There is no universal EFI fuel-pump priming sequence. Follow the service manual for the exact vehicle, engine, EFI system, and ECU revision. Some systems call for timed key cycles; others use an automatic prime or a model-specific pressure-tester procedure. The examples below show why their steps and limits should not be mixed.
When does an EFI system need priming?
Priming clears air from a fuel system when the manufacturer specifies it. For the Kohler EFI engines covered by its service manual, purging is required before the initial start and after the system has been disassembled or the fuel tank has run dry. Other vehicles may specify different triggers and procedures; check the manual for your exact application.
Do not assume that every pump needs a special priming routine before an ordinary start. The relevant question is what the manufacturer requires after the work or condition that has affected the fuel system.
Why the sequence depends on the EFI system
Key-on duration, cycle count, and available priming methods vary. Even within the Kohler instructions, the sequence depends on ECU part number. A 2020 Polaris RZR Pro XP manual excerpt gives a different procedure for a specific situation: a completely drained fuel system. These are examples for their respective systems, not interchangeable recipes.

| System and situation | Procedure described by the source | Limit or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Kohler EFI, ECU part number 24 584 28 or higher | Switch to ON/RUN and wait for the pump to cycle on and off; priming is complete when cycling stops. | Approximately one minute, according to the Kohler manual. The manual’s year is not confirmed in the available citation. Kohler EFI service manual |
| Kohler EFI, older plastic-cased ECU below 24 584 28-S | Switch to ON/RUN, let the roughly three-second pump run stop, switch off and on again, and repeat until the pump has cycled five times. | This sequence is for the specified older ECU system, not a general EFI instruction. The manual’s year is not confirmed in the available citation. Kohler EFI service manual |
| 2020 Polaris RZR Pro XP, fuel system completely drained | Cycle the key from OFF to ON twice, allowing approximately five seconds at each ON cycle for the pump to cycle and shut down. | Confirm the procedure in the service-manual revision for the exact vehicle. Polaris owner manuals |
Kohler states: “Important: The EFI fuel system must be purged of air (primed) prior to initial start up, and/or any time the system has been disassembled or the fuel tank run dry.” Kohler EFI service manual
How to choose the right procedure
- Identify the application. Find the make, model, year, engine, EFI configuration, and ECU details where applicable.
- Check why priming is needed. Initial installation, an opened system, an empty tank, or pump or filter service may be treated differently in the manual.
- Use the exact manual’s steps. Check whether it specifies key-on priming, repeated cycles, scan-tool activation, a manual pump, or a test-valve procedure—and follow its timing and limits.
- Match any required equipment. If the manual calls for a pressure tester, verify the gauge, rail adapter, and relief hose are suitable for that system.
EFI configuration can affect prime behavior and settings. A Holley EFI forum discussion, for example, describes different prime behavior for MPFI and TBI systems and configurable fuel-prime parameters. Treat that as a reminder to consult the applicable manufacturer instructions and calibration documentation, not as a procedure for another vehicle. Holley EFI forum

Model-specific pressure-tester purge: the Kohler example
The cited Kohler manual also describes a purge using a pressure gauge/tester connected to a rail test valve. The procedure calls for holding the tester’s release button and cranking until air is purged and fuel appears in the discharge tube. It requires the specified tester and compatible adapters; it is not a generic method for other EFI systems. Kohler EFI service manual
For this Kohler tester procedure, stop cranking if fuel is not visible after 10 seconds, then let the starter cool for 60 seconds before further use. Those limits apply to this procedure only.

- Application: This fuel pump is designed to fit 12V DC EFI systems only.
- Test flow:255LPH (43PSI), 190LPH (80PSI), Operating Pressure: 15-90 PSI, final fuel pressure set by regulator.
- Applicable fuel: gasoline only. Designed for stable and efficient fuel delivery. High-impurity fuel may reduce pump lifespan and affect overall performance.
- Note: The diameter of 255LPH high-flow intank electric fuel pump may be different from the original model, but it will not affect the use. Hoses, filters or other equipment may need to be replaced. Professional installation is highly recommended.
What to do if priming does not work
- Do not keep repeating key cycles or cranking beyond the limits in the exact manual.
- Do not loosen a fuel line or high-pressure connection as a generic way to bleed an EFI system. Use only a manufacturer-described method and compatible equipment.
- If the pump does not run or the prescribed procedure fails, stop and use model-specific diagnostics for fuel pressure, power supply, relays, wiring, and fault codes.
- The Polaris excerpt says to diagnose the problem if the vehicle does not start after five seconds of cranking. That limit belongs to its stated procedure, not every vehicle. Polaris owner manuals
What information to have before looking up instructions
Use the service manual for the exact vehicle and, where relevant, engine and ECU revision. If you need help finding the correct procedure, gather the make, model, year, engine, what work was done or what condition prompted priming, and any ECU or EFI-system identification. A fuel-pressure tester is useful only when the applicable manual calls for one and the correct adapter is available.
