The best SUV for a dog is the one that safely fits the dog or secured carrier while leaving the space, access and airflow your usual trips require. The Subaru Outback, Honda CR-V, Rivian R1S and Jeep Cherokee are worth considering for different needs, but the available information does not establish a universal winner. Before buying, test your actual dog or crate in the vehicle with the second row in its normal position.
How to choose an SUV for your dog
Start with the dog’s size and mobility, then account for how the dog will travel: in a secured crate or carrier, or in a properly fitted restraint. Measure the space that remains when your passengers are aboard. Brochure maximum cargo volume, especially with seats folded, does not tell you whether your crate fits on a typical family trip.
- Usable cargo space: Check floor depth and width, the floor’s shape, the liftgate opening and any intrusion from wheel wells. Test with the second row in its ordinary position.
- Loading access: Consider the lift-over height and whether the dog must jump or be lifted. A low, level floor may be helpful for a large, older or mobility-limited dog.
- Restraint and anchors: Confirm that your crate or restraint fits and that the vehicle has suitable attachment points where the setup will sit.
- Airflow and climate: Check how air reaches the dog’s location and which rear climate controls are available. Verify any parked climate feature’s instructions and limits.
- Cleanup: Look for wipe-clean surfaces, a compatible cargo liner or pet mat. A liner helps protect the interior; it is not a restraint.
- Passenger and trip needs: Make sure the dog’s setup leaves enough room for the people who usually travel with you, and consider the terrain and powertrain that suit your outings.
Four SUVs to consider for dog owners
These models are examples drawn from separate editorial and manufacturer sources, not the results of a consistent head-to-head dog-transport test. Choose by fit and use case rather than treating them as a ranked list.

Make a real-world fit test before buying
- Prepare the setup. Bring the crate or carrier you intend to use, or measure your dog and allow for comfortable positioning. Include any mat or other equipment that will travel with the dog.
- Use the normal passenger layout. Keep the second row in the position you expect to use on trips. Check that the dog’s space does not depend on folding seats you normally need.
- Test the opening and floor. Try loading the crate through the liftgate. Check floor width and depth, the shape of the cargo area and the height of the loading edge.
- Locate the attachment points. Identify the anchors you would use for the crate or restraint and confirm the setup can be secured without improvised cords.
- Check airflow and access. Consider how air reaches the dog’s position and whether the dog can enter and exit comfortably, especially if jumping is difficult.
- Confirm the final configuration. Check that passengers, the secured dog setup and any luggage can all fit together as you actually travel.
Honda’s carrier demonstrations can help illustrate why placement matters, but they apply to the specified Japan-market CR-V configuration, not every CR-V or SUV.

Secure the dog’s setup; do not rely on a cargo liner
Choose a crate, carrier or restraint that is appropriate for your dog and can be secured in the vehicle. Center for Pet Safety and Subaru’s 2015 announcement recommends strength-rated cargo-area anchor straps for crates and carriers rather than elastic or rubber bungee cords. Its guidance is general; check current Center for Pet Safety materials and product-specific results before treating any particular product as having passed a test. A cargo mat or liner can help with dirt and moisture, but it does not secure a dog.
Honda also says a dog or carrier should be secured while the vehicle is moving. Check the vehicle manual for anchor locations and use the restraint or carrier according to its manufacturer’s instructions.
