It depends on the exact Ford vehicle and recall. Find the open campaign using your vehicle identification number (VIN), read that campaign’s interim instructions, and follow any “do not drive” or “park outside” warning before moving the vehicle. A lighting recall for one Ford model does not establish driving guidance for another.
Arrange the specified repair promptly. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says manufacturer recall repairs are free. The remedy may be a software update, an inspection, or replacement of a lamp or module, so the recall number matters as much as the word “headlight.”

What to do before driving a Ford with an open lighting recall
An open recall is a notice that a safety or compliance defect may affect a particular vehicle population. It is not, by itself, a universal instruction to stop driving. The only reliable answer for your Ford is the instruction attached to its VIN-specific campaign.

Find the exact recall and its interim instructions
- Locate the VIN. It is normally shown on the driver’s-side dashboard at the windshield and on registration or insurance documents. Use the complete 17-character VIN, not just the model name.
- Check the vehicle. NHTSA’s recall service supports searches by VIN, license plate, or equipment; Ford also provides recall resources. The VIN-specific result identifies whether the campaign is open for that vehicle. Start with NHTSA’s consumer guidance at NHTSA’s recall-check instructions.
- Open the owner notice. Look for the recall number, affected lighting function, safety consequence, remedy, and any temporary operating instruction. A notice can permit limited driving, prohibit driving, or tell you to park outdoors; those directions are campaign-specific.
- Call a Ford dealer if anything is ambiguous. Quote the recall number and VIN. Ask whether the dealer wants the vehicle driven in, inspected first, or transported, and whether a particular light setting is required until the repair.
- Book the remedy promptly. NHTSA says manufacturer recall repairs at the manufacturer’s dealership are free. Keep the appointment confirmation and the repair order showing the campaign was completed.
Why “headlight recall” can mean very different risks
Ford lighting campaigns have covered lamps, software, control modules, and replacement parts. The following official notices illustrate why a generic internet answer can be misleading.

Use the notice’s driving branch, not the recall’s headline
If it says “do not drive”
Do not drive the vehicle to work, a parts store, or the dealership. Follow the notice’s contact, towing, and parking directions. A “do not drive” instruction is tied to the defect and the affected vehicle population; it overrides assumptions based on another Ford recall that permitted operation.

If it says “park outside”
Park exactly as directed, even if the vehicle appears to operate normally. “Park outside” is a specific precaution that can address a hazard while the vehicle is stationary. Ask the dealer how the vehicle should be moved for service.
If it permits driving with a condition
Follow the stated condition literally. For example, Ford’s 20C03 notice for certain 2018 F-150s said continued driving with the headlamp switch in Auto would avoid the daytime-running-lamp issue described in that campaign. That instruction does not transfer to another F-150 year, another lighting function, or another recall number.
If it says there is no stop-driving instruction
That wording means the manufacturer did not issue a stop-driving direction for that particular campaign. Ford’s 23C36, 23C26, and 24C04 letters each used such language for their specified vehicles. It does not mean every Ford with a lighting fault is safe to drive, nor does it cancel the need for a prompt repair.

If a lamp is visibly not working or your visibility is reduced
Do not treat the absence of a formal stop-driving sentence as permission to drive in conditions where you cannot see or be seen adequately. Contact the dealer and explain the actual symptom. Ask whether the vehicle should be transported rather than driven, especially for night, heavy rain, fog, or other low-visibility travel.
What the repair may involve
A lighting recall does not necessarily mean buying a bulb or headlamp assembly. The campaign may require:
- Software programming: A dealer updates a body-control, headlamp-control, or LED-module software package. Ford’s 20C03 and 23C36 notices use this type of remedy.
- Inspection: The dealer verifies whether the installed lamp meets the required specification. A compliant part may remain in service.
- Part replacement: The dealer replaces a noncompliant or overly bright lamp. Ford’s 23C26 and 24C04 notices describe inspection followed by replacement when necessary.
Because the cited remedies are dealer procedures, a consumer-purchased bulb, scan tool, or replacement housing cannot be assumed to resolve the recall. Ask the service department to identify the campaign on the repair order and to tell you what was updated, inspected, or replaced.

What “free recall repair” covers
NHTSA’s consumer guidance says manufacturer recall repairs are free. The free remedy is the corrective action specified by the campaign, such as programming, inspection, or replacement. It is not a promise that unrelated maintenance, damage, accessories, or a different lighting problem will be covered.
When booking, provide the VIN and recall number so the dealer can confirm parts, software, and appointment requirements. If the notice gives a temporary driving instruction, repeat it when scheduling. If the vehicle is subject to more than one open campaign, ask the dealer to check all of them and list each campaign separately on the paperwork.

- Eligibility: exact model, model year, production range, and VIN status.
- Lighting function: headlamp beam, daytime-running lamp, park/position lamp, dynamic-bending lamp, or replacement LED assembly.
- Defect mechanism: flicker, incorrect dimming, glare, excessive brightness, software direction, or another condition.
- Safety effect: reduced visibility, glare to other drivers, incorrect beam placement, or another consequence stated in the notice.
- Interim instruction: no driving, park outside, a specified switch setting, or no stop-driving instruction.
- Remedy: software update, inspection, replacement, or a combination.
Two campaigns can both contain the word “headlight” while requiring completely different decisions. Match all six items before using another owner’s experience as a guide.
What the official notices actually establish
Ford’s 23C36 owner letter for the specified 2022 F-150 states: “Ford has not issued instructions to stop driving your vehicle under this compliance recall.” The sentence is limited to that recall and vehicle population; it is not a blanket Ford policy for lighting recalls.
NHTSA’s consumer guidance states: “Follow any instructions from the automaker, including any ‘do not drive’ or ‘park outside’ warnings.” That is the controlling practical rule when the notice gives an interim direction. Questions about legality and insurance
The cited notices do not establish a universal rule that driving with any open lighting recall is illegal, and they do not answer every state or local equipment-law question. Whether a vehicle may legally operate can depend on the actual lamp condition and the jurisdiction. For those questions, check the applicable local rule and ask the dealer about the recall-specific instruction.
An open recall also does not tell you whether a vehicle is insured, roadworthy in every circumstance, or free of unrelated defects. Those are separate questions. The practical safety decision remains the same: identify the VIN-specific campaign, follow its interim directions, and obtain the specified repair.
A concise decision checklist
- Have I checked this exact VIN rather than searching only by “Ford headlight recall”?
- What is the recall number and which lamp or control system does it cover?
- Does the notice say “do not drive,” “park outside,” use a particular switch setting, or provide no stop-driving instruction?
- Is the observed symptom worse than the condition described in the notice?
- Has a Ford dealer confirmed whether the vehicle should be driven, inspected first, or transported?
- Is the recall remedy scheduled, and will the repair order identify the completed campaign?
If you cannot answer the interim-instruction question, pause and call the dealer before driving. A VIN-specific answer is safer than general advice based on a different Ford, year, or lighting defect.
