A separate Model 3/Model Y matter is described as an open investigation, not a recall. Check your vehicle by VIN rather than assuming it is covered by model name alone.
What the notices say—and which vehicles they cover
The notices concern different parts and failure mechanisms. Neither establishes that every Tesla, or every vehicle from the listed model years, experienced a wheel detachment.
| Matter | Vehicles and scope | Component and stated risk | Status and action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recall 23V-235, acknowledged April 6, 2023 | 422 potentially affected 2018–2019 Model 3 vehicles, according to NHTSA | Front suspension lateral-link fasteners may loosen, allowing a link to separate from the subframe. The resulting alignment change could cause instability and increase crash risk. | Recall. Tesla Service was to tighten or replace fasteners as necessary at no cost. It expanded earlier recall 21V-835. NHTSA recall acknowledgment |
| Recall 26V255, acknowledgment dated April 27, 2026 | 173 potentially affected 2024–2026 Cybertrucks equipped with 18-inch steel wheels, according to the notice | Cracking around brake-rotor stud holes may allow a stud to separate from the wheel hub, potentially causing loss of vehicle control and increasing crash risk. | Recall. Tesla Service was to replace front and rear brake rotors, hubs, and lug nuts free of charge. The notice is reproduced by AutoEvolution. Reproduced NHTSA acknowledgment |
| Preliminary Evaluation PE26006, reported opened July 29, 2026 | 2018–2020 Model 3 and 2021–2023 Model Y vehicles are named in a third-party investigation summary; it cites 156 complaints | The summary concerns reports of front lower lateral-link detachment. The complaint count is not a count of confirmed failures. | Investigation, not a recall. The summary says NHTSA is assessing cause, scope, and severity; it is a third-party account, not the official investigation file. Vehicle Recall investigation summary |
The counts are not interchangeable: the two recall figures are estimates of potentially affected vehicles, while 156 is a complaint count cited by a third-party summary. They cannot be added together or used to calculate a fleet-wide failure rate.
Why a suspension-link issue is not the same as a wheel detachment
Model 3 lateral-link fasteners
The 2023 Model 3 recall describes a front suspension lateral link that could separate from the subframe if its fasteners loosened. NHTSA said that separation could shift wheel alignment, cause instability, and increase crash risk. This is a suspension-component failure mechanism; the notice does not say that the wheel itself was shown to detach.

Cybertruck wheel studs and hubs
The 2026 Cybertruck notice describes a different mechanism: cracking around brake-rotor stud holes may allow a stud to separate from the wheel hub. Its stated consequence is possible loss of vehicle control and increased crash risk. The notice specifies Cybertrucks with 18-inch steel wheels, not all Cybertrucks.
The Model 3/Model Y investigation
A preliminary evaluation is a regulatory investigation, not a recall and not a determination that a defect exists. The available summary says the investigation is evaluating reports involving certain Model 3 and Model Y years; the underlying official file was not reviewed for that account. The reports should therefore not be described as confirmed failures or as proof that the vehicles listed all have a defect.

How to check whether your Tesla is affected
- Find the vehicle identification number (VIN). Use the VIN rather than model year or a headline to determine whether a specific recall applies.
- Enter it in NHTSA’s recall lookup or use Tesla’s recall information and vehicle check.
- If a recall appears for your vehicle, follow the manufacturer’s recall-service instructions and arrange the specified repair. The notices describe free Tesla Service remedies for the campaigns listed above.
- If a wheel, suspension component, or handling seems abnormal, contact Tesla Service or another qualified repair professional promptly. Do not treat a recall search as a diagnosis of a new symptom.
NHTSA says recalls do not expire. Tesla says recall service is free regardless of vehicle age or mileage. Do not substitute generic parts or DIY suspension or hub work for a vehicle-specific safety recall repair.

What these documents do not establish
- They do not show that all Teslas—or all vehicles in a named model year—are affected.
- The recall notices do not establish how often the described failures occur across the fleet.
- The 156 complaints in the investigation summary are not confirmed failures, and an investigation is not itself a recall.
- There is no basis in these notices for treating “wheels fly off” as a general Tesla condition.
