There is no single consensus winner. KBB names the 2026 CR-V Hybrid its top-rated hybrid SUV, while Edmunds’ comparison published by AP News favors the redesigned 2026 RAV4 for value, technology, and efficiency. These are publisher-specific judgments, not a universal head-to-head result or a controlled test that settles every buyer’s priorities.

Fuel-economy numbers also depend on source and rating context. KBB’s list reports the RAV4 figure shown in the table; the Edmunds comparison gives Toyota’s estimate as “up to” a different combined figure and says the CR-V hybrid reaches an EPA estimate of up to 40 mpg combined, while being available at higher trims. Compare the exact trim and drivetrain you intend to buy rather than treating the highest published figure as representative of every version.

Choose a smaller crossover or watch the entry price
The Corolla Cross Hybrid is the smaller-budget candidate in this group, while the Tucson Hybrid is another compact option with a published starting price and combined-mpg range. Their figures are listed above; check the equipment, drivetrain, and trim behind the price and rating before comparing them with larger or differently configured SUVs.

Choose the Sequoia when towing is a priority
The Sequoia is the large, capability-focused choice in this comparison. When does a plug-in hybrid make more sense?

Consider a plug-in if you can charge at home or work and many of your regular trips fit within its electric range. If you rarely charge, evaluate it as a vehicle you will mostly use as a hybrid and compare its gasoline economy, price, and equipment with conventional hybrids. MPGe and mpg measure different things: MPGe reflects energy use, while mpg reflects gasoline consumption, so neither alone describes the entire ownership pattern.

- Set the size requirement. Decide whether a two-row compact or three-row SUV fits your passengers. For a three-row vehicle, confirm usable cargo space with every seat in use; the cited rankings do not provide a consistent cargo measurement across all models.
- Compare the exact configuration. Match front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, trim, and equipment. The EPA/DOE Fuel Economy Guide cautions that models can have multiple engines and trims with different fuel-economy values.
- Separate starting price from what you will pay. A published starting price is not the same as a dealer’s transaction price. Destination charges, incentives, inventory, and local offers can change the total; the cited sources do not establish current prices for a particular market.
- Compare like-for-like fuel economy. Put city, highway, and combined ratings side by side when available, and keep the source and configuration attached to each figure. Do not compare one vehicle’s best-rated trim with another’s less efficient configuration without noting the difference.
- Decide which capability matters. Consider whether you need all-wheel drive, towing, three-row seating, or plug-in electric range. These needs may matter more than a small difference in a published combined-mpg figure.
- Read ratings in context. Editorial scores reflect each publisher’s own methodology. A high score is useful as a shortlist signal, not proof that a model will suit your budget, driving pattern, or space needs best.
