BYD EV Charging Speed: What “400 km in 5 Minutes” Really Means

BYD says compatible Han L vehicles can add a claimed 400 km of range in five minutes. Here is what the 1 MW figure means, which cars support it, and where the infrastructure is available.

BYD says a compatible Han L can add up to a claimed 400 km of range in five minutes using its Super e-Platform, Flash Charging Battery, and compatible megawatt charging infrastructure. The headline refers to range added—not necessarily a full battery—and it does not apply to every BYD vehicle or ordinary home charger.

The 2025 system was presented with a 1,000-volt architecture, 1,000 amps of current, a 10C charging capability, and a 1 MW peak vehicle charging rate. BYD’s newer 2026 announcement uses a different measure: 10% to 70% in five minutes and 10% to 97% in nine minutes.

What BYD actually claims

BYD’s five-minute figure is a range-added claim, not a promise that an EV reaches a full battery in five minutes. In its March 2025 Super e-Platform announcement, BYD said a compatible Han L fitted with its Flash Charging Battery could gain up to a claimed 400 km of driving range in five minutes when connected to compatible megawatt Flash Charging infrastructure.

BYD also identified the Han L and Tang L as the first vehicles built on the Super e-Platform. The Han L was the specific vehicle associated with the 400-km-in-five-minutes statement. This does not mean every BYD electric car—or every BYD plug-in hybrid—can accept 1 MW of charging power.

Accurate wording: “BYD says compatible Han L vehicles can add up to a claimed 400 km of range in five minutes with compatible megawatt Flash Charging infrastructure.”

That qualification matters because the result depends on the vehicle’s battery and charging hardware, the charger’s output, the battery’s temperature and starting state of charge, the charging curve, local electrical conditions, and the range standard used. The published figure is an official BYD specification claim, not a broad independent test result covering every vehicle and charging condition.

BYD’s 2025 Super e-Platform figures

The Super e-Platform was announced by BYD on March 17, 2025, with the company’s announcement published on March 18. BYD presented it as a passenger-car architecture built around an all-domain 1,000-volt electrical system.

Specification BYD’s published 2025 figure
Peak vehicle charging power 1 MW, or 1,000 kW
Charging voltage 1,000 V
Charging current 1,000 A
Battery charge-rate capability 10C
Claimed peak replenishment rate Approximately 2 km of range per second
Headline result Up to 400 km of claimed range added in five minutes for the Han L with the Flash Charging Battery

BYD said the platform also included a 30,000-rpm motor and new automotive-grade silicon-carbide power chips. Those components are part of the wider high-voltage and high-efficiency architecture; the five-minute charging result is not produced by the motor alone.

Why 1,000 volts and 1,000 amps equal 1 MW

In the simplest electrical-power relationship, voltage multiplied by current gives power:

1,000 V × 1,000 A = 1,000,000 W = 1 MW

That is the idealized reason BYD’s 1,000-volt, 1,000-amp figures match its 1-megawatt headline. A higher voltage helps deliver substantial power without requiring all of the increase to come from even greater current. However, the calculation describes peak electrical power; it does not mean the battery receives a constant 1 MW for the entire session.

For perspective, sustaining 1 MW for five minutes would represent about 83.3 kWh of energy before charging losses. In practice, charging power normally changes as the battery fills, and the vehicle, charger, cable, cooling system, and battery-management software all impose limits. The advertised 400 km also depends on how much energy the vehicle uses per kilometre under the applicable test or operating assumptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The “2 km per second” statement is likewise a peak replenishment rate. Adding 400 km over five minutes works out to an average of about 1.33 km per second, so the two figures are not interchangeable: a peak rate can be higher than the average rate over the complete five-minute interval.

What does 10C mean?

A battery’s C-rate expresses charging power relative to its capacity. A 10C charging rate means the battery is designed to accept charging at a rate equivalent to ten times its nominal capacity under the relevant conditions. In a simplified, ideal calculation, 10C would represent a full-equivalent charge in around six minutes if that rate could be sustained continuously.

Real charging sessions do not work that way. Battery temperature, cell voltage, state of charge, thermal limits, cell chemistry, and the charging curve determine how long a high rate can be maintained. The 10C figure therefore indicates an unusually high charge-rate capability; it is not a guarantee of a flat 10C charging curve from empty to full.

BYD described the Flash Charging Battery as having a design intended to reduce internal resistance. Lower resistance can help manage heat and power losses during high-current charging, but it does not remove the need for liquid cooling, carefully controlled software, specialized connectors, or a charger capable of supplying the power.

The 2026 claim is different from the 2025 claim

In March 2026, BYD announced a second-generation Blade Battery and a newer FLASH Charging system. This announcement used a more specific state-of-charge measurement rather than the 2025 range-added headline:

  • 10% to 70% in five minutes
  • 10% to 97% in nine minutes

BYD also described a single-gun charging pile capable of up to 1,500 kW. The system uses fast-discharge energy storage to help reduce the amount of instantaneous grid capacity required at the site.

2025 Super e-Platform claim 2026 second-generation claim
Vehicle and battery context Han L and Tang L launch vehicles with the Flash Charging Battery Second-generation Blade Battery and newer FLASH Charging technology
How the result is expressed Up to 400 km of claimed range added in five minutes 10%–70% in five minutes and 10%–97% in nine minutes
Vehicle or charger figures 1,000 V, 1,000 A, 10C, and 1 MW vehicle peak Up to 1,500 kW from a single-gun charging pile
China infrastructure target More than 4,000 megawatt charging stations planned 20,000 FLASH Charging stations targeted by the end of 2026

These are related generations and should not be presented as one test result. The 2025 statement describes how much driving range a launch vehicle could add. The 2026 statement describes a defined battery state-of-charge window. Neither should be casually substituted for the other.

Which BYD vehicles can use the 400-km charging claim?

The claim is tied to the Super e-Platform and its Flash Charging Battery. BYD named the Han L and Tang L as the first vehicles using that platform, with the Han L specifically identified in the 400-km claim.

Older BYD models based on e-Platform 3.0 should not be assumed to support megawatt charging. Plug-in hybrids should not be assumed to support it either. Before relying on the headline, check the exact model, battery version, market specification, and charging limits—not merely the brand or model family.

The charger is just as important as the car

A vehicle capable of accepting 1 MW cannot create that power at a conventional charging station. BYD said its liquid-cooled megawatt charging terminal could reach a maximum output of 1,360 kW, giving the site more headroom than the 1,000-kW vehicle headline. The terminal still has to manage heat, current, cable handling, safety systems, grid interaction, and communication with the vehicle.

This is specialized public infrastructure. A consumer EV charging cable, portable charging lead, or ordinary Level 2 home EV charger belongs to a completely different equipment class. Such equipment can be useful for overnight charging, but it cannot reproduce BYD’s 1,000-kW or 1,500-kW Flash Charging performance. Buying a home charger is therefore not a solution to the five-minute, 400-km claim.

The 2026 system’s battery-buffered charging approach illustrates the infrastructure challenge. A site may briefly deliver very high power to a vehicle by combining grid supply with an energy-storage system, reducing the need to size the local grid connection for the full instantaneous peak. That is one reason this is a story about megawatt EV charging infrastructure as much as it is about battery technology.

How widely is BYD Flash Charging available?

China

Availability has been developing in stages:

  • In March 2025, BYD said it planned to build more than 4,000 megawatt charging stations in China.
  • In June 2025, BYD said it had more than 500 self-built megawatt charging stations across more than 200 Chinese core cities. It also announced cooperation with Xiaojü Charging and Xindietu to build an additional 15,000 charging piles.
  • In March 2026, BYD announced its “Flash Charging China” strategy and a target of 20,000 FLASH Charging stations in China by the end of 2026, including urban and highway locations.
  • By June 2026, BYD said it had built more than 6,100 Flash Charging stations and was still targeting 20,000 by the end of the year.

BYD also described a strategic cooperation framework with Sinopec covering charging-network construction, energy services, vehicle services, and related supply-chain activity. Those figures describe BYD’s reported deployments and targets; they do not mean every station offers every vehicle the same power at every moment.

Europe

At IAA Mobility 2025, BYD presented 1,000-kW Flash Charging demonstrations and again said the system could add approximately 400 km of range in five minutes. Its European messaging described rollout activity in 2026 rather than treating the technology as universally available across the continent.

BYD Germany separately announced a plan to install 300 Mega Flash Chargers by the end of 2026, primarily at German BYD dealer locations. That is a deployment plan, not confirmation that all 300 chargers were operational when the plan was announced.

United States

The researched BYD announcements establish Chinese deployment and European rollout plans, but they do not establish a nationwide U.S. consumer network or confirm U.S.-market availability of the Han L or Tang L. U.S. readers should not assume that a BYD vehicle or a compatible megawatt charger can be purchased or used locally based on the global headline alone.

What can reduce the real-world charging result?

Even a compatible vehicle at a compatible station may not deliver the advertised maximum every time. Important variables include:

  • Starting state of charge: The 2025 range claim does not specify the same SOC window that BYD provided for the 2026 claim. Charging power often tapers as the battery approaches a high state of charge.
  • Battery temperature: A cold or overheated battery may limit power until it reaches a suitable temperature range.
  • Vehicle configuration: Battery size, software version, production generation, wheel or trim configuration, and regional specification can affect the range added.
  • Station output: The charger may be sharing capacity, operating below its rated peak, or limited by its cooling and electrical systems.
  • Connector and cable limits: High current requires specialized hardware and thermal monitoring.
  • Grid and site conditions: Local electrical capacity, energy-storage state, and other site loads can affect available output.
  • Range-test standard: Claimed kilometres are not the same as a guaranteed distance under highway speeds, cold weather, heavy loads, or aggressive driving.

For those reasons, “400 km in five minutes” should be read as the best-case headline for a defined vehicle-and-charger system, not as a universal travel guarantee.

How to assess the claim before relying on it

  1. Identify the exact car. Confirm that it is a Super e-Platform or other explicitly compatible Flash Charging model. Do not rely on the BYD name alone.
  2. Check the vehicle’s maximum charging power. A station rated at 1,000 kW or 1,500 kW cannot make a vehicle accept more power than its onboard system allows.
  3. Confirm the station’s actual specification. Look for the compatible connector, single-gun output, cooling capability, and whether the charger is operational rather than merely announced.
  4. Check the market and route. China, Europe, and the United States have different vehicle availability, charging networks, standards, and rollout schedules.
  5. Allow for charging-curve variation. The advertised peak may last only part of the session, particularly as the battery approaches a high state of charge.
  6. Use the appropriate range expectation. Treat BYD’s number as a claimed range addition under stated conditions, not as a promise of the distance you will drive in every situation.

Bottom line: is BYD’s 400-km claim real?

Yes—BYD’s “400 km in five minutes” figure is a real official claim associated with the 2025 Super e-Platform, Flash Charging Battery, and launch vehicles such as the Han L. But it is conditional in three essential ways: the car must be compatible, the charging terminal must be capable of megawatt output, and the operating conditions must support the claimed performance.

It does not mean all BYD EVs charge that quickly, that the battery becomes full in five minutes, or that a home charger can deliver the same result. BYD’s 2026 figures—10% to 70% in five minutes and 10% to 97% in nine minutes—describe a newer system using a different state-of-charge measurement. China has the most substantial reported deployment, while European availability is being rolled out and broad U.S. availability is not established by the researched announcements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can every BYD EV charge 400 km in five minutes?

No. BYD tied the 400-km-in-five-minutes statement to compatible Super e-Platform vehicles, specifically identifying the Han L and Tang L as the first models. Older e-Platform 3.0 vehicles and BYD plug-in hybrids should not be assumed to support megawatt charging.

Can a home charger reproduce BYD’s five-minute charging speed?

No. A home EV charger, portable charging cable, or Level 2 charger operates in a different power class. BYD’s result requires a compatible vehicle and specialized public infrastructure capable of approximately 1,000 kW or more.

Is BYD’s 2026 charging claim the same as 400 km in five minutes?

No. The 2025 claim describes up to 400 km of range added in five minutes. The 2026 announcement describes a newer system reaching 10% to 70% in five minutes and 10% to 97% in nine minutes. They use different generations and measurement frames.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where can BYD’s megawatt Flash Charging be used?

China has the most substantial reported deployment. BYD reported more than 6,100 Flash Charging stations by June 2026 and targeted 20,000 in China by the end of 2026. Europe was in a 2026 rollout phase, including a German plan for 300 Mega Flash Chargers. The researched announcements do not establish broad U.S. consumer availability.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: BYD’s 400-km-in-five-minutes statement is a manufacturer claim for compatible Super e-Platform vehicles—especially the Han L—using specialized megawatt Flash Charging infrastructure. It is not a universal BYD specification, a full-charge promise, or a result that ordinary home equipment can reproduce.
