Cars that feature both turbocharging and supercharging include Volkswagen 1.4 TSI Twincharger models, the Nissan March Super Turbo, Lancia Delta S4, Volvo T6/T8 Drive-E cars, and Genesis GV80 Coupe and G90 models with a 48V electric supercharger. Mechanical twincharging and electric supercharging are related but different systems.

A turbocharger uses exhaust-gas energy, while a conventional supercharger is driven mechanically by the engine. Manufacturers combine them to improve low-rpm response and maintain strong high-rpm airflow. The verified examples span historic Japanese and European cars, modern Volvo powertrains, and current Genesis vehicles.

Key takeaways

  • A twincharged engine uses both a turbocharger and a supercharger; a twin-turbo engine does not qualify unless it also has a supercharger.
  • Volkswagen’s 1.4 TSI Twincharger appeared in the Golf GT, Jetta, Beetle Cabriolet, and Scirocco, with outputs ranging from 118 kW/160 PS to 125 kW/170 PS in the cited specifications.
  • The 1990 Nissan March Super Turbo combined a 930cc engine with a turbocharger and supercharger, producing 81 kW/110 PS and 130 Nm.
  • Volvo T6 and T8 Drive-E powertrains paired mechanical supercharging with turbocharging, while the V60 T8 also added an electric motor and battery.
  • Modern Genesis GV80 Coupe and G90 models use a different arrangement: a twin-turbo V6 supplemented by a 48V electrically driven supercharger.

What does twincharging mean?

A twincharged engine combines two different forced-induction devices: a turbocharger driven by exhaust gas and a supercharger driven either mechanically by the engine or electrically by a high-voltage electrical system. The purpose is to improve low-speed response without giving up the turbocharger’s ability to supply efficient airflow at higher engine speeds.

A conventional belt-driven supercharger can produce boost before the exhaust flow is sufficient to spin a turbocharger effectively. The turbocharger can then take over as engine speed and exhaust energy rise. Volkswagen summarized the operating idea on the Golf GT by stating: “The highlight: the supercharger operates at low revs, while the turbocharger kicks in at higher revs.” Volkswagen’s Golf V historical model information documents the Golf GT’s 1.4-litre Twincharger engine.

The two compressors do not necessarily produce equal boost throughout the rev range. Depending on the engine, the supercharger may assist alone at low speed, operate in series with the turbocharger during the transition, or disengage after the turbocharger can provide the required airflow.

Which production cars had both a turbocharger and a mechanical supercharger?

The clearest factory-installed mechanical twincharging examples came from Volkswagen, Nissan, Lancia, and Volvo. These systems used a mechanically driven compressor—often a Roots-type or volumetric supercharger—in addition to an exhaust-gas turbocharger.

Car or powertrain Engine and induction Documented output How the system was used Production or market context
Volkswagen Golf GT 1.4 TSI 1.4-litre four-cylinder; turbocharger and mechanical supercharger 125 kW / 170 PS Supercharger at low revs; turbocharger at higher revs 2006 Golf GT; Volkswagen identified it as the first Twincharger TSI
Volkswagen Jetta 1.4 TSI 1.4-litre four-cylinder; Roots-type mechanical supercharger and turbocharger 118 kW / 160 PS; 240 Nm Supercharger assistance at low speed, with the turbocharger taking over at about 3,500 rpm 2011 technical presentation; specification and availability depend on market
Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet 1.4 TSI 1.4-litre four-cylinder; turbocharger and supercharger 118 kW / 160 PS; 240 Nm from 1,500–4,500 rpm Twincharging broadened torque delivery 2013 Beetle Cabriolet specification
Volkswagen Scirocco 1.4 TSI 1.4-litre four-cylinder; belt-driven Roots-type supercharger and turbocharger 118 kW / 160 PS; 240 Nm Magnetic clutch disengages the supercharger as operating conditions change 2008 Scirocco specification
Nissan March Super Turbo 930cc MA09ERT four-cylinder; turbocharger and supercharger 81 kW / 110 PS; 130 Nm Small-displacement engine used both compressors to improve response and output 1990 Japanese-market model documented by Nissan Heritage
Lancia Delta S4 1,759cc four-cylinder; volumetric compressor and turbocharger 250 HP road version; nearly 500 HP racing version Volumetric compressor for low rpm and turbocharger for high rpm Street-legal Group B-derived car; road and racing outputs are different
Volvo T6 Drive-E 2.0-litre four-cylinder; mechanical supercharger and turbocharger 302 HP; 295 lb-ft Supercharging supported low-speed response while turbocharging supplied higher-speed output Cited Volvo specification is model- and year-dependent
Volvo V60 T6 AWD 1,969cc four-cylinder; supercharged and turbocharged 1,969cc displacement documented; output varies by specification Mechanical twincharging in the combustion engine 2021 Volvo Canada model specification

The figures in the table are manufacturer-published specifications, not a single standardized comparison test. Volkswagen’s 2006 Golf GT documentation lists 125 kW/170 PS, while Volkswagen’s 2011 Jetta material lists 118 kW/160 PS and 240 Nm. Volkswagen’s Jetta powertrain presentation also describes the belt-driven supercharger and the transition to turbocharger operation at approximately 3,500 rpm.

Did the VW 1.4 TSI have both a turbocharger and supercharger?

Yes. Specific Volkswagen 1.4 TSI Twincharger versions used both a turbocharger and a mechanically driven supercharger. The verified applications in the supplied factory material include the Golf GT, Jetta, Beetle Cabriolet, and Scirocco.

The Jetta version produced 118 kW/160 PS and 240 Nm. Volkswagen described the Roots-type supercharger as mechanically belt-driven and explained that the supercharger and turbocharger could operate in series during the transition before the turbocharger assumed the main charging role. The exact engine code, calibration, transmission, and availability varied by model and market, so the “1.4 TSI” badge alone is not sufficient to identify every component on every car.

The Beetle Cabriolet used the same broad Twincharger concept and was documented at 118 kW/160 PS, with 240 Nm available from 1,500 to 4,500 rpm. Volkswagen’s Beetle Cabriolet engine information supports that application.

The Scirocco 1.4 TSI was also both turbocharged and supercharged. Volkswagen described its belt-driven Roots-principle supercharger, magnetic clutch, turbocharger, and 118 kW/160 PS output in its Scirocco engine and transmission material.

Owners researching one of these cars should use a model- and engine-specific reference rather than a generic forced-induction guide. A Volkswagen Golf 1.4 TSI repair manual can be a useful starting point for understanding model-specific belts, compressor control, turbocharger routing, bypass hardware, and engine-management systems, but compatibility still depends on model year, engine code, transmission, market, and vehicle configuration.

Was the Nissan March Super Turbo really turbocharged and supercharged?

Yes. Nissan’s 1990 March Super Turbo, internally designated EK10, used a 930cc MA09ERT four-cylinder engine with both a turbocharger and supercharger. Nissan lists 81 kW/110 PS and 130 Nm for the compact Japanese-market car.

The March is important because it placed a twincharging system in a very small engine and lightweight compact-car package. Nissan’s heritage archive describes the model as follows: “This March Super Turbo was the only commercially available car in Japan to have this kind of twin charging engine.” That statement should be understood as Nissan’s historical description of the Japanese market and period, not as a timeless worldwide production census. Nissan’s March Super Turbo Heritage Collection entry documents the engine and output figures.

The March Super Turbo is now primarily a historical, enthusiast, and restoration subject. Parts supply, workshop information, and vehicle specifications can be especially dependent on the Japanese-market model and exact configuration.

How did the Lancia Delta S4 use both compressors?

The street-legal Lancia Delta S4 used a 1,759cc four-cylinder engine with a volumetric compressor for low-rpm assistance and a turbocharger for high-rpm operation. The arrangement was derived from Lancia’s Group B rally program and was unusually advanced for a road car of its era.

Stellantis describes the Delta S4 as having a “one-of-a-kind twincharging system.” The road version produced 250 HP, while the racing version produced nearly 500 HP; those figures describe different versions and must not be presented as though one road car made both outputs. Stellantis’ historical Lancia material provides the displacement and separate road-versus-racing figures.

The Delta S4 is best understood as a historically significant rally-derived car rather than a normal modern ownership option. Rarity, specialized systems, and parts availability matter as much as the headline power figure when evaluating one.

Which Volvo models use a turbocharger and supercharger together?

Volvo’s T6 and T8 Drive-E powertrains are major modern examples of mechanical twincharging. Volvo described the T6 Drive-E as a 2.0-litre four-cylinder using both supercharging and turbocharging to combine low-speed response with the output expected from a larger engine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In the cited Volvo Cars US specification, the T6 Drive-E produced 302 HP and 295 lb-ft. Volvo’s powertrain engineering statement says: “The T6 Drive-E uses of both supercharging and turbocharging, delivering a lively, compelling result.” The wording is reproduced as published by Volvo. Volvo’s T6 Drive-E press material supports the configuration and figures.

The 2021 V60 specifications identify both the V60 T6 AWD and V60 T8 Twin Engine as using 1,969cc four-cylinder engines described as supercharged and turbocharged. The T8 adds electric hybrid propulsion to the twincharged gasoline engine. That means a V60 T8 can combine a mechanical supercharger, an exhaust-driven turbocharger, an electric motor, and a battery system in one powertrain. “Twin Engine” is Volvo’s hybrid branding and is not another name for twincharging. Volvo Cars Canada’s 2021 V60 specifications document the cited displacement and induction description.

Badge names are not enough to establish identical hardware across every Volvo. T6 and T8 equipment, outputs, and availability can vary by model year and market, so a specific car should be checked by VIN, engine code, and factory specification.

Are there modern cars with an electric supercharger and turbocharger?

Yes. Genesis provides a modern interpretation in which a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 is supplemented by a 48V electric supercharger. The Genesis GV80 Coupe and G90 are documented examples of turbocharging combined with electrically driven supercharging.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Genesis reports up to 409 horsepower and 405 lb-ft for the cited 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 with 48V e-supercharger. The electric compressor is not belt-driven from the crankshaft, so this arrangement should be labeled “turbocharger plus electric supercharger,” not treated as mechanically identical to the Volkswagen, Nissan, Lancia, or Volvo systems. Genesis’ performance engineering information describes the 48V e-supercharger and its pairing with the twin-turbo V6.

Arrangement Supercharger drive Example What it means
Mechanical twincharging Belt-driven or mechanically driven compressor VW 1.4 TSI, Nissan March Super Turbo, Lancia Delta S4, Volvo T6/T8 The engine mechanically drives the supercharger, while exhaust gas drives the turbocharger
Turbocharger plus electric supercharger 48V electrical system Genesis GV80 Coupe and G90 An electric compressor supplements a twin-turbo V6 and is not the same hardware as a belt-driven supercharger
Twin-turbocharging only No supercharger Any engine documented only as twin-turbo Does not meet the definition of a car with both turbocharging and supercharging

Genesis’ current product documentation identifies the GV80 Coupe as using a 3.5L twin-turbo V6 with a 48V e-supercharger, and Genesis documentation identifies the same basic arrangement for the 2026 G90. Availability and specifications are market- and model-year-specific; the cited pages should not be used to generalize to every Genesis V6. See the 2026 Genesis GV80 Coupe model page and Genesis G90 vehicle documentation.

What is the difference between twincharging and twin-turbocharging?

Twincharging means one engine uses a turbocharger and a supercharger. Twin-turbocharging means one engine uses two turbochargers. A twin-turbo engine can improve response or airflow distribution, but it is not a twincharged engine unless a separate supercharger is also documented.

The distinction matters when identifying cars from specifications, advertisements, or engine badges. “Twincharged,” “Twincharger,” and “turbocharged and supercharged” indicate the two different compressor types described here. “Twin-turbo” alone indicates two turbochargers and should not be added to a list of cars with both systems.

What are the advantages and trade-offs of twincharging?

Twincharging is intended to broaden the useful power band. A supercharger can provide immediate low-speed assistance, while a turbocharger can supply substantial airflow at higher engine speed without relying solely on a mechanically driven compressor.

  • Low-speed response: a supercharger can provide boost before a turbocharger has developed significant exhaust energy.
  • Transition control: the compressors may overlap or operate in series while the engine moves from low-speed supercharger assistance to turbocharger-led operation.
  • High-speed airflow: the turbocharger can become the main charging device at higher engine speeds.
  • Packaging and control complexity: the system can require a belt drive, magnetic clutch, bypass valves, turbocharger plumbing, engine-management calibration, additional cooling, and—in electric systems—48V hardware.
  • Service specificity: correct diagnosis depends on the precise engine code and control strategy rather than on the vehicle badge alone.

The supplied research does not establish an independent reliability ranking, universal fuel-economy advantage, comparative road-test result, or maintenance-cost winner among these systems. The practical service burden varies by design, age, condition, market, and parts availability.

How should you identify a factory twincharged car?

  1. Confirm both devices in factory documentation. Look for explicit wording such as “turbocharged and supercharged,” not merely “high-output,” “Twin Engine,” or “twin-turbo.”
  2. Verify the engine code and model year. The same badge can cover different engines or specifications in different markets.
  3. Determine the supercharger type. Establish whether the compressor is belt-driven, volumetric/mechanical, or electrically driven.
  4. Separate road and competition specifications. The Lancia Delta S4’s 250 HP road figure and nearly 500 HP racing figure are not interchangeable.
  5. Check the complete induction system before buying parts. Belts, clutches, bypass valves, turbocharger routing, cooling components, and electrical hardware can be model-specific.

For a used Volkswagen, Nissan, Volvo, or other twincharged car, a model-specific workshop reference is more useful than a generic turbocharger or supercharger guide. A generic performance part should never be assumed to fit a factory twincharged system without checking the engine code, model year, transmission, market, and control hardware.

Which cars are the strongest verified answers?

The Volkswagen Golf GT 1.4 TSI is the best-known mass-market answer, and Volkswagen’s Twincharger also appeared in the Jetta, Beetle Cabriolet, and Scirocco. The Nissan March Super Turbo is the standout small-engine Japanese example, while the Lancia Delta S4 is the most extreme rally-derived historical example. Volvo T6 and T8 Drive-E cars demonstrate later mechanical twincharging in premium production cars. Genesis GV80 Coupe and G90 models represent the newer turbocharger-plus-electric-supercharger interpretation.
