The Nissan Tsuru earned its place in Mexico through decades of familiar, accessible transportation—but its long production run ended amid a documented record of serious safety concerns. Nissan announced in October 2016 that production would end by May 2017, after reporting more than 2.4 million sales. The car’s legacy is therefore both cultural and cautionary: an enduring nameplate, and a model whose tested basic version offered dangerously poor crash protection.
Why did the Nissan Tsuru last so long in Mexico?
Nissan traced the Tsuru’s family-car story to 1984 and said it had provided economical, dependable mobility in Mexico and other markets for more than three decades. In its October 2016 announcement, the company reported more than 2.4 million sales. Those figures explain the car’s reach, but claims that it was reliable or durable are Nissan’s characterization, not the result of independent reliability testing cited here. Nissan’s 2016 announcement also described the Tsuru as having a large following.
The model’s familiarity was part of its staying power. Nissan Mexicana president Mayra González said, “The majority of Mexicans have some history that binds us to the Nissan Tsuru.” That is a manufacturer’s description of the car’s cultural standing, not a measured survey of Mexican opinion. Nissan also said the Tsuru received the highest customer-satisfaction level in the subcompact category of J.D. Power’s 2013 and 2014 Mexican Vehicle Ownership Satisfaction Study; the underlying study tables are not available in the cited material, so that recognition should likewise be attributed to Nissan.
The final chapter included a 1,000-unit Buen Camino commemorative edition. Nissan said general production at its CIVAC plant would finish in May 2017, describing the model as part of Mexican identity and emphasizing owners’ emotional attachment. Nissan’s Buen Camino announcement documents the limited run and the company’s account of the Tsuru’s place in the market.

Why did Nissan stop making the Tsuru?
Nissan’s October 26, 2016 announcement set an end date of May 2017, but the Tsuru’s safety record is essential context for understanding why its continued production had become controversial. In a 2016 statement about the decision, Global NCAP Secretary General David Ward called it “a long overdue decision to cease production of a car that is fundamentally unsafe.” That is an advocacy statement; the test findings and crash data provide the underlying context.
The key point is not simply that a long-running, affordable car went out of production. Latin NCAP had already awarded the tested basic Tsuru zero stars for both adult and child occupant protection in its 2013 test. Later, its 2016 fatal-crash research and a separate Tsuru–Versa demonstration kept the safety concerns in public focus.

How safe was the Nissan Tsuru?
Latin NCAP’s 2013 test
Latin NCAP’s report on the Tsuru/Sentra B13 describes near-total collapse of the passenger compartment and high forces on the test dummies. The tested basic version received zero stars for adult and child occupant protection. Its rear seats had two-point belts rather than conventional three-point belts; Latin NCAP said that configuration prevented proper child-seat installation and concluded that the version was not equipped to transport children safely. These findings apply to the tested basic version and the 2013 test, not automatically to every Tsuru variant or every crash circumstance. Read Latin NCAP’s test report.
Fatal crashes involving the model, 2007–2012
Latin NCAP’s April 5, 2016 announcement, based on official Mexican national statistics as described by the organization, reported 2,011 fatal crashes involving the Nissan Tsuru and 4,102 deaths in those crashes from 2007 through 2012. It also reported averages of 335 fatal crashes and 684 deaths per year over that six-year interval. Latin NCAP said the Tsuru had the highest fatality score among crashes in which it was involved for most of the years analyzed. These are counts of crashes involving the model—not proof that the Tsuru alone caused each crash or death, and not an individual driver’s estimate of risk. The 2016 Tsuru–Versa demonstration
In a separate demonstration hosted by Latin NCAP, Global NCAP and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety at IIHS headquarters in Virginia, organizers crashed a 2015 Nissan Tsuru sold in Mexico into a 2016 Nissan Versa sold in the United States. Both cars had been manufactured in Mexico. The setup used 50-percent overlap and an 80 mph (129 km/h) combined closing speed. Latin NCAP reported that the Tsuru’s structures failed and its survival space was compromised.
This was a specific demonstration under stated conditions, not a controlled estimate of how often occupants would be injured in real-world crashes, nor a comparison of all Tsuru and Versa versions. In particular, the result for a US-market 2016 Versa should not be treated as a test result for a Mexico-market Versa. Global NCAP’s David Ward said the test showed “the importance of minimum crash test regulations.” The organizations’ release describes the demonstration.

Can you still get Nissan Tsuru parts?
Nissan said in 2016 that it would continue service and parts support after production ended, offering repair and maintenance support for the foreseeable future. That historical commitment does not establish what is in stock in 2026 or whether a particular listing fits a given car. Before buying a replacement part, confirm the vehicle’s year, market, trim and exact part number with the seller or a qualified repairer.
Production ending in 2017, a vehicle remaining on the road, and a specific part being available today are separate matters. The available sources do not establish a current count of Tsuru vehicles still in service or present-day parts inventory.
