 2024 announcements clearly covered a scheduled robotaxi reveal, an unveiled Cybercab concept and stated Optimus production goals. They did not, on the record summarized here, provide one authoritative audited scorecard showing completion of every factory, autonomy, regulatory and customer milestone.

Musk’s broader Optimus claim
Musk told Axios in July 2024, “I think the long-term value of Optimus will exceed that of everything else at Tesla combined.” That is a statement about his long-term valuation thesis, not a 2024 revenue result or a demonstrated production outcome. It helps explain why Tesla repeatedly emphasized the robot even while its concrete internal-production deadlines moved into 2025 and 2026.
What changed, and what did not
- The robotaxi presentation date changed from August 8 to October 10; the event then produced the Cybercab announcement.
- The robotaxi’s announced consumer timing was 2026, so the 2024 commitment was a reveal rather than delivery.
- Optimus moved from an end-of-2024 limited factory-use expectation to a 2025 goal for more than 1,000 and possibly several thousand internal robots.
- The October Optimus price estimate and the sub-$20,000 cost projection refer to different concepts: an estimated future price versus a conditional future manufacturing cost.
- None of these targets, by themselves, establishes regulatory approval, unsupervised robotaxi operation or broad customer delivery.
Bottom line
Tesla did present the promised robotaxi-related vehicle in 2024, but later than first scheduled and with customer availability projected for 2026. Optimus remained a staged internal-production plan: Musk’s original end-of-2024 factory target was followed by larger 2025 deployment forecasts and a 2026 production ramp. The accurate reading of Tesla’s 2024 record is therefore a sequence of demonstrations and forward-looking milestones, not proof that robotaxis or household Optimus robots had launched at scale.
