Dodge Charger Hellcat FAQ (2023 Specs): Supercharger, Fuel, Reliability and Maintenance

A model-year-specific guide to Charger Hellcat power, supercharger basics, premium fuel, 0W-40 oil, maintenance scheduling and how to assess reliability on a used example.

Short answer: A Dodge Charger Hellcat uses a supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V-8. In Dodge’s 2023 U.S. Charger SRT specification, the standard Hellcat is rated at 717 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque, requires premium 91-octane fuel, and is filled with 0W-40 Pennzoil Ultra synthetic oil. The Redeye Jailbreak is a separate, higher-output configuration rated at 807 horsepower and 707 lb-ft.

Those figures and service details are year-, market- and trim-specific. Treat “Hellcat” as a family of Chargers rather than one unchanging specification: confirm the exact vehicle identification, owner’s manual and maintenance schedule before buying parts, choosing fuel or setting service intervals.

What engine is in a Dodge Charger Hellcat?

The Charger Hellcat engine is a supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V-8. A supercharger is mechanically driven forced induction: the engine turns a compressor that packs more air into the cylinders, allowing more fuel to be burned and producing substantially more power than a naturally aspirated engine of similar displacement.

Dodge’s 2023 U.S. Charger SRT specifications list the Hellcat configuration at 717 hp at 6,100 rpm and 650 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 rpm. Those numbers belong to the 2023 Hellcat specification and should not automatically be applied to every earlier Charger, export-market car or special edition.

The supercharger is integrated into a high-output engine system that also includes its own intake, cooling, fuel and calibration requirements. The official material identifies the engine as supercharged but does not establish a universal owner-service interval for supercharger fluid or a complete supercharger-maintenance procedure. Do not invent a fluid interval from a generic Hellcat discussion; use the schedule for the exact vehicle and ask a qualified technician about any service not covered in the manual.

Hellcat versus Redeye: do not mix the outputs

“Hellcat” and “Redeye” are related but distinct configurations. Dodge’s 2023 performance information advertises the Charger SRT Redeye Jailbreak at 807 hp and 707 lb-ft. That is not the output of the standard 2023 Hellcat entry.

Configuration Published output How to use the figure
2023 Charger SRT Hellcat (U.S.) 717 hp at 6,100 rpm; 650 lb-ft at 4,800 rpm Applies to the Hellcat configuration in Dodge’s 2023 U.S. specification.
2023 Charger SRT Redeye Jailbreak 807 hp; 707 lb-ft Separate Redeye Jailbreak configuration; do not quote it as a standard Hellcat rating.

When comparing two cars, record the model year, exact trim and any factory package before comparing horsepower. A badge alone is not enough to identify the calibration, equipment or service requirements.

What fuel does a Charger Hellcat require?

For the 2023 U.S. Charger SRT specification, Dodge states: “Premium 91 octane (R+M)/2 — required.” Octane is a fuel’s resistance to knock, and R+M/2 is the rating method printed on U.S. pump labels.

Use the fuel grade specified for the car rather than treating regular gasoline as an acceptable cost-saving substitute. A different model year or market can have different labeling or instructions, so check that vehicle’s fuel section before filling it. If you are inspecting a used car, verify that the seller has been using the required grade and keep receipts when practical; fuel history cannot prove engine condition, but it can reveal whether the owner understood the car’s requirements.

What oil does a Charger Hellcat take?

Dodge’s 2023 U.S. Charger SRT specification lists 0W-40 Pennzoil Ultra synthetic as the factory oil fill for the supercharged Hellcat. The important part is not merely the viscosity printed on a bottle: the oil must meet the manufacturer’s specification for that engine and model year.

  • Use the correct filter and sealing parts for the exact engine application.

The manual advises using manufacturer-recommended fluids and obtaining qualified help for work beyond your knowledge or equipment. Avoid high-pressure washing of the engine compartment; the guidance specifically says it is not recommended.

How often should you change the oil?

The correct interval is the one in your model-year maintenance schedule and owner’s manual, together with the vehicle’s operating conditions and oil-life system. Mopar publishes a 2023 Charger maintenance schedule that includes mileage-based inspections and replacement items such as the engine air cleaner, cabin air filter and spark plugs.

A 2016 Charger SRT User’s Guide sets a maximum oil interval of 6,000 miles (10,000 km) or six months, whichever comes first, and notes that extended off-road or track use may require more frequent changes. That is a 2016 instruction, not a universal rule for every Hellcat. Applying it to a newer car without checking the newer manual can produce the wrong interval.

Why use the schedule instead of a single internet interval?

Hellcat cars differ by year, engine calibration, market, mileage and use. A car driven on track, in repeated short trips, in extreme heat or while heavily modified can place different demands on oil than a lightly used, stock commuter. The schedule is also where inspection items and one-time replacements are identified. If the oil-life monitor, manual and a shop sticker disagree, resolve the discrepancy by checking the manufacturer’s schedule for the vehicle identification and asking the servicing dealer or a technician familiar with the platform.

What maintenance does a Charger Hellcat need?

Routine care is broader than oil changes. Follow the exact schedule for inspections and replacement items, and keep documentation so the next owner can see what was done.

At every service visit

  • Confirm the mileage and date against the model-year schedule.
  • Inspect engine oil level and look for leaks around the engine, filter and drain plug.
  • Check coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid and other reservoirs against the manual’s procedures and specifications.
  • Inspect belts, hoses, tires, brakes, steering and suspension components.
  • Scan for warning lights or stored diagnostic codes when symptoms are present.

Air filters, cabin filter and spark plugs

The 2023 Charger schedule includes the engine air cleaner, cabin air filter and spark plugs as mileage-based service items. Exact intervals depend on configuration and schedule revision, so use the published schedule for the vehicle rather than assuming a universal mileage. Restricted air flow, a dirty cabin filter or worn plugs can affect drivability, but replacing parts early should be based on inspection and the specified interval.

Track or severe use

Repeated track sessions and other severe conditions can justify shorter oil and inspection intervals. The historical 2016 guidance explicitly warns that extended off-road or track use may call for more frequent oil changes. For a newer car, obtain the severe-use direction from its own manual; do not copy a 2016 interval without that confirmation.

Can you change the oil yourself?

A competent DIY owner can perform an oil change if the vehicle can be lifted safely and the required tools, oil, filter and disposal method are available. The manual’s fluid specification and the exact quantity for your engine control the job; this article does not substitute a service manual for fill volume or tightening torque.

  1. Identify the exact model year, engine and market, then verify the oil and filter specification in the owner’s manual.
  2. Warm the engine as directed by the manual, park on a level surface and secure the car with equipment rated for its weight. Never rely on a jack alone.
  3. Drain the oil into a suitable container, replace the filter and sealing washer or gasket as specified, and inspect the old oil for unusual metal or coolant contamination.
  4. Refill with the specified 0W-40 synthetic product for the applicable vehicle, initially adding less than the final capacity if the manual directs that approach.
  5. Run the engine briefly, check for leaks, shut it off, allow the oil to settle and verify the level on the correct dipstick procedure.
  6. Reset the oil-life monitor only after the service is complete, record the mileage and dispose of used oil through an approved collection point.

Stop and obtain professional help if the drain plug, filter housing, lifting points or oil-level reading is uncertain. An incorrectly supported car or damaged sealing surface can create a greater risk than the service itself.

How reliable is a Dodge Charger Hellcat?

There is no credible quantified reliability rate, defect rate or controlled long-term comparison established by the manufacturer specifications and maintenance documents cited for this guide. Owner anecdotes can describe individual experiences, but they are not population-level statistics.

The most defensible answer is conditional: a Hellcat’s likely ownership experience depends heavily on the specific car’s service history, modifications, tune, operating conditions and present condition. High output does not by itself prove that every example is unreliable, and a clean-looking car does not prove that it has been maintained correctly.

Factors that materially change risk

  • Service history: Missing oil-change records, unexplained gaps or repeated overdue maintenance reduce confidence.
  • Modifications and tuning: Non-factory calibrations, pulley changes, intake or exhaust work can alter stresses and complicate diagnosis. Ask what was installed, who tuned it and whether original parts remain.
  • Use: Drag launches, track sessions, long periods of storage and frequent short trips create different inspection needs.
  • Condition: Cooling-system leaks, warning lights, uneven tire wear, brake vibration, smoke or unusual supercharger and engine noises deserve professional evaluation.
  • Recall status: Recall campaigns are VIN-specific. Check the VIN with the manufacturer or an authorized dealer rather than assuming a model-year list applies to the individual car.

  1. Write down the VIN, model year, exact trim and drivetrain before researching parts or specifications.
  2. Request service invoices, inspection reports and records of oil, filters, plugs, brakes, tires and cooling-system work.
  3. Ask directly about engine, transmission or supercharger modifications, software tuning, track use, drag racing and accidents.
  4. Check that the engine starts from cold without excessive smoke, persistent warning lights or unexplained rattles. A warm engine at arrival can conceal cold-start behavior.
  5. During a road test, watch for misfires, hesitation, abnormal vibration, overheating indications, brake pulsation and transmission faults.
  6. Have a technician familiar with the Charger platform inspect the underside, suspension, brakes, cooling system, driveline and signs of fluid leaks.
  7. Verify open recalls and campaign work by VIN, then compare the inspection findings with the seller’s records.

Pay particular attention to cars with extensive modifications and no original parts or tuning documentation. Modification is not proof of failure, but undocumented changes make the car’s present calibration and maintenance history harder to establish.

Common ownership questions answered

Does every Charger Hellcat make 717 horsepower?

No. The 717-hp figure is for the Hellcat configuration in Dodge’s 2023 U.S. specification. The 2023 Redeye Jailbreak is listed separately at 807 hp and 707 lb-ft.

Is 91 octane mandatory?

It is required for the cited 2023 U.S. Charger SRT specification. Confirm the fuel instruction for any other year or market in that car’s manual.

Is 0W-40 always correct?

The 2023 U.S. specification lists 0W-40 Pennzoil Ultra synthetic. Verify the exact manufacturer specification for your model year before buying oil.

Can I use the 2016 six-month oil rule on a newer Hellcat?

Not automatically. The 6,000-mile or six-month maximum belongs to the 2016 Charger SRT guide. A newer vehicle’s own maintenance schedule controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there a published Hellcat failure-rate percentage?

Not in the manufacturer specifications and maintenance guidance used here. Judge an individual car through records, inspection, VIN-specific recall checks and evidence of how it was operated.

Practical ownership verdict

A Charger Hellcat rewards precise ownership: premium fuel, the specified synthetic oil, schedule-based service and careful inspection of modifications and operating history. Keep the standard Hellcat and Redeye figures separate, treat all intervals as model-year-specific and use qualified help when a job exceeds your tools or experience. That approach answers the questions the badge cannot: what this particular car requires, how it has been treated and whether its condition supports the price and performance.
