Are there cars made of solid gold?
The examples described by museums, automakers and other sources are decorated cars, not cars whose bodies or structures are made of solid gold. The term “gold car” can refer to quite different treatments: gold-plated trim, gold leaf applied to a surface, or individual components with a gold finish. Those distinctions matter: a gold leaf exterior and a gold-finished emblem are not the same thing as a gold-plated car.
Gold is also a challenging material for automotive decoration. Bugatti says high-purity gold is soft, valuable and difficult to work with in automobile crafting. Rolls-Royce similarly warns that its solid-gold Spirit of Ecstasy mascot is not recommended for vehicle use because pure gold is soft. Neither source establishes that a gold finish improves a car’s performance or durability.
Which cars have gold-plated or gold-finished parts?
1955 Daimler DK400 Golden Zebra
The Louwman Museum describes the Golden Zebra as a DK400 limousine chassis finished with ivory-white paint and gold-plated trim. Gold leaf appeared in the interior alongside ivory and zebra-hide upholstery. It is an example of gold used as ornament within a coachbuilt design—not a gold-bodied automobile. Gold-plated DeLoreans offered in 1980
According to the DeLorean Museum, American Express featured a limited edition of DeLoreans in its 1980 Christmas catalog, offering up to 100 cars plated in 24-karat gold for $85,000 each. Two cars sold through that promotion. The museum distinguishes those two factory-assembled cars from a third, completed later using spare panels and a development vehicle. Bugatti Chiron L’Ébé, 2022
Bugatti said three handmade Chiron L’Ébé cars received 24-karat gold-finished decorative elements, including the emblem on the horseshoe grille. The automaker described this as the first high-quality gold finish on that emblem and said the gold was 99.9 percent pure. These are Bugatti’s descriptions of its own special edition, rather than independent specifications. Bugatti’s June 29, 2022 announcement.

Carlsson CS50 Versailles, 2014
RTÉ reported that German tuning specialist Carlsson presented the CS50 Versailles, a gold-leaf-covered Mercedes S-Class, at the Geneva Motor Show. Several thousand sheets of gold leaf covered about half the exterior, with additional leaf on parts of the steering wheel, dashboard, controls and other details. RTÉ reported that applying it took around 200 man-hours. The same 2014 report gave a planned run of 25 cars, said 10 had been reserved at the time, and listed a price of €359,000. Rolls-Royce Spirit of Ecstasy finishes
Rolls-Royce lists a 9-carat gold-plated Spirit of Ecstasy and a 24-carat solid-gold version among its finishes. The company cautions that the solid-gold mascot is not recommended for vehicle use because pure gold is soft. These are marque-specific accessory options, not evidence of a gold-bodied Rolls-Royce. What is the most expensive gold-plated car?
Guinness World Records lists the Sultan of Brunei’s wedding Rolls-Royce Silver Spur limousine as the “most valuable gold-plated car,” giving it a value of $14 million and dating it to the mid-1990s. Treat that as the value stated in the record entry—not a verified current valuation or a present-day sale price. Guinness World Records’ entry.
The figures reported for other vehicles are not directly comparable with that record claim. The DeLorean’s $85,000 was an offer price in 1980; the CS50 Versailles’s €359,000 was reported in 2014; and Guinness gives a record valuation for a different car from the mid-1990s. They concern different dates, markets and types of gold treatment, rather than comparable current sale prices.

The clearest way to compare these examples is by the extent and method of decoration: a small mascot or trim detail is different from gold leaf covering much of an exterior. Their purpose and provenance also differ, from coachbuilt ornament and a catalog promotion to a bespoke commission. The sources do not establish equivalent examples made with other precious metals.
