The best naked sport bike of the 2000s depends on what you want from it: the broad capability of Yamaha’s FZ1, the V-twin character of Suzuki’s SV1000, or the sharper, more exposed feel of bikes such as the Triumph Speed Triple and Aprilia Tuono. This is a buyer-oriented shortlist, not a controlled head-to-head ranking: the available comparisons cover different model years and markets, and the published specifications use different measurement conventions.

How to choose among 2000s naked sport bikes

Start with the kind of ride you expect to do, not a single power or weight figure. These bikes span inline-four, V-twin, and three-cylinder engines; upright and sportier riding positions; and minimal bodywork through half-faired versions. A fairing can make a major difference on longer or faster rides, while engine layout and tuning shape the bike’s character. Period reviews offer useful impressions, but they are not universal measurements or proof that one model suits every rider.

  • Engine feel: Yamaha’s FZS1000/FZ1 and FZ6 use inline-fours; the SV1000 and Tuono use V-twins; the Speed Triple uses a three-cylinder engine.
  • Protection and posture: Distinguish fully naked bikes from the semi-cowled FZ1 Fazer and the half-faired FZ6 versions discussed in period coverage.
  • Ride character: Consider everyday flexibility, stability, agility, and sharpness in light of your own use. Reviewers’ descriptions are subjective.
  • Used-bike decision: Inspect the specific motorcycle and verify its year, market version, service history, and condition. The sources here do not establish current prices, reliability rankings, or ownership costs.

The shortlist

Yamaha FZS1000 Fazer and FZ1: the all-round, R1-derived choice

The FZS1000 Fazer arrived as a 2001 European model. Yamaha described its 998 cc inline-four as R1-based but retuned for a different character. The company listed 143 PS, 105.9 Nm, and 208 kg dry weight for that model year and market. These are manufacturer figures, and the dry-weight number should not be read as ready-to-ride weight. Yamaha’s 2001 FZS1000 announcement and specifications.

For 2006, Yamaha introduced a redesigned FZ1 naked bike alongside the semi-cowled FZ1 Fazer. Yamaha described the engine as directly descended from the YZF-R1 and specified a new aluminum frame. Its stated 15 kg weight reduction was relative to the preceding FZS1000 Fazer, not to every rival. Yamaha framed the development goal as building a “real emotional roadster”; that is the company’s design positioning, not an independent performance finding. Yamaha’s 2006 FZ1 and FZ1 Fazer launch announcement.

Best fit: A rider seeking a powerful inline-four roadster and a choice between naked and semi-cowled bodywork. Check the exact year and version; FZS1000 Fazer, FZ1, and FZ1 Fazer refer to related but distinct models and configurations.

Suzuki SV1000: the V-twin alternative

Suzuki’s archive describes the 2003 naked SV1000 as a relative of the SV1000S without its fairings. The 995 cc liquid-cooled V-twin is listed at 94 PS and 90 Nm, with a dry weight of 186 kg. Suzuki highlights the V-twin sound and upright pipe handlebars. Those specifications belong to the archive’s 2003 model entry; dry weight is not directly interchangeable with a ready-to-ride figure. Suzuki Digital Library: 2003 SV1000.

A period road test found the naked SV1000 more upright and comfortable than the faired S, and described its power as smooth and accessible. The reviewer also noted its weight and planted feel; those are ride impressions, not manufacturer specifications or a guarantee of how every example will feel. Visordown’s SV1000 used review.

Yamaha FZ6: the middleweight option

The 2004 US guide covers an FZ6 with a retuned, R6-derived 599 cc inline-four, aluminum frame, and half-fairing. It is a useful middleweight alternative to the liter-class bikes above, but FZ6 bodywork and naming varied by market. Confirm that the particular bike you are considering is the naked or faired configuration you want. Motorcyclist’s 2004 model guide.

  • Faithful 1:18 scale model of the aggressive V4 S Naked.
  • Attention to detail and iconic red livery, in a concentrate of pure emotion for true enthusiasts.
  • Factory-original equipment, not aftermarket

Best fit: A buyer who wants a smaller-displacement option rather than the liter-class FZS1000, FZ1, or SV1000. The cited guide describes a half-faired version, so do not assume every FZ6 is fully naked.

Kawasaki Z1000, Triumph Speed Triple, and Aprilia Tuono: distinct personalities

The Z1000, Speed Triple, and FZ1 appeared together in a 2008 comparison that discussed differences in wind protection and comfort. It described the FZ1 as more sportbike-like in appearance and noted its half-fairing, while the starkly naked Speed Triple left the rider more exposed. These are the comparison’s observations, not a universal comfort ranking. Rider Magazine’s 2008 comparison.

A later used-bike comparison rode a 2004 Z1000, a 2004 955i Speed Triple, and a 2007 Tuono. Its reviewer portrayed the Tuono as especially sharp and aggressive, with a firm setup and instant character. A separate Tuono/Speed Triple review characterized the Speed Triple as more relaxed and broad-ranging than the sharper Tuono. Treat these as reviewer impressions of those bikes, not measured traits guaranteed across model years or individual examples. Visordown’s Z1000, Speed Triple, and Tuono comparison; Visordown’s Tuono and Speed Triple road test.

Best fit: Consider these if their specific character appeals more than the FZ1’s all-round positioning or the SV1000’s V-twin format. The cited comparisons do not establish one overall winner among them.

What the published specifications can—and cannot—tell you

Model and reference Engine and output Weight How to interpret it
2001 European Yamaha FZS1000 Fazer 998 cc inline-four; 143 PS and 105.9 Nm, manufacturer figures 208 kg dry, manufacturer figure Yamaha described the engine as R1-based and retuned. Source.
2006 Yamaha FZ1 / FZ1 Fazer launch R1-derived engine; the cited launch material does not state comparable output figures here Yamaha claimed 15 kg less than the preceding FZS1000 Fazer The reduction is relative to that predecessor, not a cross-rival weight comparison. Source.
2003 Suzuki SV1000 995 cc V-twin; 94 PS and 90 Nm, manufacturer figures 186 kg dry, manufacturer figure Suzuki’s entry describes the naked model, without the SV1000S fairings. Source.
2004 Yamaha FZ6 covered by the US guide Retuned R6-derived 599 cc inline-four Not stated in the cited guide The version covered has a half-fairing; FZ6 configurations varied by market. Source.

These figures come from manufacturer specifications or claims and a period model guide; they are not a normalized test. In particular, dry weights should not be compared as though they were ready-to-ride weights, and the available material does not supply equivalent figures for every shortlisted bike.

A practical used-bike decision

  1. Identify the exact bike. Confirm model year, market, and configuration, including whether it is a naked, half-faired, or semi-cowled version.
  2. Match it to your riding. Decide how much wind protection and upright posture you want, and whether an inline-four, V-twin, or three-cylinder engine better suits your preferences.
  3. Assess the individual example. Review condition and service records and arrange an inspection appropriate to a used motorcycle. A model’s reputation or a period road test cannot establish the state of a particular bike.
  4. Compare like with like. Check specifications for the same market and year, and note whether each quoted weight is dry or measured another way. Do not infer current value, reliability, parts availability, or running cost from the historical specifications above.
