The details depend on the market: Toyota’s February 2026 PHEV specifications and prices are for Japan, while U.S. grades, pricing, certified range and dealer availability are separate questions.
What’s new on the 2026 RAV4?
Toyota introduced the sixth-generation RAV4 at a world premiere in Japan on May 21, 2025, describing an intended rollout to more than 180 countries and regions. That announcement was a global premiere, not a simultaneous retail launch in every market. Toyota later announced market-specific lineups and schedules.
The new generation is offered with HEV and PHEV systems. Toyota’s premiere announcement also introduced three design directions—CORE, ADVENTURE and GR SPORT—and described a new-generation multimedia system, updates to Toyota Safety Sense and Toyota’s first use of its Arene software development platform, developed by Woven by Toyota. Feature names and availability vary by market and grade. Toyota’s world-premiere announcement includes the initial overview.
How do the RAV4 hybrid and plug-in hybrid differ?
HEV: hybrid
The HEV is the conventional hybrid option in Toyota’s new-generation lineup. Toyota’s Japan launch announcement lists Z HEV and Adventure HEV grades. The cited announcements do not establish that those exact grades or equipment are offered in every market.

PHEV: plug-in hybrid
The PHEV adds a larger, chargeable battery and can drive in battery-electric mode. Toyota’s 2025 world-premiere release described a newly developed plug-in system, a higher-capacity drive battery and silicon-carbide semiconductors in the front-axle and power-control components. It described approximately 150 km of BEV-mode range as a development target at that point; Toyota’s later Japan launch gives a measured figure with a specific qualification.
For Japan, Toyota’s February 19, 2026 release lists approximately 150 km of BEV-mode driving on a full charge, based on Toyota’s internal measurement as of February 2026, and maximum system output of 242 kW (329 PS). This is a Japan-market manufacturer figure, not an independently tested result or a U.S. EPA range rating. See Toyota’s Japan PHEV launch details.

What does GR SPORT add?
GR SPORT is Toyota’s handling-oriented, sporty RAV4 grade. In the Japan PHEV release, Toyota specifies aerodynamic front and rear parts, the drive battery used as a reinforcing member, GR Performance Dampers and GR Braces, plus specially tuned suspension and electric power steering. Toyota says the tuning is intended to improve stability, controllability and steering feel; the release is a manufacturer description, not an independent road test.
At the May 2025 premiere, Toyota described the GR SPORT prototype with a 20 mm wider tread, tuned suspension and electric power steering, lightweight aluminum wheels and spoilers. Those are premiere-stage details; they should not be assumed to apply identically to every retail-market version. Toyota’s U.S. announcement identified GR SPORT as a first for the U.S. RAV4 lineup, but did not make Japan’s grade specifications or availability universal. Toyota Motor North America’s May 2025 announcement covers the U.S. introduction.

Japan PHEV grades, prices and power-supply features
Toyota announced the Japan PHEV launch for March 9, 2026, with Z and GR SPORT grades. Its Japanese-market prices include consumption tax, exclude recycling fees, and differ in Okinawa.
| Japan PHEV grade | MSRP including consumption tax | Powertrain and range figures in Toyota’s February 2026 release |
|---|---|---|
| Z PHEV | ¥6,000,000; Okinawa has separate pricing, and recycling fees are excluded. | 242 kW (329 PS) maximum system output; approximately 150 km BEV-mode range on a full charge, based on Toyota’s internal measurement as of February 2026. |
| GR SPORT PHEV | ¥6,300,000; Okinawa has separate pricing, and recycling fees are excluded. | 242 kW (329 PS) maximum system output; approximately 150 km BEV-mode range on a full charge, based on Toyota’s internal measurement as of February 2026. |
These prices are for Japan and are not U.S. prices. Toyota’s December 2025 Japan launch announcement introduced the HEV lineup and scheduled the PHEV within FY2026; the later February announcement specified the PHEV’s March 9, 2026 launch. Toyota’s Japan HEV launch release provides that earlier market context.

For Japan, the PHEV includes a vehicle power connector that plugs into the charging inlet and supplies a 100V external socket rated up to 1,500 W total; a luggage-area outlet is also specified. Toyota estimates approximately 6.5 days of power at a 400 W load when starting with a full battery and full gasoline tank. Its approximately seven-day estimate for Power Supply Time Priority Mode comes from an in-house simulator. The connector cannot be used while driving.

Toyota Motor North America announced the U.S. 2026 RAV4 as HEV or PHEV and identified GR SPORT as new to the U.S. RAV4 lineup. Its May 20, 2025 announcement said U.S. dealer arrival was expected later in 2026 and that pricing would be shared closer to the on-sale date. That is the timing Toyota announced then; it does not confirm current dealer inventory or arrival dates.

Quick Recap
Which version should a buyer consider?
- Choose by charging routine: The HEV is the hybrid choice; consider the PHEV if plugging in is practical and electric-mode driving is useful to you. The Japan range figure does not establish range in another market.
- Choose by intended character: In Japan, Toyota positions Adventure as a distinct HEV grade and GR SPORT as the sporty, handling-focused option; the PHEV grades announced there are Z and GR SPORT.
- Check local specifications before comparing: Grade names, certified range, equipment, pricing and availability are market-specific. Compare prices only after accounting for currency and taxes, and compare electric range using the relevant market’s test cycle.
- Consider external power if relevant: Toyota’s detailed 1,500 W connector and outage-use estimates apply to the Japan PHEV announcement; verify local-market equipment before relying on those features.
