Usually, no. Premium gasoline does not provide a universal fuel-economy advantage in a sports sedan. Use the grade specified for your exact engine, model year and configuration: premium fuel is mandatory when the owner’s manual says “required,” while a “recommended” label allows a conditional benefit that may appear mainly during hard acceleration or other high-load driving. If the manual specifies regular, higher octane alone is not a demonstrated way to increase mileage.
Premium has a higher octane rating, not automatically more energy. In AAA testing, vehicles designed for regular gasoline showed no significant difference in fuel economy, horsepower or tailpipe emissions when run on premium. In a separate 2017 test of vehicles that recommended but did not require premium, fuel economy improved by an average of 2.7% under simulated severe conditions, but the gain did not cover premium’s higher price in AAA’s analysis.

Start with the owner’s manual, not the car’s styling
“Sports sedan” describes a body style and driving mission, not a single fuel requirement. Two cars that look similarly performance-oriented can use different engines, compression ratios, calibration strategies and fuel instructions. Even within one model line, the required grade can change by engine, drivetrain, market or model year.

| Manual wording | What it means | Fuel-economy decision |
|---|---|---|
| Premium required | The engine is certified to operate as intended on the specified premium grade. | Use premium. Choosing regular to save money ignores the manufacturer’s requirement. |
| Premium recommended | Premium is the preferred fuel, but the vehicle can operate on regular under the manufacturer’s stated conditions. | Premium may provide a modest benefit in demanding operation; measure your own cost per mile. |
| Regular specified | The vehicle is designed and calibrated for regular gasoline. | Higher octane is not a proven mileage upgrade. |
Do not infer the answer from a turbo badge, a high horsepower number, a performance trim or a premium brand image. The manual’s exact language is the controlling evidence for your car.
What octane does—and does not—tell you
Premium means higher octane, which is a fuel specification related to resistance to abnormal combustion. It is not a general quality score and does not mean the gasoline contains more usable energy per gallon. A higher number on the pump therefore cannot be treated as an automatic miles-per-gallon bonus.
For a car designed for regular, AAA reported no significant improvement in fuel economy, horsepower or tailpipe emissions when comparing regular with premium. Paying for the higher grade in that situation changes the price of the fuel without establishing a corresponding efficiency benefit.

What the AAA tests actually found
Vehicles that recommended but did not require premium
AAA’s 2017 testing examined vehicles whose manufacturers recommended premium but did not require it. Under simulated demanding conditions—including aggressive acceleration, hauling or towing—the group averaged a 2.7% improvement in fuel economy on premium. Individual test-vehicle averages ranged from a 1% decrease to a 7.1% improvement.
The same group averaged a 1.4% horsepower increase, with individual results ranging from a 0.3% decrease to a 3.2% increase. That is a performance result, not a promise of a matching MPG gain. AAA said the average fuel-economy improvement did not offset premium’s added price in its analysis.

Typical city and highway driving produced less benefit than the severe-condition testing. The results therefore support a conditional conclusion: a recommended-but-not-required vehicle may respond to premium when the engine is heavily loaded, but ordinary commuting is not guaranteed to improve.
Vehicles designed for regular gasoline
AAA’s separate testing found no significant difference in horsepower, fuel economy or tailpipe emissions for cars designed to run on regular gasoline. That finding is the clearest answer for a sports sedan whose manual specifies regular: premium is not an established economy strategy.
Why a fleet average cannot predict your sedan
The 2.7% figure is an average for a test group, not a specification for every model. The spread from a 1% decrease to a 7.1% increase demonstrates vehicle-to-vehicle variation. Results can also change with model year, engine, transmission, route, weather, load, tire condition and driving style. Treat the AAA result as evidence that a benefit is possible under certain conditions—not as a guaranteed percentage for your car.
How to decide when premium is optional
- Record the manual’s wording. Write down whether it says required, recommended or regular. If the manual gives a minimum octane number, use that number for your market.
- Check the actual local price gap. Compare the per-gallon price of regular and premium at the stations you normally use. Prices vary by location and date, so a national assumption cannot settle your cost.
- Separate normal and demanding driving. Note whether your use is mostly steady commuting or includes repeated hard acceleration, mountain grades, towing or heavy loads. AAA’s largest observed effects came from simulated severe operation.
- Measure one vehicle on comparable routes. Use the same sedan, similar traffic and weather, and a consistent fill-up method. Compare several tanks on regular with several on premium rather than relying on one trip or the dashboard estimate.
- Convert MPG to cost per mile. Divide the fuel price per gallon by the observed miles per gallon. The lower number is the cheaper fuel choice for your actual conditions.
For a recommended fuel, premium is financially worthwhile only when its MPG improvement is large enough to overcome its higher per-gallon price. AAA found that its tested average did not reach that threshold, but it did not establish one universal break-even price for every sedan or location.
The cost-per-mile calculation
Use this simple comparison:
cost per mile = price per gallon ÷ observed miles per gallon
For example, suppose a driver records a regular price and MPG, then records premium price and MPG on comparable routes. Insert those measured values into the formula for each grade. Do not compare premium’s price with the regular-fuel MPG, or premium’s MPG with a different season or route; both numbers in each calculation must belong to the same fuel and comparable operating conditions.

You can also calculate the minimum MPG needed for premium to break even:
break-even premium MPG = premium price per gallon ÷ regular cost per mile
If your measured premium MPG is below that result, premium costs more per mile. If it is above, the fuel-economy gain covers the price difference. This is a decision tool, not a claim that your sedan will achieve a particular gain.

A required-p Premium instruction is not an invitation to run a personal price experiment with regular. Follow the manufacturer’s requirement, even if regular is substantially cheaper. The requirement applies to the exact engine and configuration identified in the manual; do not substitute advice from a different trim, a forum post or another model.
If you accidentally fill with the wrong grade, consult the manual for the manufacturer’s guidance and return to the specified fuel at the next opportunity. Do not deliberately repeat the experiment to estimate MPG: a required-fuel specification takes priority over a short-term fuel-cost comparison.
When premium is recommended but not required
This is the only category in which AAA’s controlled 2017 test found a measurable average economy gain. AAA’s 2.7% average came from severe simulated conditions, and individual vehicles varied widely. In normal city and highway use, the benefit was smaller.

Drivers in this category have three reasonable choices:
- Use premium all the time if the potential response, smoother performance or extra margin under heavy load matters more than the added fuel cost.
- Use regular for ordinary driving and premium for sustained high-load or aggressive operation, but only if the manual permits regular and does not impose additional restrictions.
- Run a controlled personal comparison using the cost-per-mile method above. This is the only way to learn whether your routes and driving produce a worthwhile result.
Do not assume that a small MPG increase means lower spending. A 2.7% improvement, for example, is modest; whether it pays back depends entirely on the local price difference and your measured baseline.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much of the vehicle market requires or recommends premium?
The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2024 summary of DOE/EPA Fuel Economy Guide data, accessed May 15, 2024, reported that 26.7% of model-year 2023 light-duty vehicle models required premium and 26.3% recommended it. These are percentages of vehicle model records or configurations, not the share of cars on the road. They also are not sports-sedan-specific statistics.
The figures explain why checking the manual matters: premium guidance is common enough that a generic “sports car” rule is unreliable, while regular-fuel designs remain widespread.
Common mistakes that produce misleading MPG comparisons
Comparing different driving conditions
A premium tank used for an empty highway trip cannot be fairly compared with a regular tank used in stop-and-go traffic. Traffic, temperature, speed, payload and tire pressure can overwhelm a small fuel-grade effect.

Using the dashboard estimate as proof
Trip-computer estimates are useful for spotting a pattern but can hide rounding and reset differences. Pump-based gallons and miles over multiple comparable tanks provide a stronger personal comparison.

Expecting premium to clean or upgrade the engine
Higher octane does not establish better fuel economy for a regular-designed vehicle. The evidence here supports a fuel-grade decision, not claims that premium gasoline repairs deposits, increases engine longevity or substitutes for maintenance.
Applying one sedan’s result to another
Even within a single brand, engine and model-year changes can alter fuel instructions. A result from one AAA test vehicle cannot be transferred to a different sedan without checking that car’s manual and measuring its own operation.
Looking only at MPG
Fuel price and MPG must be considered together. Premium can show a higher MPG number and still produce a higher cost per mile when the price premium is larger than the efficiency gain.
A practical decision checklist
- Have you checked the exact owner’s manual for the engine and model year?
- Does it say premium required, premium recommended or regular?
- Are you comparing the actual local prices at your usual stations?
- Is your driving mostly ordinary commuting or high-load operation?
- Are your MPG measurements based on comparable routes and multiple tanks?
- Have you calculated cost per mile rather than comparing MPG alone?
- Are you treating AAA’s 2017 fleet results as context rather than a guarantee?
What the evidence can—and cannot—answer
The evidence supports a manual-first rule and rejects the idea that premium universally improves economy. It supports a modest, condition-dependent possibility for vehicles that recommend—but do not require—premium, especially under severe operation. It does not provide a current MPG percentage for every sports sedan, a universal break-even price, current local gasoline prices or a model-specific recommendation without the exact vehicle and location.
For a current purchase or ownership decision, the practical inputs are your sedan’s official fuel instruction, the prices at your stations and measured fuel use on your normal routes. Those inputs matter more than the body style or the word “premium” on the pump.
