On September 16, 2025, two Xpeng AeroHT electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOLs) collided during a formation rehearsal for the Changchun Air Show in Changchun, Jilin Province, northeastern China. The company attributed the collision to insufficient spacing. One aircraft suffered fuselage damage and caught fire after landing. The cause has not been confirmed by an official finding in the coverage available for this article, and the injury picture is less settled than some headlines suggest.
What happened
The two aircraft were flying in formation as part of a rehearsal for the Changchun Air Show, which is held in Jilin Province. During the exercise they collided. Reporting describes damage to the fuselage of one aircraft and a fire that broke out after that aircraft landed.
The headline term “flying car” is media shorthand. These are eVTOL aircraft, designed to take off and land vertically and to fly like aircraft rather than drive on roads. The reporting identifies the manufacturer and the aircraft category, but it does not name a specific retail model. Nothing in the incident coverage tells a reader how to buy or operate one of these aircraft.
Injuries and emergency response
Xpeng AeroHT said that all personnel at the scene were safe and that local authorities had completed on-site emergency measures. That is the company’s account.

Separately, CNN reporting, carried by The Independent and other outlets, attributed a minor injury to one person, identified only as an unnamed company employee. The two accounts do not combine into a single casualty figure. A reader should not conclude that nobody was hurt, and should not treat the minor-injury report as a confirmed official tally either. Each claim is set out below with its source.
| Claim | Who made it | Status in the coverage |

Cause and investigation status
The company’s explanation for the collision was insufficient spacing between the aircraft during the formation exercise. Coverage carries that wording as a company statement. It is not a finding by an investigator.

Interesting Engineering and Public Radio of Armenia both report that the exact cause remained under investigation. No official accident report or final regulatory finding appears in the coverage available for this article. Until one is published, the spacing explanation should be read as the company’s position, and the cause should be described as unresolved.
How reliable the reporting is
The incident is documented by news outlets that relayed company statements and reported the rehearsal context. TahawulTech’s account relays statements attributed to Reuters and CNN. The Independent provides a dated account that includes both the company explanation and the separate injury attribution.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What readers can take from this
- The incident involved two aircraft from one manufacturer, during a planned formation exercise rather than a passenger flight.
- The only cause on record is the company’s explanation of insufficient spacing. It is not a confirmed finding.
- Whether anyone was injured is reported with conflicting attributions: the company says all personnel were safe, and a separate report cites a minor injury to one employee.
- The incident coverage says nothing about consumer availability, pricing, or accessories for these aircraft.
Readers looking for a definitive cause or final casualty count should look for an official accident report from Chinese aviation authorities or a direct statement from Xpeng AeroHT. Neither appeared in the coverage reviewed.
