The Chevy 3.0-liter Duramax is a turbocharged inline-six diesel for light-duty trucks and full-size SUVs. It delivers the relaxed low-rpm pulling power and highway range associated with a diesel without being the same engine as GM’s heavy-duty 6.6-liter Duramax V8.
There are two versions to know: the LM2, used primarily from 2020 through 2022, and the more powerful LZ0, introduced for 2023 applications. Both use a 10-speed automatic transmission, common-rail direct injection, a variable-geometry turbocharger, a diesel particulate filter (DPF), exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR), and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) with diesel exhaust fluid (DEF).

What is the Chevy 3.0L Duramax?
GM designed the 3.0L Duramax for Chevrolet Silverado 1500 buyers and full-size SUV drivers who want diesel torque, towing ability, and extended highway range in a lighter-duty package. Its inline-six layout uses two overhead camshafts and common-rail direct injection. A variable-geometry turbocharger helps the engine produce useful boost across a broad operating range.
The engine is paired with GM’s 10-speed automatic transmission. Unlike the 6.6L Duramax V8, which is used in Silverado HD trucks, the 3.0L diesel is intended for half-ton trucks and large SUVs such as the Silverado 1500, Tahoe, and Suburban. Equivalent versions are also found in the GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, Yukon XL, and Cadillac Escalade.

The first-generation LM2 has an aluminum block, an 84.0-mm bore, a 90.0-mm stroke, and a 15:1 compression ratio, according to GM service information. The newer LZ0 received substantial hardware and calibration changes rather than simply a software-only power increase.
LM2 versus LZ0: what changed?
| Model years | RPO code | Horsepower | Torque | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020–2022 | LM2 | 277 hp | 460 lb-ft | Original 3.0L Duramax generation |
| 2023–present applications | LZ0 | 305 hp | 495 lb-ft | Revised engine with higher output |
For the LZ0, GM revised the turbocharger compressor, increased fuel-injector flow, changed the piston-cooling oil jets, and adopted steel pistons. Cooling-system changes were also part of the update. The result is 28 more horsepower and 35 more lb-ft than the LM2.
That distinction matters when shopping for a used Chevrolet. A 2020–2022 truck or SUV does not have the 305-hp rating often quoted for the current engine. Always check the model year and RPO code instead of assuming every 3.0L Duramax has identical output.

For the 2026 model year, Chevrolet lists the 3.0L Duramax in the Silverado 1500, Tahoe, and Suburban.
Silverado 1500
Chevrolet lists the diesel as standard on the Silverado 1500 ZR2 and available on the Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, and High Country. The listed output is 305 hp and 495 lb-ft, with the 10-speed automatic transmission.
The diesel is not offered on every Silverado trim, and its availability can vary with cab, bed, drivetrain, and package selection. Confirm the engine option on the vehicle’s window sticker or build sheet.
Tahoe and Suburban
For 2026, Chevrolet lists the diesel as available on the LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country trims of both the Tahoe and Suburban. It is not listed across the entire trim range, so a lower-priced SUV should not automatically be assumed to have the diesel option.

| Vehicle | Published diesel figures |
|---|---|
| Silverado 1500 | Up to 28 mpg highway in the listed 2WD configuration |
| Tahoe | 22 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, 24 mpg combined in the cited 2WD configuration |
| Suburban | 21 mpg city and 26 mpg highway in the cited diesel configuration |
Chevrolet cites a maximum highway range of 624 miles for the Tahoe and 728 miles for the Suburban, based on the applicable fuel-tank capacity and estimated fuel economy. Actual mileage and range change with speed, weather, tires, payload, towing, terrain, drivetrain, and driving style. Older vehicles have different ratings; for example, the 2022 Tahoe diesel was rated at 277 hp and 460 lb-ft.
How much can the 3.0L Duramax tow?
The engine’s torque makes it particularly comfortable for highway towing, but the maximum rating depends heavily on the vehicle configuration. The widely repeated “13,300-pound towing capacity” applies only to a specific Silverado 1500 setup, not to every 3.0L Duramax.
| Vehicle or configuration | Maximum conventional towing |
|---|---|
| Silverado 1500 Double Cab, standard bed, 2WD, Max Trailering Package, 20-inch wheels | 13,300 lb |
| Silverado 1500 Crew Cab short bed, 2WD, Max Trailering Package, 20-inch wheels | 13,200 lb |
| Silverado 1500 Crew Cab short bed, 4WD, Max Trailering Package, 20-inch wheels | 13,000 lb |
| Silverado 1500 ZR2 4WD diesel | 8,700 lb |
| Tahoe 2WD diesel | 8,200 lb |
| Tahoe 4WD diesel | 8,000 lb |
| Suburban 2WD diesel | 8,100 lb |
| Suburban 4WD diesel | 7,800 lb |
Cab style, bed length, axle ratio, wheels, tires, trailering equipment, passenger weight, cargo, and accessories all affect the final rating. Before towing, check the door-jamb labels, owner’s manual, and Chevrolet trailering guide for the exact vehicle.
Fuel requirements and DEF
The 3.0L Duramax requires ultra-low-sulfur diesel containing less than 15 parts per million of sulfur. GM says not to use diesel with more than 20% biodiesel by volume. Do not put gasoline, engine oil, or automatic-transmission fluid in the fuel tank.
GM recommends TOP TIER Detergent Diesel. If it is unavailable, the diesel supplement identifies ACDelco Diesel Fuel Conditioner as the preferred alternative rather than indiscriminate use of generic additives.
DEF is a separate fluid used by the SCR emissions system. It must go into the DEF filler, never the diesel tank. The Driver Information Center displays DEF level. Pickups use an “Empty (E) to Full (F)” bar, while SUVs use an “Empty (0) to Full (1)” display. When the display shows LOW, add DEF promptly.
A continuing DEF-system fault is not merely a harmless reminder. If the issue is ignored, the DEF warning may flash and the vehicle can eventually impose a speed limitation.

DPF regeneration: what owners should understand
The diesel particulate filter traps soot and periodically cleans itself through regeneration. A DPF message does not automatically mean the engine or DPF needs replacement.
Repeated short trips, frequent cold starts, interrupted regeneration cycles, poor fuel, or a faulty temperature or emissions sensor can create soot-loading problems. The correct response depends on the message shown in the Driver Information Center and the vehicle’s operating conditions.
There is no reliable universal rule that every owner must drive a fixed number of miles at a particular speed to force regeneration. Follow the instructions in the vehicle-specific owner’s manual. If warnings remain, or if the vehicle enters reduced-power operation, have the system diagnosed rather than repeatedly continuing to drive and hoping the warning clears.

The fuel-filter monitor estimates remaining filter life from operating conditions. When the Driver Information Center displays CHANGE FUEL FILTER, replace the filter as soon as practical.
On pickups, the monitor does not reset itself after the filter is changed. Use this process:
- Open the Fuel Filter Life Remaining display in the Driver Information Center.
- Press the steering-wheel thumbwheel.
- Select Yes to confirm the replacement.
Do not reset the monitor unless the filter was actually replaced. Resetting it early prevents the system from accurately calculating the next service interval.
Water contamination is a more serious problem. Possible symptoms include a “Water in Fuel” warning, a no-start condition, fuel-pressure or misfire codes, fuel-pump faults, and—in severe cases—metal particles in the fuel system. If contamination is suspected, the filter housing and fuel/water-separator reservoir need to be cleaned as specified by GM service information; simply installing another filter may not solve the problem.

GM has published service information covering several conditions on vehicles equipped with the LM2 or LZ0. These documents identify repair procedures or possible causes; they do not prove that every engine will develop the problem.
| Condition | Relevant information |
|---|---|
| Oil leaks | GM bulletin 23-NA-011 covers possible leak paths on specified Silverado 1500, Tahoe, Suburban, GMC, and Cadillac applications from the listed model years. |
| Fuel contamination | GM bulletin 18-NA-361 describes water-in-fuel warnings, no-starts, fuel-pressure codes, misfires, fuel-pump faults, and possible metal contamination on certain vehicles. |
| LZ0 buzz, rattle, or vibration | On certain 2023–2024 Silverado and Sierra trucks, bulletin PIT6300 attributes a light-load noise to a potentially cracked catalytic-converter brace or damaged or missing hold-down studs. |
| Early LZ0 engine exchange information | GM temporarily operated an engine-exchange program for certain 2023 Silverado and Sierra vehicles during new-product monitoring. The bulletin later stated that the program had ended and regular parts ordering applied. |
A technical service bulletin is not a safety recall. To check for open recalls, use the vehicle identification number with the NHTSA recall lookup or Chevrolet’s owner resources.
Is the 3.0L Duramax a good choice?
It is a strong fit for an owner who drives substantial highway mileage, tows regularly, values low-rpm torque, and wants the range of a diesel-powered half-ton truck or full-size SUV. The inline-six is smooth, and the current engine can pull strongly without needing high engine speed.
It is less suitable for a vehicle used almost exclusively for short trips, repeated cold starts, extended idling, or infrequent maintenance. Diesel fuel quality matters, and the owner must be willing to manage DEF, DPF regeneration, fuel-filter service, and emissions-system warnings. Those requirements can also make repairs more expensive than on a simpler gasoline engine.
Common claims that need correcting
- “The 3.0L Duramax is the 6.6L Duramax.” No. They are different engines for different vehicle classes.
- “Every 3.0L makes 305 hp and 495 lb-ft.” No. LM2 vehicles from 2020–2022 are rated at 277 hp and 460 lb-ft.
- “Every diesel Silverado can tow 13,300 pounds.” No. That is the maximum for a specific Silverado configuration.
- “Every Tahoe and Suburban trim can be ordered with the diesel.” No. Current Chevrolet listings begin with specified LT-level trims and extend through High Country.
- “The fuel-filter monitor resets automatically.” Not on pickups; it must be reset after replacement.
- “A DEF warning is only informational.” An unresolved fault can eventually result in speed limitation.
- “A service bulletin means the engine was recalled.” No. Recall status must be checked by VIN.
FAQ
Is the Chevy 3.0L Duramax a reliable engine?
It can be a durable engine when maintained correctly, but it has more fuel and emissions equipment than a gasoline engine. Fuel contamination, oil leaks, DPF or DEF faults, and sensor problems can produce expensive repairs. Maintenance history and the specific vehicle’s condition matter more than a blanket reliability label.
What is the difference between the LM2 and LZ0 Duramax?
The LM2 is the original 2020–2022 version rated at 277 hp and 460 lb-ft. The LZ0 arrived in 2023 applications with 305 hp and 495 lb-ft, along with revised turbocharger, injector, piston, oil-jet, and cooling-system hardware.
Recommended Free Tools
How often does a 3.0L Duramax need to regenerate its DPF?
There is no single mileage or time interval that applies to every vehicle. Regeneration depends on soot loading, temperature, driving conditions, and the control strategy. Follow the Driver Information Center and the vehicle-specific owner’s manual instead of using a universal driving formula.
Is the 3.0L Duramax good for short trips?
It is generally a poor choice when almost all driving consists of very short trips and repeated cold starts. That use can make it harder for the emissions system to complete normal regeneration and can increase the likelihood of DPF-related warnings. Highway mileage and regular operating time suit it better.
The Bottom Line
The Chevy 3.0L Duramax is a strong light-duty diesel for highway drivers and owners who need substantial torque and range without moving to a Silverado HD. The LM2 delivers 277 hp and 460 lb-ft, while the newer LZ0 raises output to 305 hp and 495 lb-ft. Its advantages come with diesel-specific responsibilities: correct fuel, DEF, DPF regeneration, fuel-filter service, and prompt attention to warning messages. Choose it for the way you drive—not simply because the word “Duramax” appears on the badge.
