Dodge Charger and Challenger’s Hemi Era Ended in 2023—But the Hemi Didn’t

Dodge’s 2023 Hemi send-off applied to the Charger and Challenger in their then-current forms—not every Hemi-powered vehicle. The Durango continued into 2025, and Ram announced a 2026 Ram 1500 Hemi return for Europe.

The Dodge Charger and Challenger in their then-current Hemi-powered forms were slated to end after 2023. That is the strongest supported reading of the headline: Dodge’s June 2023 announcement paired the two cars in its “Last Call” send-off, and its Demon 170 release said their current Hemi forms would end at year’s close. It did not mean every Hemi V8 program was ending. Dodge continued Hemi-powered Durango production into 2025, and Ram later announced a Hemi return for the 2026 Ram 1500 in Europe.

Which two Hemi models were ending?

The likely referents are the Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger, specifically their then-current Hemi-powered forms—not every vehicle carrying a Hemi engine. Dodge’s June 8, 2023 announcement in the Middle East presented “Last Call” editions of both cars as marking the end of their Hemi era. The regional announcement establishes the paired send-off, while Dodge’s March 20, 2023 Demon 170 release explicitly placed the end of the current Hemi-powered Charger and Challenger at the end of 2023. The exact article behind the headline has not been identified, so the interpretation is strong but not certain.

The Demon 170 was announced as the final Last Call special edition. Dodge said it produced 1,025 horsepower; that figure belongs to the Challenger SRT Demon 170, not to the Charger or Challenger lineup generally. In the release, Dodge brand chief executive officer Tim Kuniskis described the special as a way to celebrate the end of the Hemi muscle-car era, saying the company had “pulled off all the governors” to pursue factory production-car performance. Read Dodge’s Demon 170 announcement.

What did—and did not—end?

The distinction is between the end of the Charger and Challenger in their then-current Hemi-powered forms and the end of Hemi V8 production altogether. The latter did not happen in 2023. In December 2024, Stellantis North America said Hemi-powered Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat and R/T production would continue into calendar year 2025.

  • Durango SRT Hellcat: Dodge listed its supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi at 710 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque.
  • Durango R/T: Dodge listed its 5.7-liter Hemi at 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque.

Those are manufacturer specifications in Stellantis North America’s December 19, 2024 announcement, which also gave the production-extension timing. The quoted “into the 2025 calendar year” describes that continuation, not a claim that the engine disappeared from every application afterward. Matt McAlear, then Dodge CEO at Stellantis, called the Durango and Hemi “a powerful pair” in the announcement. See Stellantis North America’s Durango announcement.

Where did the Hemi go next?

Ram announced on June 5, 2025 that the 5.7-liter Hemi would return in the 2026 Ram 1500. The cited announcement addresses Europe, so it supports a Hemi return for that vehicle in that market; it should not be read as proof that ordering, availability, or specifications were identical in every country. Ram listed 395 horsepower. Its page gives inconsistent torque figures—556 Nm in one place and 555 Nm later—so neither is repeated here. Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis acknowledged the earlier decision to drop the engine, saying, “Ram screwed up when we dropped the HEMI — we own it and we fixed it.” Read Ram’s European-market announcement.

Was the new Charger a Hemi replacement?

Not in the sense of bringing the old V8 back. The Associated Press reported on March 5, 2024 that the successor Charger would be offered in electric and gasoline versions; the gasoline version used a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six, not the outgoing Hemi V8. That is a different engine and a new Charger generation, rather than a continuation of the old car’s Hemi setup. Read the Associated Press report on the new Charger.
