The CAKE Kalk AP is an electric off-road motorcycle developed with South Africa’s Southern African Wildlife College (SAWC) for conservation and anti-poaching patrols. Its pitch is operational: a quieter approach than a petrol bike and a way to reduce the challenge of transporting fuel into remote areas, with portable solar equipment intended to support charging in the field. Those are project goals and partner observations—not proof that the bike has increased arrests or reduced poaching.
What the CAKE Kalk AP is
CAKE describes the Kalk AP as a special edition of its Kalk electric off-road platform, developed with SAWC staff for ranger work. The college’s conservation training and field-research work gave the project a setting for ranger feedback and testing. CAKE says the first motorcycles were delivered to rangers working with the college’s research and development department. CAKE’s launch announcement and the Southern African Wildlife College provide the project context.
It is a purpose-built off-road motorcycle, not a general-purpose road bike. Whether it can be legally registered or ridden on public roads depends on local rules; the project materials do not establish licensing requirements for each jurisdiction.
Performance and equipment
CAKE’s US product page lists the following manufacturer specifications. They are not independent test results, and the published ride-time figure is an “up to” claim rather than a guaranteed patrol duration. CAKE’s US Kalk AP page

CAKE’s launch description also lists a removable battery, three ride modes, three braking modes, and 80-tooth rear and 12-tooth front sprockets. The company says it adjusted software for high temperatures and low-speed torque, specified robust front and rear suspension, and sealed the motor for harsh, dusty conditions. Its stated wheel setup is 18 x 1.85-inch rims with 3.5-inch Continental TKC80 tires on both wheels; CAKE says the arrangement was selected to disperse weight and reduce ground pressure in mud. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independently verified performance findings. CAKE’s launch announcement
Other described equipment includes a removable, clamp-on 2,100-lumen headlight and CAKE Connect functions for navigation, communication, and location identification. CAKE’s later deployment report also names Silva lighting and a first-aid kit developed with luggage manufacturer DB. CAKE’s deployment report Silva’s announcement
Why quiet operation and solar charging matter
A quieter approach
The project’s central rationale is that petrol motorcycles can be noisy during patrols. In CAKE’s delivery report, anti-poaching team leader Mfana Xaba said the team’s previous petrol bikes were loud, heavy, and expensive to keep running in the area; he described the CAKE bikes as quiet and said that could make it easier to approach poachers undetected. This is a named field user’s account reported by the manufacturer, not a controlled sound test: the sources do not quantify noise levels or detection distance. CAKE’s deployment report

Energy for remote patrols
Fuel can be difficult to move into remote patrol areas, sometimes requiring long-distance transport or helicopter support. The Kalk AP project pairs the motorcycles with Goal Zero portable solar panels and power stations to support charging away from the grid and conventional fuel supply. That makes charging logistics part of the concept, rather than an incidental accessory. The sources describe the project setup but do not give a complete operating-cost comparison with petrol motorcycles or establish how much fuel expense it saves. SAWC project information CAKE’s launch announcement
What the project does—and does not—show about poaching
The Kalk AP is a conservation tool intended to address specific patrol constraints: engine noise and the burden of supplying fuel. CAKE and its partners describe a development and field-use effort, and a ranger has reported a practical benefit from quieter operation. That is not the same as evidence that the motorcycle has reduced poaching overall.
- The project sources do not provide a controlled trial comparing electric and petrol patrol bikes.
- They do not report a measured change in apprehension rates or a quantified reduction in poaching.
- They do not publish a quantified lifetime-cost or fuel-savings analysis.
Accordingly, the defensible claim is that the bike is designed to make some patrol tasks quieter and less dependent on fuel deliveries—not that it has been proven to stop poaching or outperform petrol motorcycles on measured conservation outcomes.
