Car Maintenance Tips in Dubai: A Practical Year-Round Checklist

Use this Dubai-specific car maintenance checklist to inspect tyres, fluids, brakes, lights and air conditioning, prepare for heat and dust, and understand how annual RTA inspection fits into year-round upkeep.

Dubai’s heat, humidity and dust make a disciplined maintenance routine more important than waiting for a warning light. Start with a quick visual check before each journey, perform the fuller inspection every week, and follow your vehicle manufacturer’s manual for the correct tyre pressure, fluid procedures and service intervals. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) recommends this approach while treating annual inspection for registration renewal as a separate obligation.

The checks below identify problems early; they do not replace a qualified workshop. Stop driving and arrange professional diagnosis for a brake fault, damaged tyre, active leak, overheating or a persistent warning light.

Why Dubai conditions change your maintenance routine

High temperatures and humidity place extra demands on the cooling system, air-conditioning system and tyres. Heat can increase tyre pressure, accelerate fluid deterioration and expose weak hoses, belts, batteries or electrical connections. Fine dust reduces visibility, contaminates filters and can settle around lights and cooling components. RTA’s summer guidance therefore emphasizes tyre condition, fluids, brakes, cooling performance, visibility and leaks rather than a single annual check.

Use the owner’s manual as the controlling reference for your particular engine, transmission and tyre specification. Vehicle designs differ: some have electronic oil-level displays, sealed transmissions or different coolant reservoirs, and the correct inspection procedure is not universal.

RTA’s June 10, 2026 summer release recommends a quick visual inspection before each journey. Read the current advice at RTA’s summer tyre-maintenance and inspection campaign.

Before every drive: a two-minute visual and functional check

Do this walk-around particularly before a long trip, after the car has been parked for several hours, or when temperatures are extreme. Do not open a hot cooling system.

  1. Look at the tyres. Check for a visibly low tyre, bulge, cut, exposed cord, nail or uneven wear. A tyre that looks damaged needs professional assessment, even if it still holds air.
  2. Look underneath. Fresh oil, coolant or water in an unusual place can indicate a leak. Air-conditioning condensation may be clear water, but an unexplained coloured or oily fluid is not something to diagnose by guesswork.
  3. Check the engine oil and coolant levels safely. Use the manual’s procedure and level markings. Never remove a coolant cap while the engine or system is hot; wait for a qualified professional if the level or condition cannot be checked safely.
  4. Test the brakes at low speed. A soft or sinking pedal, grinding, pulling, vibration or a brake warning light requires prompt workshop inspection.
  5. Confirm cooling. The air conditioner should cool effectively and consistently. Poor cooling can be an air-conditioning fault, a blocked condenser or a symptom of a wider cooling problem.
  6. Clear your view. Clean the windscreen, rear glass, mirrors, headlights, tail-lights and indicators. Make sure wipers clear water and dust without leaving opaque bands.
  7. Notice warning lights. A light that remains on after the normal start-up check, flashes, or appears with a change in vehicle behaviour should be diagnosed rather than reset.

These checks are consistent with the RTA’s published summer recommendations for oil, coolant, tyre pressure and condition, leaks, brakes, air-conditioning and visibility.

The weekly vehicle check RTA recommends

Set aside about 15 minutes once a week, with the vehicle parked safely and the tyres cold. The RTA driving handbook’s list is a useful baseline; your manual may add checks or specify a different method.

Area What to check What requires a professional
Tyres and spare Cold pressure, tread, sidewalls, valve caps, spare-wheel inflation and wheel-changing tools Puncture repair, sidewall damage, persistent pressure loss, alignment or balancing
Lights and signals Headlights, brake lights, indicators, hazard lights, reverse lights and number-plate illumination Electrical faults, intermittent operation or wiring damage
Engine oil Level and visible condition using the manual’s dipstick or electronic procedure Low level that returns, milky oil, metal particles or an oil leak
Coolant Level in the marked reservoir when the system is cold; signs of stains or leaks Any pressure-system repair, overheating or inability to check safely
Brake fluid Reservoir level and warning signs, following the manual Low or falling level, contaminated fluid, leaks or any brake symptom
Automatic-transmission fluid Only if your vehicle provides a specified checking procedure Do not improvise on sealed or electronically monitored systems
Glass, mirrors and wipers Cracks, chips, clean surfaces, washer spray and blade condition Cracks in the driver’s view, failed washer pump or damaged mounting
Horn and seat belts Horn operation, belt latching and visible webbing damage Any restraint-system or airbag warning
Battery area Warning signs such as corrosion, swelling, loose terminals or starting changes Testing, charging or replacement when the battery or cables are unsafe to handle

The checklist is adapted from RTA’s official “Drive Safely in Dubai” handbook. It specifically says to check tyre pressure when tyres are cold and to consult the vehicle manual for fluid locations and procedures.

Tyre pressure, tread and damage

Set pressure from the vehicle specification

Use the pressure shown on your vehicle’s placard or in its manual, not the maximum pressure moulded into the tyre sidewall. Check before driving, when all tyres are cold; driving heats the air and produces a misleadingly high reading. Recheck after a significant temperature change, a long drive, a puncture repair or a new tyre.

A portable digital pressure gauge is a useful optional tool. It measures pressure only; it does not tell you the correct specification, identify internal tyre damage or replace an inspection. Compare gauges by readable units, ease of use and compatibility with your valve. Keep the manufacturer’s specification beside the gauge so a convenient tool does not become a source of incorrect inflation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect tread and sidewalls

Look across the whole tread for uneven wear, embedded objects, cracks and exposed cords. Check both sidewalls for bulges or cuts. Uneven wear can indicate alignment, suspension or inflation problems, so replacing a tyre without finding the cause may repeat the failure.

The RTA handbook gives 1.5 mm as the minimum tread depth for safe tyres. The handbook’s publication year was not stated in the result reviewed, and this figure is presented as safe-driving guidance rather than a confirmed current legal threshold. Verify the applicable UAE rule before treating 1.5 mm as a legal limit. See the handbook for the original guidance.

When a tyre should not be driven on

  • A visible bulge, deep cut, exposed cord or sidewall separation.
  • Rapid or repeated pressure loss.
  • A tyre that has been driven while flat or severely underinflated.
  • Severe vibration, pulling or a new thumping noise.

Use the spare or roadside assistance according to your manual and have the affected wheel inspected. Do not rely on a pressure reading alone to clear structural damage.

Fluids and leaks: what you can check safely

Engine oil

Check oil on level ground using the method specified by the manufacturer; some vehicles require a short wait after shutting down, while others use an electronic display. The level must sit between the marked limits. Adding the wrong viscosity or overfilling can harm the engine, so confirm the exact oil specification first. A falling level, oil on the ground, blue exhaust smoke or a new engine-oil warning needs diagnosis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Coolant and overheating

Check the expansion reservoir only when the engine is cold, and use the correct coolant type and mixture specified in the manual. Never open a radiator or pressurized reservoir cap on a hot engine: escaping steam or coolant can cause severe burns. If the temperature gauge rises, a coolant warning appears, steam is visible or the air conditioner suddenly stops cooling with engine temperature increasing, stop in a safe place and arrange professional assistance.

Brake and transmission fluids

Brake-fluid level and appearance should be checked only as described in the manual. A low level may reflect pad wear or a leak, not simply a need to add fluid. Any soft pedal, leak or warning light takes priority over topping up. Automatic-transmission fluid may require a precise temperature, gear-selection and dipstick procedure; many vehicles provide no owner check at all. Do not add fluid based on a generic online instruction.

RTA’s handbook lists engine oil, coolant, brake fluid and automatic-transmission fluid among the weekly checks and directs drivers to the owner’s manual for locations and correct methods.

Brakes, battery, lights and air conditioning

Brakes

Heat and stop-and-go traffic can expose worn pads, overheated fluid or sticking components. Pay attention to pedal travel, stopping distance, steering pull, vibration, grinding and burning smells. A red brake warning light, fluid leak or change in pedal feel is a reason to stop driving except to move to a safe location.

  • Versatile Automotive Applications: Suitable for various automotive tasks, including trim adjustment, vent/dashboard maintenance, loosening/tightening screws, and interior disassembly.

Battery and starting system

High under-bonnet temperatures can be hard on batteries. Watch for slow cranking, clicking, dim lights or electrical resets. Swelling, a cracked case or heavy terminal corrosion should be handled by a technician; do not bridge terminals or charge a damaged battery without the correct equipment.

Lights, glass and wipers

Dust and glare make clean lenses and glass safety equipment, not cosmetic details. Check that all exterior lights work, the windscreen has no obstructive crack, mirrors are correctly adjusted and wipers remove water without smearing. Replace worn blades and keep washer fluid at the specified level.

Air conditioning

The AC should deliver stable cooling and airflow. Weak cooling, unusual noises, a musty smell or water inside the cabin can indicate problems ranging from filters to refrigerant or drainage. A professional should diagnose leaks and refrigerant-system faults; do not vent or mix refrigerants.

Driving through Dubai heat and dust

RTA advises shaded parking where possible to reduce heat exposure. Shade does not eliminate the need for checks, but it can reduce cabin and surface temperatures. Keep windows closed during dusty conditions, use the air conditioner and drive carefully. Reduce speed before changing lanes because dust can hide other vehicles, lane markings and road debris.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before entering a dusty area, ensure headlights, windscreen, mirrors and wipers are clean and functional. If visibility becomes inadequate, slow down, increase following distance and leave the road only where it is safe and lawful to do so. RTA’s safety guidance is available at RTA Safety Tips.

Know when a workshop is the right next step

Driver checks are for observation and simple measurements, not for dismantling safety or pressurized systems. Book a qualified workshop when you find a leak, damaged tyre, brake concern, battery fault, persistent warning light, poor AC performance, overheating or unusual vibration. Ask the workshop to explain the diagnosis, identify the failed component, state whether parts are original-equipment or alternative, and provide written parts and labour terms.

When comparing providers, consider whether they can handle the specific fault, their diagnostic scope, parts and warranty terms, location and recovery arrangements. No single garage is endorsed by RTA through the guidance cited here, and service quality, prices and guarantees must be verified independently.

Annual RTA inspection is not a substitute for maintenance

RTA says an annual vehicle inspection is required for ownership renewal, while drivers remain responsible for checking the vehicle throughout the year. The inspection requirement and a weekly walk-around serve different purposes: an inspection is a formal compliance process at a specified time, whereas routine checks can catch a failing tyre, leak or light before it becomes a safety issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The RTA Vehicle Technical Inspection service page describes appointments for specified registration, renewal and export cases and says vehicles must meet validity and general safety conditions. The page was marked updated 6 October 2026; requirements and appointment steps can change, so confirm the live page before booking.

RTA’s 2024 reminder about regular inspection and summer preparation is available at RTA’s vehicle-inspection guidance.

Build a maintenance record that helps diagnosis

Record the date, odometer reading, tyre pressures, fluid additions, warning lights, repairs and inspection results. Keep invoices and note the exact oil, coolant and transmission-fluid specifications. A simple log shows whether a pressure loss or fluid drop is recurring and gives a workshop useful history. Schedule manufacturer services by time and mileage, whichever the manual specifies; do not replace that schedule with an informal weekly check.

Safety that is part of maintenance

Never leave a child in a parked vehicle. In an RTA release dated 10 June 2026, Ahmed Al Khzaimy, Director of Traffic at RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, said: “Children must never be left in a vehicle under any circumstances, even for short periods.” The release explains that heat can build to fatal levels within minutes, even when the air-conditioning system is running. Read the statement in its original context at RTA’s June 2026 release.
