The 2026 EPA Fuel Economy Guide estimates the Tesla Cybertruck AWD’s energy cost at about $79 per month, based on its $950 annual fuel-cost estimate divided by 12. There is no comparable, defensible nationwide monthly figure for a Ram HD: its cost depends on whether it has a gasoline or diesel engine, its fuel economy, monthly mileage and local fuel prices. The available figures do not establish a “staggering” gap for every U.S. driver.
What the official Cybertruck figure means
The U.S. Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency’s 2026 Fuel Economy Guide lists the Cybertruck AWD at 43 kWh per 100 miles combined and gives it an estimated annual fuel cost of $950. Dividing that annual estimate by 12 yields about $79 a month.

That is a standardized estimate, not a promise about a particular owner’s bill. Actual charging costs depend on electricity rates, miles driven and where charging happens. Home charging at a time-of-use rate, for example, may cost differently from public charging; a personalized estimate needs the driver’s applicable electricity prices and charging mix.

The 2026 Ram 2500 and 3500 lineup includes gasoline and diesel powertrains, as shown in Ram’s 2026 Heavy Duty capacity guide. Fuel cost therefore depends first on which engine the truck has. It also depends on the truck’s actual miles per gallon and how far it travels; the manufacturer’s lineup and capability information does not establish real-world monthly fuel economy.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s September 29, 2026 release reports that the U.S. on-highway diesel average for September 28 was $6.382 per gallon. The reported regional averages ranged from $5.955 per gallon on the Gulf Coast to $7.357 on the West Coast. These are dated diesel prices, not a monthly bill and not prices that apply to a gasoline-powered Ram. EIA’s Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update provides the underlying price series.
Because no monthly mileage, Ram MPG or location is specified, a Ram monthly total—and thus a nationwide monthly gap—cannot be calculated from those figures alone. Diesel prices are also time-sensitive: EIA notes that its Monthly Energy Review data may be preliminary or estimated and subject to revision.

Calculate an apples-to-apples monthly comparison
Choose the same monthly distance for both trucks, then use the Cybertruck’s guide rating and the selected Ram’s fuel type, MPG and local pump price. For an energy-only comparison:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

- Cybertruck: monthly miles × 43 kWh per 100 miles × local electricity price per kWh ÷ 100.
- Ram HD: monthly miles ÷ the selected truck’s observed or explicitly assumed MPG × local price per gallon. Use diesel pricing for the Cummins diesel and gasoline pricing for the HEMI.
- Difference: Ram monthly fuel cost minus Cybertruck monthly charging cost. A positive result means the Ram costs more to fuel under the inputs chosen.
For example, a valid estimate needs the monthly distance, the Ram’s fuel economy for the relevant use, the local gasoline or diesel price, the electricity tariff and the expected split between home and public charging. If towing or heavy hauling is part of the comparison, use fuel economy that reflects that work; the result would describe that use case, not every Ram HD driver.

Keep the comparison to energy costs
The calculation above compares electricity and fuel only. It does not include purchase price, financing, insurance, maintenance, tires, depreciation, home-charger equipment or installation, or public charging fees. Adding those categories would require separate, comparable inputs and could change the broader ownership-cost comparison.

Tesla’s Cybertruck listing uses a 41 kWh per 100 miles consumption figure in its own savings estimate, alongside a generic 20-mpg comparison vehicle and price references dated April 23, 2026. That is a manufacturer example, not a Ram HD-specific calculation; it also uses a different consumption figure from the 43 kWh per 100 miles in the 2026 EPA guide. Those figures should not be silently combined.
