Yes, but only as a starting signal. A brand badge can reflect patterns in dependability, maintenance spending and buyer demand, yet it cannot tell you whether a particular model year, engine, transmission or used example will be trouble-free. The useful approach is to treat the badge as a prior, then verify the exact vehicle’s reliability record, depreciation outlook and total cost of ownership.
Brand reputation is most valuable when you are screening a long list of cars. It becomes a poor substitute for vehicle-specific evidence once you have narrowed the choice to two or three models.

What a badge can—and cannot—tell you
A badge summarizes the decisions a manufacturer makes across many vehicles: powertrain design, software, parts quality, dealer support, warranty policy and production controls. Those choices can create recognizable brand-level patterns. Owners of one marque may report fewer defects, lower routine-service bills or stronger used-car demand than owners of another.
Those patterns are averages, not guarantees. A brand can sell a highly dependable compact alongside an expensive-to-repair luxury SUV. A mid-cycle update can fix an earlier model’s weakness, while a new engine or transmission can introduce problems that the badge’s reputation does not predict. Trim, drivetrain, mileage, climate, maintenance history and prior damage can overwhelm any brand effect on an individual car.

- Use the badge to narrow the field. It can identify brands worth investigating for dependable ownership or strong resale.
- Use model- and year-specific evidence to choose. Reliability surveys and service records should be tied to the exact generation and powertrain.
- Use a full cost calculation before paying a premium. Depreciation, insurance, fuel, taxes and repairs can reverse a badge-based assumption.
Reliability: brand rankings are a screening tool
The most useful current brand-level evidence comes from large owner surveys, but you must read the sample and measurement carefully. J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study surveyed 33,268 original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. Fieldwork ran from December 2024 through November 2025 and covered 184 problem areas in nine categories.
| Measure | What it means | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) | Reported problems normalized to 100 vehicles; the study says a lower score indicates higher vehicle quality. | Compare brands and models within the same study, but do not treat a score as a probability that your car will fail. |
| Industry average | 204 PP100 in the 2026 U.S. study. | Provides context for that survey cohort, not a lifetime benchmark for every model year. |
| Brand results | Lexus ranked highest among premium brands and Buick highest among mass-market brands in this study. | Use the result as dated evidence for 2023 vehicles, not as a permanent brand hierarchy. |
Survey results describe what owners reported, including defects, software issues and usability complaints. They do not predict the exact repairs your car will need, and they may not match a vehicle built in a different year or plant. A brand’s position can also change as its product mix changes.
Why model year and powertrain matter more
When comparing cars, identify the engine, transmission, hybrid system and drivetrain—not just the logo. Search for reliability results for that exact generation and note whether the data covers the same production years. A proven engine in a familiar platform may be a safer bet than a newly launched model from a highly rated brand.

Power’s ratings methodology calculates verified-owner ratings relative to vehicles in the same category or peer group. Its overall rating weights quality and reliability at 40%, driving experience at 20%, resale value at 20% and dealership experience at 20%. That weighting means an overall score is not a pure reliability ranking.
Be cautious with all-new and redesigned vehicles
First-year all-new models may not have enough survey responses for a stable estimate. J.D. Power advises caution with redesigned vehicles because early production can carry different parts, software and calibration from the outgoing model. If a car is new, look for evidence from related models and the manufacturer’s previous generation, then budget a larger contingency for unknowns.

Consumer Reports makes a similar qualification in its reliability FAQ: predictions for a brand-new, redesigned or data-poor model may draw on the manufacturer’s track record, the prior generation or related vehicles. Its surveys are voluntary, so response bias is possible. Treat any forecast as an estimate rather than a guarantee.
Resale value: a strong badge can help, but it does not set the price
Brand desirability influences how quickly a used car attracts buyers and how much supply reaches the market. That can support residual value, but the badge is only one input. The vehicle’s condition, mileage, equipment, transaction price and local supply often matter more at the time you sell.

Power describes residual value as an estimated end-of-lease value and a useful indicator of long-term resale and affordability. Its 2026 U.S. ALG Residual Value Awards evaluated 300 models and recognized vehicles projected to retain the highest share of manufacturer suggested retail price at open auction after three years.
| Residual-value factor | Why it changes your eventual sale price |
|---|---|
| Mileage and condition | High miles, accident history, worn interiors or missing service records reduce what buyers will pay, regardless of badge. |
| Features and pricing | Popular safety, comfort and powertrain options can support demand; a high original transaction price can increase dollar depreciation even when the percentage retained is good. |
| Used-vehicle supply | Scarcity can lift prices, while a large number of lease returns or fleet vehicles can pressure them. |
| Vehicle execution | Reliability reputation, design, fuel economy and owner satisfaction affect demand for the specific model. |
| Seasonality and macroeconomics | Interest rates, fuel prices, tax rules and the time of year influence wholesale and retail pricing. |

Ownership costs: maintenance is only one line item
Consumer Reports’ analysis of its 2025 Annual Auto Surveys, updated December 4, 2025, asked members what they paid out of pocket for maintenance and repairs during the preceding 12 months. It excludes collision repairs and does not account for uncertainty from inflation or tariffs. The analysis finds that brand averages can differ by thousands of dollars over a ten-year period, and costs generally rise as vehicles age.
“The difference to maintain a car, on average, between some brands can be thousands of dollars over a 10-year time frame,” says Steven Elek, who oversees auto data analytics at Consumer Reports.
That finding supports checking the badge when two otherwise similar cars have very different service histories or parts costs. It does not mean every owner will spend the brand average. A car covered by free scheduled maintenance or a long warranty can have low early out-of-pocket costs while still becoming expensive after coverage ends.

| Cost category | What to collect for your vehicle |
|---|---|
| Depreciation | Expected sale or trade-in value at your ownership horizon, adjusted for mileage, condition and incentives. |
| Fuel or energy | Your annual miles, local fuel or electricity prices and the vehicle’s real-world efficiency estimate. |
| Insurance | Quotes for your address, driver profile, coverage limits and deductible; two vehicles with similar prices can have very different premiums. |
| Scheduled maintenance | Factory service intervals, fluid changes, tires, brakes and inspection fees. |
| Repairs | Warranty coverage, common age-related failures, labor rates and parts availability in your area. |
| Taxes and fees | Registration, inspection, local property taxes where applicable and financing charges. |
Luxury status is not a reliable shortcut for either dependability or expense. A premium badge may bring better materials or service amenities, but specialized parts, larger wheels, complex electronics and higher insurance can raise ownership costs. Evaluate the actual equipment and warranty rather than assuming the category decides the outcome.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare two specific cars
Use the following process when a badge is influencing a purchase decision.
- Define the ownership period. Choose the number of years and annual miles you expect. Resale and age-related repairs cannot be judged without this horizon.
- Match the vehicles precisely. Record model year, generation, engine, transmission, drivetrain, body style, trim and major options. Do not compare a hybrid with a gasoline model or a base trim with a performance version without adjusting the costs.
- Check reliability evidence. Look for survey results and technical-service information covering that model year. Identify recurring problems, recall completion and whether the vehicle is first-year or recently redesigned.
- Inspect the individual car. Obtain maintenance records, run a title and accident-history check, verify open recalls and pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection. A well-documented high-mileage car can be a better risk than an neglected low-mileage example.
- Estimate depreciation. Use current listings and valuation data for the same trim, then adjust for your projected mileage, condition, color, equipment and local demand. Keep forecast values separate from guaranteed proceeds.
- Price operating costs. Get insurance quotes before purchase, calculate fuel or energy use, and obtain a written estimate for scheduled service. Ask an independent shop about parts availability and likely repairs after the warranty expires.
- Compare the net result. Add purchase price, financing, fuel, insurance, maintenance, repairs and fees, then subtract the expected sale value. A modestly cheaper badge is not a bargain if depreciation or repairs erase the difference.
When a badge premium is worth considering
Paying more for a brand reputation can be rational when several conditions line up:
- The exact model and powertrain have a strong, multi-year reliability record.
- Independent service is readily available and parts prices are reasonable where you live.
- Comparable vehicles show stronger demand and lower projected depreciation after adjusting for your purchase discount.
- The warranty meaningfully covers the systems most likely to be expensive, and you can afford the vehicle after insurance and routine service.
Walk away from a badge premium when the advantage exists only in a broad ranking, the vehicle is a first-year redesign, the seller cannot document maintenance, or insurance and parts quotes eliminate the apparent savings. A lower purchase price with a larger repair reserve can be the more honest comparison than a higher price justified by reputation alone.

Confusing predicted residual value with your sale price
Residual awards are forecasts under stated assumptions. Your mileage, condition, local supply and selling channel determine the actual offer.
Looking only at repair bills
A car with low maintenance spending can still cost more overall through depreciation, fuel, insurance or fees. Use the full cost framework.
Ignoring coverage and service incentives
Free maintenance and warranty repairs can suppress early bills without changing long-term mechanical risk. Compare the period after those benefits expire.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Brand reputation cannot reveal flood damage, deferred service, worn tires, accident repairs or a neglected transmission. Inspect the specific vehicle.
A practical decision rule
Choose the car with the strongest vehicle-specific evidence and the lowest credible total cost—not automatically the car with the most prestigious badge. Use brand data to set your questions, then let model-year reliability, documented condition, depreciation assumptions, insurance quotes and realistic repair budgets make the decision.
