What Orange Highway Stripes Mean in California Work Zones

Orange highway stripes in California are an experimental work-zone cue, not a replacement for standard lines. Here’s what drivers should follow and what Caltrans is evaluating.

Orange stripes on California highways are an experimental work-zone marking meant to make the intended lane path easier to see—especially where traffic shifts or old lines leave confusing pavement scars. They are a visual guide, not a new statewide replacement for white and yellow lines. Follow the signs, cones, barriers, flaggers, and lane arrangement active at the site.

What do orange lines on California highways mean?

They are temporary contrast markings being tested in construction zones to help drivers identify the intended travel path. Caltrans says they may be especially useful where lanes shift or removed markings leave scars that can compete visually with the current route.

The markings are an experiment, not a permanent statewide system. Caltrans’ February 2026 research scope reports federal approval to continue experimentation and proposes up to six Caltrans sites in 2027, depending on construction schedules and project availability. That is a conditional plan, not a count of sites already installed or a final authorization for statewide use. Caltrans Division of Research, Innovation and System Information, Task 5019 scope (February 2026)

Are orange stripes replacing white and yellow lane lines?

No. Caltrans describes orange markings as a supplement to—not a substitute for—the standard white and yellow markings. Orange may add contrast in a work zone, but it does not cancel the location’s signs or other active traffic controls.

Do I follow the orange or white line in a construction zone?

Do not decide your route from stripe color alone. Follow the temporary traffic controls in place: posted signs, cones, barriers, flaggers, and the open-lane arrangement. If markings appear to conflict or the path is unclear, slow down and proceed cautiously rather than making a sudden lane change.

Where has California tested orange contrast striping?

Caltrans’ November 2024 research note describes an evaluation on the I-5 North Coast Corridor construction project in San Diego County. The project was described as about 14 miles one way. Units 1, 2, and 3 used standard temporary white striping; Unit 4 was planned to use orange contrast from Palomar Airport Road to SR 78 for about 4.1 miles in each direction.

The 2024 note describes a study design, not a finding that the stripes worked. It set out to compare motorists’ lane position and speed in areas with white versus orange delineation, and to examine visibility, durability, and implications for connected and automated vehicles. The note also says it is not a standard, specification, or regulation. Caltrans Division of Research, Innovation and System Information, Task 3836 research note (November 2024)

What is the newer Caltrans study intended to measure?

The February 2026 Task 5019 scope describes a broader planned evaluation. It calls for assessing how well the orange color and retroreflectivity are retained, as well as the marking pattern, while keeping the orange markings supplementary to white and yellow lines. The scope also describes developing a request for interim approval; it does not establish that a final FHWA decision has been made.

Caltrans document Location and scale What it describes What it does not establish
Task 3836 research note, November 2024 I-5 North Coast Corridor in San Diego County; Unit 4 planned for about 4.1 miles in each direction A comparison design focused on lane position and speed, with visibility and durability among the study objectives A completed safety finding or statewide rollout
Task 5019 scope, February 2026 Up to six planned Caltrans sites in 2027, conditional on construction cycles and project availability Continued experimentation, including evaluation of color and retroreflectivity retention and marking pattern Completed installation at six sites, a final statewide system, or a final FHWA decision

Caltrans’ 2022–23 efficiencies report provides earlier context: District 11 had implemented orange lane striping in I-5 construction zones as a developing approach intended to alert motorists and distinguish the correct travel path, and described the practice as being tested. That historical reference should not be read as the current statewide deployment count. Caltrans 2022–23 efficiencies report

Are orange highway stripes proven to make driving safer?

The Caltrans documents described here set out research objectives and planned measurement; they do not report a completed California-wide result showing reduced crashes or changed driver behavior. The aim is to make a safe, intended lane path more legible, but the existence of a study or planned deployment is not proof of a safety benefit.

How should you drive through a work zone?

Use the work-zone controls as your instructions, and treat pavement markings as one part of the guidance. Caltrans recommends that drivers:

  • Obey signs and the posted speed limit; slow down and proceed cautiously whenever highway-work signs are present, even if no reduced speed limit is posted.
  • Stay alert for workers, lane shifts, and changing traffic patterns. Avoid unnecessary lane changes and mobile-phone use.
  • Leave ample following distance and merge when directed.
  • Do not enter a closed lane because no workers are visible. A closure may remain for work you cannot see, such as work beneath a bridge or concrete curing.
  • Be especially alert at night and anticipate delays.

Caltrans’ guidance also says that when approaching a stopped emergency or maintenance vehicle displaying flashing amber lights, drivers must move over a lane if it is safe to do so, or slow down if moving over safely is not possible. Caltrans Work Zone Safety Caltrans traffic operations FAQ
