That last point matters when shopping dealer inventory. An XLE badge does not prove that the vehicle has captain’s chairs. Check the window sticker or ask for the seating configuration specifically.

The QX80 can otherwise be configured for seven or eight passengers. The PURE, LUXE, and SPORT trims list an available split-bench package, so captain’s chairs are concentrated in the higher-end equipment levels. Confirm the seating layout before comparing prices between QX80 listings.

8. 2026 Mazda CX-90: best for driving enjoyment
The CX-90 is the choice for drivers who want a more responsive, rear-drive-based midsize SUV rather than the softest possible family vehicle. Captain’s chairs are available on the 3.3 Turbo Premium Sport and 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus trims.

Mazda lists 2026 starting MSRPs of $39,300 for the 3.3 Turbo Select and $50,270 for the 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus, but those prices should not be treated as proof of seating equipment. Check the engine and trim combination.
9. 2026 Buick Enclave: best standard captain-chair setup
The Enclave simplifies the shopping process: Consumer Reports reports that all 2026 Enclave trims have standard second-row captain’s chairs and a seven-passenger layout. You do not have to search through several packages to find the desired seating arrangement.
The tradeoff is that its third row is less suitable for adults than the second row. It works well for children and occasional passengers, but adults who regularly use all three rows should sit in the back before buying.

Captain’s chairs are not universally better. They trade one passenger position for access and separation.

A center walkway is also different from a removable center seat. On the CX-90, for example, Mazda describes the arrangement as a center walk-through. It cannot be converted into an eight-passenger seat when needed.
What to check before buying
- Verify the exact trim and package. Look for “second-row captain’s chairs,” “second-row buckets,” or “seven-passenger seating” on the window sticker. Do not rely on the model name alone.
- Count your regular passengers. If three people or three child restraints need to occupy row two, a bench may be the better choice.
- Test the third-row access with car seats installed. A one-touch or tip-and-slide feature may not work while a fixed child restraint is attached.
- Check LATCH anchors and seat-belt geometry. Bring the actual car seats to the dealership and install them. NHTSA recommends confirming that a child seat fits the vehicle and suits the child’s age, height, and weight.
- Inspect powered-seat safety. Never operate a folding, reclining, sliding, or tilting seat with a child, pet, cargo, or other obstruction in its path. Mazda’s CX-90 manual specifically warns against operating the second-row mechanism with a child seated in the restraint.
- Run the VIN for recalls. This is especially important for 2026 Palisade Limited and Calligraphy models because of the power-seat contact-detection recall.
How to identify captain’s chairs in a listing
Manufacturers and dealers do not use one consistent term. “Captain’s chairs,” “captain’s seats,” and “second-row bucket seats” generally describe two separate second-row seats, but the folding, sliding, heating, ventilation, and armrest equipment can differ.

The safest clues are a stated seven-passenger capacity, a visible aisle between the second-row seats, or a factory build sheet that names the seating configuration. If the listing says only “three-row SUV,” ask for a photograph of the second row or the original window sticker.
