What Canoo’s mandatory unpaid break meant
According to EV’s December 22, 2024 report, which reproduced a December 20 employee email, Canoo instructed the remaining staff to take an unpaid break beginning Monday, December 23. The email described the expected duration as “a few weeks.”
The email said affected workers would remain employees and that their currently elected 2024 benefits would continue through December. It also prohibited them from working during the break and said their access to Canoo’s systems would be suspended. Canoo’s message included the line, “Please take this time to have a restful and enjoyable holiday season with your family.”
EV reported no headcount for the employees covered by this break. It should not be confused with the separately announced group of 82 furloughed workers.

The October figures come from Canoo’s Form 10-Q. The December 18 furlough count and factory idling were announced by Canoo in a company release. These accounts describe different dates and worker groups; the 23% figure and 12-week period apply to the October factory furlough, not the December actions.
Why Canoo said it furloughed workers
In its December 18 announcement, Canoo said the furloughs and factory idling were intended to give it time to finalize capital needed for operations. The company also said it was in advanced discussions with capital sources. That was Canoo’s description of its discussions, not confirmation that financing had been secured.

The release said, “We regret having to furlough our employees, especially during the holidays, but we have no choice at this point. We are hopeful that we will be able to bring them back to work soon.” This described the company’s hope at the time; it did not establish that furloughed staff returned.

Canoo filed for Chapter 7 liquidation on January 17, 2025. Its Form 8-K says the company and certain subsidiaries filed in Delaware, with a trustee to take control and liquidate the debtors’ assets. The filing followed the December unpaid break; Canoo did not resume operations after a short pause as the email had anticipated.

The filing establishes the liquidation process, but it does not establish whether individual employees later recovered unpaid wages, benefits, or other claims.
