iOS 26 does not turn every factory infotainment system into CarPlay. Your iPhone still needs a compatible vehicle or aftermarket receiver, and the exact experience depends on whether the car supports wired CarPlay, wireless CarPlay, or both.
What iOS 26 does bring is a substantial CarPlay refresh: the Liquid Glass interface, compact incoming-call alerts, widgets, Live Activities, pinned Messages conversations, Tapbacks, and additional appearance controls. Here is how the update works in a real car, how to configure it, and what to check when the connection fails.

What changed in CarPlay with iOS 26?
The biggest change is visual, but several additions make CarPlay more useful when you are driving. The available features can vary by vehicle display and by whether an individual app supports CarPlay.
| Feature | What it does | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Liquid Glass redesign | Updates CarPlay controls, icons, and app presentation. | The vehicle must support CarPlay; the update does not upgrade an incompatible stereo. |
| Compact calls | Shows incoming-call information without covering the entire display. | The exact layout depends on the vehicle screen. |
| Widgets | Displays glanceable information from supported apps. | Widgets are configured on the iPhone, not on the car display. |
| Live Activities | Shows supported real-time updates such as directions, sports scores, and delivery estimates. | The app must support presenting its Live Activity in CarPlay. |
| Messages Tapbacks | Lets you react to a message with a thumbs-up or another emoji. | Messaging remains designed around voice and limited driving-safe interaction. |
| Pinned conversations | Brings conversations pinned in Messages on the iPhone into CarPlay. | They are not pinned independently in CarPlay. |
| Smart Display Zoom | Changes the scale of the CarPlay interface on certain displays. | Only some vehicles and screen configurations support it. |
Liquid Glass and appearance settings
CarPlay in iOS 26 uses Apple’s Liquid Glass design language. You can choose from light, dark, and clear icon styles where those options are supported. CarPlay is dark by default in most vehicles, although the available behavior can be controlled by the vehicle implementation.

To keep CarPlay dark, use the vehicle’s controls to open Settings > Appearance > Always Dark. You can also change the CarPlay wallpaper from Settings > Wallpaper on the CarPlay screen.
Compact incoming calls
Incoming calls no longer need to take over the full CarPlay display. The caller’s identity appears in a smaller interface, helping keep a map and upcoming turn visible while you decide whether to answer.
Messages Tapbacks and pinned conversations
When a message arrives, you can say “like that message” to send a thumbs-up. Alternatively, use the Tapback button to choose another emoji reaction.
Conversations pinned in the Messages app on your iPhone also appear as pinned conversations in CarPlay. CarPlay mirrors that iPhone organization; it does not maintain a separate pinned list.
Widgets
Widgets put small pieces of information on the CarPlay Dashboard without requiring you to open a full app. The number of widget stacks depends on the vehicle’s display, so the same iPhone may show a different layout in two cars.
Configure them while parked, from the iPhone:
- Open Settings.
- Tap General > CarPlay.
- Select your vehicle.
- Tap Widgets > Add Widgets, then follow the onscreen instructions.
To reorder or remove widgets, return to Settings > General > CarPlay > [your car] > Widgets. Drag the reorder control to move one, or tap the remove control to delete it. This screen also includes Smart Rotate and Widget Suggestions.
Live Activities
Supported Live Activities can appear in the CarPlay Dashboard. Examples include Apple Maps directions, live sports updates, and food-delivery arrival estimates. A Live Activity appearing on your iPhone does not guarantee that it will appear in CarPlay—the app must implement the CarPlay presentation.

Smart Display Zoom
Some vehicles let you change the scale of the CarPlay interface with Smart Display Zoom. Look for it in Settings on the CarPlay display. If the option is missing, that is normally a vehicle or screen-configuration limitation, not a setting you need to unlock on the iPhone.
Which iPhones and cars support iOS 26 CarPlay?
iOS 26 supports the iPhone 11 and later, including the iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). CarPlay availability still depends on the vehicle or aftermarket navigation system. Installing iOS 26 will not add CarPlay to a car that lacks compatible hardware.
CarPlay availability can also vary by country or region. Check the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications or Apple’s supported-model information before buying a receiver or assuming a particular feature will work.
CarPlay itself does not mean every iPhone app appears on the dashboard. Only apps that provide CarPlay support are shown. Installing an app on the iPhone is not enough.
How to connect an iPhone to CarPlay
Wired CarPlay
- Start the vehicle.
- Confirm that Siri is enabled on the iPhone.
- Connect the iPhone to the car’s CarPlay-capable USB port with an Apple USB cable.
- If CarPlay does not open automatically, select the CarPlay logo on the vehicle display.
Do not assume every USB port supports CarPlay. Some ports only charge the phone or play media. Look for a CarPlay logo or smartphone symbol, and check the owner’s manual if the correct port is unclear.
Cars that support wired and wireless CarPlay
Connect the iPhone by USB the first time. The phone may then show an alert offering future wireless connections. Accept it if you want the vehicle to connect without a cable on later trips.
Wireless-only CarPlay
- Press and hold the voice-command button on the steering wheel.
- Put the stereo into wireless or Bluetooth pairing mode.
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi on.
- Tap the CarPlay network and confirm that Auto-Join is enabled.
- Open Settings > General > CarPlay.
- Select the vehicle.
Wireless CarPlay uses both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Bluetooth by itself is not enough to establish a working wireless CarPlay session.

For some electric vehicles, Apple may ask you to identify the vehicle in Maps after CarPlay connects. This allows EV routing features to use the correct vehicle information.

Using Siri and voice control
You can activate Siri in several ways:
- Press and hold the steering-wheel voice-command button.
- Touch and hold the Dashboard or Home button on the CarPlay touchscreen.
- Say “Hey Siri” in vehicles that support it.
Useful requests include:
- “Get directions to the nearest coffee shop.”
- “Call Eliza Block.”
- “Play more songs like this one.”
- “What’s my next meeting?”
Voice Control is separate from ordinary Siri requests. To activate a visible control, use the exact pattern “Tap [button name]”, such as “Tap Go,” “Tap Zoom In,” or “Tap Route Overview.” Other documented navigation labels include Pan, Tracking, Overview, Expand, Collapse, Close, Report, All Guidance, Alerts Only, No Guidance, Siri, and Keyboard.
In Music, available button names include Play, Pause, Fast Forward, Rewind, Shuffle, Repeat, Autoplay, Favorite, More, Go back, and List.
Automatically sending dictated messages
By default, Siri can ask you to confirm a dictated message before sending it. To change that behavior, open Settings in CarPlay and select Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri, then enable Automatically Send Messages.
This does not turn CarPlay into a normal text-entry interface. Message composition remains restricted to the driving-oriented interface and voice controls.
Useful CarPlay settings
Open Settings on the CarPlay display to find controls for:
- Wallpaper
- Driving Focus
- Appearance
- Suggestions in CarPlay
- Show Album Art
To have Driving Focus activate whenever CarPlay connects, choose Settings > Driving Focus > Activate With CarPlay. If the iPhone mistakenly identifies you as the driver while you are a passenger, tap the Driving Focus notification and choose I’m not driving.
Album artwork can be shown or hidden from Settings > Show Album Art.

Only CarPlay-compatible apps appear in this list and on the vehicle screen. Navigation, audio, messaging, calling, parking, charging, and automotive apps may support CarPlay, but ordinary iPhone apps remain phone-only unless their developers provide a CarPlay experience.
How to capture a CarPlay screenshot
iOS 26 can capture the vehicle display along with an iPhone screenshot. On the iPhone, go to Settings > General > Screen Capture and turn on CarPlay Screenshots. While connected to CarPlay, take a normal screenshot on the iPhone.
This is useful for documenting a layout problem or sharing a navigation screen, but take screenshots only when safely parked.

Wireless CarPlay connects but behaves incorrectly
Check all three parts of the wireless connection:
- Settings > Bluetooth: Bluetooth must be on.
- Settings > Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi must be on.
- The CarPlay network must have Auto-Join enabled.
Also confirm that the vehicle is in wireless or Bluetooth pairing mode. A Bluetooth connection that handles calls or audio does not necessarily mean the wireless CarPlay session has been established.
CarPlay does not open automatically
Tap the CarPlay logo on the vehicle’s media display. Automatic launch is not guaranteed on every vehicle model.
The car does not detect the iPhone
- Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- If restrictions are enabled, tap Allowed Apps.
- Make sure CarPlay is allowed.
Then restart both the iPhone and the vehicle, verify that Siri is enabled, and check for a firmware update for the vehicle’s stereo.
Wired CarPlay disconnects
Try a different cable and the vehicle’s other USB port. Use a direct USB connection rather than an adapter if possible. Inspect the iPhone charging port for debris or damage, and update the stereo firmware.

Forget and pair the car again
If the basic checks do not help, remove the saved pairing:
- Open Settings > General > CarPlay on the iPhone.
- Tap the vehicle.
- Choose Forget This Car.
- Set up CarPlay again using the wired or wireless procedure for your vehicle.
A third-party audio app fails
Try another audio app. If CarPlay works normally elsewhere and the problem is limited to one third-party app, update that app and contact its developer. The fault may be in the app’s CarPlay integration rather than in the vehicle connection.
What iOS 26 CarPlay does not include
Several common claims about the update are incorrect:
- It does not add CarPlay to every car. Compatible vehicle or aftermarket hardware is still required.
- Widgets are not edited on the car screen. Use Settings > General > CarPlay > [your car] > Widgets on the iPhone.
- Smart Display Zoom is not universal. It requires a supported vehicle and screen configuration.
- Every iPhone app does not appear in CarPlay. Apps need CarPlay support.
- Wireless CarPlay does not use Bluetooth alone. Wi-Fi and Auto-Join are also part of the connection.
- Apple Intelligence is not a general CarPlay dashboard feature. Apple’s documented iOS 26 CarPlay changes focus on the redesign, calls, Messages, widgets, Live Activities, and related controls.
CarPlay Ultra is also separate from this standard CarPlay update. It is a deeper vehicle integration that can extend across the driver’s displays and requires compatible automaker hardware and software.
iOS 26 CarPlay version status
iOS 26 was released on September 15, 2025. As of August 9, 2026, the latest public release listed in Apple’s support documentation is iOS 26.6, released July 27, 2026. Feature availability can still vary by country, vehicle, display, and app.
FAQ
Does iOS 26 add CarPlay to an older car?
No. The car must already support CarPlay, either through its factory infotainment system or a compatible aftermarket receiver. An iOS update cannot add the required vehicle hardware.
Why does wireless CarPlay connect through Bluetooth but not work?
Wireless CarPlay requires Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Check Settings > Bluetooth and Settings > Wi-Fi on the iPhone, confirm Auto-Join is enabled for the CarPlay network, and make sure the vehicle is in wireless pairing mode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhere are CarPlay widgets configured in iOS 26?
On the iPhone, open Settings > General > CarPlay, select your car, and tap Widgets. You can add, remove, and reorder widgets there. The available number of widget stacks depends on the vehicle display.
Is CarPlay Ultra part of the iOS 26 CarPlay redesign?
No. CarPlay Ultra is a separate, deeper integration that can use multiple vehicle displays. It requires support from the automaker and compatible vehicle hardware.
The Bottom Line
For supported vehicles, iOS 26 makes CarPlay easier to scan and more personal without changing its basic role as a driving-focused extension of the iPhone. The most useful additions are the compact call interface, configurable widgets, Live Activities, and improved Messages controls. If your car is not compatible, however, no iOS 26 setting will create CarPlay—and if wireless pairing fails, remember that Wi-Fi is just as important as Bluetooth.
