The RAV4 is a strong fuel-economy pick, the CR-V offers a lower base price with hybrid power available on higher trims, and the Forester stands out for standard all-wheel drive and cargo utility. The best fit depends on your commute, budget, traction needs, and whether you can charge a plug-in hybrid regularly.
“High mileage” can also mean a used SUV with a high odometer reading. The figures below help compare new 2026 models for frequent driving; they do not establish which used SUVs last longest or whether a particular used vehicle is sound.
Which new SUV is best for high yearly mileage?
For a frequent driver focused on gasoline use, the 2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid belongs near the top of the test-drive list. In an Edmunds comparison republished by AP News in 2025, Toyota estimates 44 mpg combined for the hybrid-only 2026 RAV4 lineup. The same comparison reports an EPA estimate of up to 40 mpg combined for the 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid.
The CR-V’s lower entry price needs context: the comparison reports a $32,370 starting price for the CR-V, but hybrid power begins on higher trims, with the least expensive hybrid CR-V starting at $37,080. The 2026 RAV4 base price is reported as $33,350. These are article-reported prices, not guaranteed out-the-door quotes; check current trim availability, destination charges, and dealer pricing before buying.

How to choose among the top picks
Toyota RAV4 Hybrid: prioritize fuel economy
The RAV4 Hybrid is a sensible starting point if reducing fuel use on frequent trips is your main goal. The 44 mpg combined figure is Toyota’s estimate for the 2026 model as reported by Edmunds/AP News, while Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide lists 37 mpg overall. They are different source-specific figures, so compare the exact trim and drivetrain you intend to buy rather than assuming every RAV4 achieves the higher figure.
Honda CR-V Hybrid: weigh price against trim
The CR-V may appeal if you value cabin space, easy access, and a pleasant hybrid powertrain. Its base CR-V price is not the price of the least expensive hybrid: the 2025 Edmunds/AP News comparison puts the latter at $37,080. Confirm the current trim lineup and local pricing before deciding whether its fuel economy offsets the higher hybrid entry point for your annual driving.

Their guide strengths include roomy interiors; the Tucson is also noted for handling and ride, while the Sportage is noted for a composed ride and cabin access. Is a hybrid SUV worth it if you drive a lot?
A conventional hybrid does not need to be plugged in, so it can suit drivers who want to reduce gasoline use without changing their routine. Whether it is worth the added purchase cost depends on the exact hybrid and non-hybrid trims, your annual miles, local fuel prices, and how much of your driving is in conditions where the hybrid’s efficiency advantage applies. Compare like-for-like equipment and estimate fuel spending from your own route; a maximum combined estimate is not a guaranteed result.
Frequent highway driving, high speeds, cold weather, heavy loads, tire choice, and driving style can all affect real-world fuel economy. Use EPA or manufacturer figures as comparison points, not as a promise of what your commute will deliver.

Should you buy a plug-in hybrid SUV instead?
A plug-in hybrid can reduce gasoline use substantially when you can charge regularly and your routine trips fit within its electric range. Edmunds’ 2026 RAV4 PHEV versus Tucson PHEV comparison, republished by AP News in September 2026, reports Toyota estimates of up to 54 electric miles on main RAV4 PHEV trims (48 miles on GR Sport), followed by an EPA estimate of up to 40 mpg combined after the battery is depleted. The comparison lists the Tucson PHEV at 32 electric miles and 35 mpg combined after depletion, both EPA estimates.
Those figures are model- and trim-specific. A PHEV is not automatically the cheaper choice for a driver who rarely charges: consider whether home or workplace charging is available, how long your usual trips are, and the vehicle’s fuel economy on longer journeys after the battery’s electric range is used.
How should annual mileage change your buying decision?
- Estimate your yearly driving. Use your recent odometer readings or weekly commute and regular-trip distances. More annual miles make fuel use more consequential, but do not by themselves determine which powertrain costs less overall.
- Compare the exact trims. Check the vehicle’s window sticker and current manufacturer information for drivetrain, equipment, and estimated fuel economy. A lineup-wide maximum may not apply to the trim you want.
- Calculate fuel use for your routine. Compare expected fuel consumption using your annual miles and a realistic estimate for your mix of city and highway driving. Treat published figures as estimates; weather, speed, load, route, tires, and driving style change results.
- Include purchase price and charging access. Compare the actual hybrid trim price with the vehicle you would otherwise buy. For a PHEV, include whether you can charge consistently and whether daily trips fit its electric range.
- Match utility to your routes. Check cargo and passenger space, AWD availability, winter-road needs, and any towing requirement on the specific trims. Do not assume AWD alone guarantees safe traction or shorter stopping distances.
- Test the details you will live with. Drive on representative roads, try the controls and gear selector, assess cabin noise and ride comfort, and evaluate visibility and braking.
What if “high mileage” means a used SUV with a high odometer?
A new-car fuel-economy comparison cannot rank used SUVs by durability at high odometer readings. The 2026 guide ratings and new-model MPG figures above do not establish the condition, maintenance costs, or remaining life of a specific used vehicle.
For a used SUV, assess the individual vehicle and its model year rather than relying on a new model’s ratings. The evidence available here does not establish a model-specific inspection checklist or a ranking of the most durable high-odometer SUVs. A sound decision needs model-year-specific reliability and recall information, maintenance records, vehicle-history information, and an independent pre-purchase inspection.
